No, Half Life 2 is postapocalyptic.

If you like. I'm not really clear on when something becomes post-apocalyptic as opposed to just plain apocalyptic, but it isn't important.

If we can expect HL3 to also be a postapocalyptic world, I don't want ME4 to be because it won't reach the same impact. One of the best selling points of Mass Effect was its size... a postapocalyptic world that's galaxy wide? That's going to achieve nothing.

I'm not really sure what you're getting at here.

I wouldn't mind post apocalyptic, but only as a Batarian. With a pet Varren. And a 69 camaro.

I meant that trying to achieve too many genres at the same time has historically led to more failures than successes.

OK, but I don't see why a sequel would necessarily use post-apocalyptic genre tropes even if it is technically in a post-apocalyptic setting.

Let's say the game is set 60 years after Destroy. There used to be mass relays. Now there aren't, but they've still got starships better than anything in Star Trek. Can't get to Thessia anymore, probably, but there are plenty of other worlds in reach. Cities were in ruins years ago. Now they're not. MEU without relays is just a regular SF setting.

Unless the writers actually wanted to do a post-apocalyptic game set immediately after ME3, of course, in which case they could just leave everything in ruins.

Yeah Sion. That's why I hope they sell the next game properly enough to me.

If they somehow go:

"Oh you heard about the First Contact War, but did you know THIS happened in it? And THIS? Wider implications!"

No thank you.

Certainly this should be a given, but that's speaking from the perspective of the 'old-timers', by which I mean people whom BioWare attracted through games like Baldurs Gate, Neverwinter Knights, KotOR, Jade Empire and Mass Effect.

These were games aimed at a niche market, created by a smaller group people who shared the passions of their audience towards a particular kind of experience.

Things may have irrevocably changed since then. Remember, EA does not do niche markets, they aim to reach a broader audience as evidenced in Mass Effect 3.

They may determine that there is greater profit potential in going the other way, perhaps even losing the core fanbase in favor of a semi-mainstream audience. Certainly this would water down the potential for any future critical controversy.

In the Southwestern US? With a Barrett M82 and an AK-47? and plenty of bullets, and throwing knives. That would be cool.

Half Life doesn't really have many of the earmarks of post-apocalyptic fiction.

Let's not overstate this. Bio always wanted to be a big developer rather than a niche outfit, and they've never been all that loyal to whatever the self-proclaimed true RPG fans think are the defining features of the RPG genre. Every couple of years Bio commits some sort of atrocity against the RPG fans, starting when BG2 abolished overland map exploration.

Thaat's not how it works. When social norms take a turn for the worse, it's the duty of those with good judgement to make a stand.

Very true. Best to just get over it. I'm not bemoaning what Bioware wants to do with themselves exactly, but it sucks. Mostly because there aren't many western RPGs in that vein anymore.

ME3 gets flak for catering to the shooter crowd, but to me, it's still an RPG. Just an RPG that's resembling JRPGs more and more (mostly in the relationships and more defined protagonist). Not quite there yet though.

Either high ems destroy is canon and Shep lives or let ME die and do something else. We don't want this to turn into the Star Wars EU.
