Mass Effect 4 might not be called Mass Effect at all.

I always favoried the "Reboot" of the series, heck why not make it so the Reapers could have been defeited conviontally. I mean they could have used the shutting down of the relays as a way to have "overwhelming force" in systems and to prevent any sort of cordiation.

Wouldn't shutting down the relays work in favor of the side with faster FTL drives and no need for fuel?

Why do people have so much faith in a reboot?

I don't see it as a matter of faith. I see it as the easiest way to go. I see it as a clean slate, a fresh start, a way to wipe out the failure of the endings of ME3.
Many reboots have been sucessful at saving the franchise from an incorrigible mess, like Batman Begins and Tomb Raider Legend. But, of course, reboots do not guarantee quality.

A Name is just a name. Sales/Marketing aside, the game content is the priority from my perspective. Looking back, I can think of many poorly-named games that were greatly worthwhile: UmJammer Lammy, Conker's Bad Fur Day, Incredible Crisis, etc. As many said earlier, we were informed beforehand that it wouldn't necessarily be a direct sequel. They seem intent on drastically changing the original Mass Effect Universe for The Next Generation.

I think it's more that people like the general sketch of the setting but don't like the direction, and a reboot chucks out the direction but keeps the setting. Kind of how someone could like parts of the Star Trek universe but hate its tone, and so like the rebooting-in-everything-but-name that the new ST movies essentially turned out to be.

I hope it isn't "Mass Shift" haha. wow! :)

That would be a hell of an I Told You So Moment haha

Heh.

My bet is still more on 'Mass Effect: ____' like everything else so far (side mobile games, comics, films, books).

But I don't write off Mass Shift (anymore - I largely did at first) :). We've had leaks for info on much less.

Well, I'll just say I see it as possible to see a 'partial reboot'. Now the nature of it... that's something I've put far too much thought on to be considered sane.

This isn't surprising. Four would imply a continuation of Shepard's story and I think Bioware learned the lesson from Dragon Age 2.

I'm a little surprised at the reaction this thread is getting—namely, the fact not many people are calling out that the article proves nothing to suggest that the next Mass Effect will not be under the Mass Effect name or add any new information to what we have already known for months. It cites a quote from "community manager" Chris Priestly (who, we all know, has been gone from BioWare for many months [bless his soul]) from the "Mass Effect 4" thread when the game was first announced. He said:

"We have already said that the Commander Shepard trilogy is over and that the next game will not feature him/her. That is the only detail you have on the game. I see people saying ‘well, they’ll have to pick a canon ending’. No, because the game does not have to come after. Or before. Or off to the side. Or with characters you know. Or yaddayaddayadda."

You'll notice this was his way of keeping the fanbase from over-speculating before the setting had even been decided. He then said that calling the game Mass Effect 4 would be a disservice due to the non-Shepard story it would tell, not Mass Effect in general. The author then takes this and makes wild, misinterpreted speculation that the game could be in a different universe and that a different title is not too far out there.

All in all: nothing to fear. Nothing has changed. We've known all of this information for months.

With each statement made about the next Mass Effect game by past or present Bioware employees, it sounds less and less interesting.

Exactly! That was one of the worst "articles" I have ever read. Speculation based on a months old quote. SMH

IMO, I'd prefer it not to be named Mass Effect.

ME belongs to Shepards story.

Moving forward should have a new name along with a new protagonist. That protagonist needs to stand on his/her own two feet without Shepard's story to prop it up.
