This makes me very curious. Read this by all means. Good ol' Evil Chris dropped some teasers that 1) it's pretty much confirmed by what he said that we're indeed gonna see something at the VGAs and 2) the game might take place in a "very different universe" and 3) as the title suggests we might be in for a change so big that the main title isn't Mass Effect.

I'm curious as to whether that's just a bad interpretation by the article's writer or if that's literally what Chris was saying.

Second of all, I wonder what these hints imply. Will the title be changed to reflect that this is not about Shepard? Will this ACTUALLY take place in an alternative/parallel universe, or does the "subject to be changed" simply reflect on that the game structure, flow and gameplay will be fundamentally different?

Discuss and guess away! :wizard:

the new Mass Effect if not branded Mass Effect ... might as well be titled "Little Impact" since many would easily over look it

That's perfectly fine. Once you've made a trilogy you move on: otherwise you're beating a dead horse.

Doubt they'll remove "Mass Effect" from the title.

Most I could see is removing either "mass" or "effect", not both, and using the same typeface to get the branding's point across.

It would be really questionable if they did of course, but if they're doing it I think they have a definitive reason for doing so... like, say, The Mass Relays are not in the game :-P

I don't really care what it's called but imo this directly contradicts what we have already been told. Something along the lines "the setting will be easily recognised as mass effect".

Just read the article. It doesn't really claim that. It says the title is not ME4 or Mass Effect 4 and is not about Shepard. Which we already knew. Nothing new here.

I don't find it plausible since EA would like to marketing it like Mass Effect to help on sales but it could be something like "X: an adventure on the Mass Effect universe".

I don't remember that quote. All I remember is them saying "It's gonna feel like a Mass Effect game at heart"
They can easily make a parallel universe and make it feel just like Mass Effect.

I don't remember the exact quote. But "feel" and "recognised" are not that different in context. Pretty sure there wasn't an "at heart" thrown on the end. But the point is that this article doesn't really tell us anything we haven't been told. It doesn't argue that the setting is going to change so much that using "Mass Effect" as part of the name is inappropriate.

Or maybe they'll add a small "Mass Effect" (Or Mass Effect Universe, something like that) above the main title, like Elder Scrolls.

I could swear I saw one of the developers state here on the forums it would not be called ME4 as that would imply a sequel to the Shepard trilogy.

On July 29, Chris Priestly (TheEvilChris) tweeted:
"Today marks the end of my 12+ years at BioWare. Sad to go, but huge thanks to all me friends I've met and through work. Farewell."
Hmmmm...

Second of all, I wonder what these hints imply. Will the title be changed to reflect that this is not about Shepard?

The title "Mass Effect" refers to the mass effect fields (duh) which make magic possible, and not a reference to Shepard. As long as the same fictional rules of physics still apply it would make a certain amount of have "Mass Effect" in the title of whatever game they are working on.

I'm guessing that it will be a rebranding exercise similar to Call of Duty -> Call of Duty: Modern Warfare -> Modern Warfare 2 (which didn't work but that never stopped anyone in the games industry)

First of all, it's not going to happen in the first place.

Second of all, the game is not called Mass Effect because of the mass effect. It's called Mass Effect because of the mass effect Shepard's actions have on the galaxy.

I wonder if it's going to end up being like the Final Fantasy series, where the universes and timelines are technically different, but many of the same elements (such as Moogles and Chocobos) remain.

Wut. It's a speculation article that quotes Chris' old statement on this forum when Montreal's Mass Effect was first confirmed, wherein Chris weaselled around announcing where in the timeline the next game is set, and reaffirmed the intention to keep all Shepard stuff out of it.

Everything else wasn't said by Chris, but is the article's author speculating.

To soon to tell in my opinion, but I suspect that the new game will most likely be called Mass Effect. I simply find it hard to believe that Bioware would have gone to the trouble to announce this game as a Mass Effect title and at the relative last minute say that it is a completely different game. I suspect the article was titled that way solely for click-bait value.

I am pretty sure it has been said countless times before, it will still be Mass Effect, but it will not take into account the events of ME1-3, but it is not a reboot or a sequel either, the way it was decried made me think of how they do the Zelda games; Each Zelda is based in the same world but is a totally different story with no relation to its predecessors.
