ThaneMOD v1.1 has been released and work on v2.0 is underway! Authorized downloads can be found on ModDB and Nexus. We don't upload anywhere else, so if you find copies on other sites, I'd highly recommend viewing those with extreme caution. We can't vouch for their contents.

v1.1 is a minor release. Thane will now grant the Paramour achievement (a ME3 modding first, thanks to HelixSpiral). Also included is a new render for the Hanar and Drell Forces, and some small tweaks to the two codex renders included in v1.0.

I'm also happy to say that the Friend Shep spoiler section on the website is now complete. It contains detailed information, screenshots, and videos of every change the mod makes for friendShep. For access to videos only, you can also jump onto our YouTube channel. We're just getting started on the LI spoiler section, which will detail many more changes, thus will take a bit more time to pull together. You can also find a Render Gallery that shows all the custom artwork created for the mod. This includes Epilogue "slides" and war asset/codex images.

Remember to keep an eye on our tumblr for news. It's our central location for announcements. And, of course, please feel free to join our forum for access to more in depth info about the mod :)

Is this release more compatible with me3explorer texture mods (installer) or is that going to be a feature of v2.0? :)

Is this release more compatible with me3explorer texture mods (installer) or is that going to be a feature of v2.0? :)

This release doesn't include any DLC files, so that is helpful. But, we still don't have a release to compensate for the new method of DLC unpacking. Now that this seems to be well ironed out, what we'll probably have to do is simply release an alternate installer version for the v1.0 DLC files. v2.0 likely won't be done until August at the earliest, and I don't want folks to have to wait that long for DLC file compatibility. We'll get on it soon, but it's a bit of a project. Installers are a chore and a half and it will involve making more than one, so we'll get it out as soon as we can.

As far as installers overwriting pcc files that might have texture mods applied, that's par for the course for content mods. It's pretty unavoidable (which is why installing ThaneMOD after MEHEM which requires a vanilla install is such agood idea, lol). Installation via an installer is the most foolproof way of minimizing user error during installation. In theory, .mod files could do the same thing, but those not only require ME3Explorer, but are REV dependent. The only reason why we used one for our DLC content was that I couldn't figure out the scripting for VPatch, and WV was nice enough to implement .mod files for DLC content so we could go that route. But, like MEHEM, it was always the goal of ThaneMOD to not require ME3Exp, or at least minimize the amount that it is needed, attempting to create the simplest and most streamlined install process possible that appeals to the most users.

Good question, btw :)

Hi Chroptus!

We're familiar with Thane's journal letter from ME2 LOTSB (which is the same one he sends in vanilla ME3). We've repurposed a portion of that content in the first ThaneMOD LI email, since the letter no longer arrives when a player uses ThaneMOD.

As for using alternate voice actors (as in your linked Soundcloud clip), I appreciate the link but that's not something we're willing to do. You can always tell the difference between the real VA and an impersonator. That breaks immersion in a huge way for many people. It's not enough for it to sound a bit like Thane, it needs to be Keythe Farley voicing Thane. Two of our primary goals are to maintain as high of a standard of quality as we can and keep from immersion breaks as much as possible. The latter is especially important since all of Thane's actions in ME3 did break immersion for so many folks. So, at the very least, all changes ThaneMOD makes to Thane's dialogue need to be in his voice to ensure immersion. That means vanilla dialogue via the original VAs, as recorded by BW. A little fancy editing and relocating some phrases from ME2, and you can splice new sentences together and have Thane say different things. Which is exactly what we've done for ThaneMOD, for both FemShep and Thane.

I appreciate the suggestions, though, and if you want to know what we're working on for v2.0, I encourage you to register on our forum :)

I read all instructions, requirements and FAQs and as far as I can tell I installed everything correctly, but Thane is not in Huerta Hospital anymore. One of the FAQs said it's correct because of teh EWAC Module (I picked version 1.0D) but I'm not sure if it's working.

During Hanar Diplomat I think I saved Kahje because Kasumi was there so I didn't need any paragon/renegade interrupt and both War Assets where earned.

Can you or anyone else clarify if I'm doing it right?

Additional details: FemShep, not romanced Thane and mod was installed along with MEHEM, CEM (with Patch) and Extended Anderson Conversation, but not strictly from beginning, I already completed Sur'Kesh when installed (really hope this is not a problem).

Hi Bruno--

Thane is no longer in Huerta after Sur'Kesh for EWAC users when using ThaneMOD. This is to accomodate the new lore that is established in the emails from Thane to Shepard.

--You state you are using ThaneMOD with MEHEM and that FemShep is Thane's friend, so version using 1.0D is correct. MEHEM should be installed first, because ThaneMOD needs to overwrite some of MEHEM's DLC files to ensure the ending works properly.

--There are new CEM patches out specifically for ThaneMOD. They are called "ThaneMOD-MEHEM to CEM." They are beta patches as they have not been thoroughly tested. You need to make sure you are using one of those rather than the standard, MEHEM to CEM patch.

--The Extended Anderson Conversation mod is INCLUDED in ThaneMOD v1.0D. This should not be installed separately or it could result in errors in your PT.

Finally, as the Install Guide states, ThaneMOD really should be started with a new playthrough. Or at the absolute latest for friendShep, installed BEFORE Priority: Palaven (Menae). Otherwise, you are missing out on the new Huerta note, changes to the Huerta conversation and music, and you will likely have issues with proper triggering of the emails and new war assets which trigger immediately after Sur'Kesh.

I would highly recommend that you revert your game to a save before starting Priority: Palaven. This is the only way to ensure ThaneMOD works properly for the duration of the game, including coup events and the ending. If you choose not to revert, then I can't guarantee it will work and it likely won't. Various plot flags throughout the game need to be set for ThaneMOD to work correctly. Some of those flags include new content that ThaneMOD adds. This is why we recommend installing from the beginning or immediately after Priority: Mars.

Hope that clears things up :)

So, basically I screwd up? I installed the mod exactly before the second time we can step up in Huerta, usually to check on him. I saved before docking and saved again inside the hospital to be sure and Thane was there. I installed the mod and when loading the Hospital save, Thane was gone. I assumed it was correct

I loaded the previous save and found read the Encrypted Message he sent. I docked again, and he was not there yet.

Now I finished Citadel II and lots Major Kirrahe ( :( ) but again, I assumed it was correct as everything was fine according to "How ThaneMOD work" article.

Is there anything I can do? Palaven is way too far from where I'm now...

Thane *should be gone* after Sur'Kesh. And, if Kirrahe died at the coup that is a good sign.

But, did you go up to the hospital to be sure his death scene doesn't trigger? If it does, then you definitely don't want to play through the end, since the ending will also be messed up.

And, did you get an email from Thane after Sur'Kesh that triggered a war asset? The email is called "Unexpected News."

Have you checked your Known Associates codex? Is his new codex entry in there? It will trigger after you speak to him in Huerta, but I have no idea if it will trigger in a PT where you've already spoken to him.

----------------------------------------------

You might be ok, you might not. FriendShep is a bit easier than LI Shep in that regard. BUT, if any issues do arise it will be due not having the mod enabled early enough in the game. And the only way to fix it will be to revert saves. It will not be fixable otherwise.

This is why we are very, very clear on the website and in the Install Guide that you should start a new PT or enable the mod immediately after Mars.

If folks choose to enable it after that and stuff doesn't work, then that's up to them. It's just that we can't help in that situation.

If I were you, I'd definitely check the hospital and make sure he's not there. If he isn't and you want to cautiously proceed, that is up to you. I've already given you my foolproof recommendation, lol :]

I think I start over again... Sigh... Just to let you know, I didn't receive this second mail of "Unexpected News". And I couldn't find him at all in Huerta and I checked the room where he should be with his son and it's empty.

Well, that's definitely good that he wasn't in the Inpatient Wing.

Also, one of the requirements to receive any of his emails is that you must speak to him in Huerta. If you don't do that, then no emails or new war assets. I'm guessing you didn't speak to him before installing the mod--and you couldn't speak to him after, due to installing post-Sur'Kesh--so that's why the emails and war assets couldn't work.

I finished the game in this meanwhile with ThaneMOD installed successfully.

First of all, I want to say that having "Extended Anderson Conversation" separately installed wasn't a problem. Whatever it changes in game files, didn't cause any issue with ThaneMOD's "built-in" EAC. That was a relief. :P

All the trouble I had was because I missed one of Thane's mails because I installed it after Sur'kesh while it must be installed at least before Palaven (I figured out the hard way).

Too bad my FemShep and Thane were only friends. The friendship module(s) is not very... enthusiastic. But it's great anyway.

I just wish BW stop to kill my buddies >:(

@Bruno --

Installing after Sur'Kesh meant that you missed about two-thirds of the friendShep content. This includes: the revised Huerta note from Thane, revised Huerta Dialogue, new music for the Huerta conversation, triggering of Thane's codex entry, Thane's first email and Thane's new individual war asset.

Instead, all you experienced was his absence from the coup, his second email with the hanar/drell war asset upgrade, and his epilogue slide at the end.

This is why I encouraged you to start over. From your post it's not 100% clear if you restarted your playthrough from the beginning or not, but if not, referring to the friendShep module as not very "enthusiastic" when you missed a majority of the content isn't really a fair evaluation of the mod.

Regardless, I'm glad to hear you enjoyed having Thane alive at the end of the game. And, for those interested in a full account of all friendShep changes ThaneMOD makes you can see eveything in the FriendShep Spoilers section of our website :]

I restarted from beginning. Better than take risk to finish everything and see nothing.

But I beg your pardon if I passed any kind of wrong criticism with "enthusiastic". When I wrote that I really meant "compared with Thane LI version". Like you stated in website the LI version has a lot more features. As a friend, after Sur'Kesh there is no more Thane so talk (which is understandable).

ANyway... It's a very nice mod and at least one of Shepard's buddies ended alive. I wish there were more "ThaneMODs" for Mordin, Legion...

But they don't really need it do they? Moridin and Legion actually had great parts to play in the plot(because their game sections weren't cut) and their deaths were meaningful and impactful.

Question for giftfish: Are there plans for someday having one install for every version of the mod and having the game automatically recognize which content to use based upon plot flags, etc..?

Ah, glad to see you went back to the beginning then. You are certainly correct that there is more LI content, which makes sense, especially in Thane's case since he is absent for so much of the game. With Shep's war obligations and Thane's new lore in the emails, it doesn't make much sense that they would be corresponding more frequently than the two emails he does send. To keep 100% to vanilla conventions, he should really only send a single email, like so many of the other ME2 squadmates. But, we felt two was really necessary to carry on his story in a more immersive and realistic manner. To really provide closure.

It would be nice to add a bit more Huerta Dialogue back to friendShep. We cut almost everything since a majority of it focuses on his poor health. It's also a ton of work to make changes to the friend version since all edits have to be made twice, once for FemShep and again for BroShep. The LI dialogue of course only had to be done for FemShep. But, we'll try :]

Question for giftfish: Are there plans for someday having one install for every version of the mod and having the game automatically recognize which content to use based upon plot flags, etc..?

Initially, the plan was for a single version to install, as ThaneMOD does already use plot flags to control all the emails, paramour aquisition, the war assets, codex entries, Thane's availability in Huerta (in person and on the map), his removal from the coup, ending slides and new flashback, etc. In fact, the functionality of all of ThaneMOD is controlled by 50 new conditionals and about a half dozen edited vanilla conditionals, as well as new bool checks built into many PCCs.

The issue with the separate installs is two-fold. One is the installer scripting. The original plan was to have a single installer where people could pick all the components they wanted and install them. Trying to make this happen proved more difficult than we could handle. We just didn't have the scripting skills and using NSIS as a novice scripter was...difficult to say the least. So, breaking up the installer into pre-defined "packages" solved this problem. The manual install (v1.0F) is there for folks who want a module combination that we don't provide--our attempt to try to stay as faithful to our original intent as we could.

The other issue is the Huerta Dialogue. Like textures, we still cannot add new audio to the game. All inserted dialogue must replace vanilla dialogue, and Shepard has very, very few lines in the vanilla Huerta convo. To do justice for the LI dialogue revamp and give both Shep and Thane more lines, I had to commandeer audio files used for friendShep. And, even with that I still ran out of 4 lines for FemShep. So, until we can decipher the wwisebanks and figure out how to get the game to recognize new audio files--or figure out a workaround--there will always need to be separate "friend" and "LI" versions of ThaneMOD. Plot checks can't work in this situation. It's not ideal, but it's the best we can do for right now...and possibly ever. Editing audio for ME3 is somewhat of a black box, though a bit less so than animations.

Believe me or not, I almost cried when I first played ME3. I don't know, when Legion asks Tali "Does this unit have a soul?" it was like a fierceful arrow was hitting me. And Mordin, with that crazy and a little stupid way of being, always very correct, polite, logical, almost indifferent to the war, and singing my almost next shower time song...

I understand their deaths of course, but man...

Erm... You mean two more emails, don't you? Because I'm pretty sure I received three emails from Thane. The usual, asking to visit him, the one talking about his treatment and a third one, near the end, which if I'm not wrong contains a transcription of the pray we watch in vanilla.

I also have a soft spot for both Legion and Mordin. I love them both and wish I could have finished the game with them both alive.

As far as the messages, we're talking about the same thing, Bruno. We refer to the Huerta message as a "note." It's an edit of the vanilla note and isn't an "addition" of content, so to speak. It's also very short and doesn't really serve to establish new lore. The two emails Thane sends to Shepard are different, created wholly by ThaneMOD, are much more lengthy, and serve to create new lore for his story.

Wow, does this thread need a serious bump, lol.

My BSN attendance started dwindling rapidly during the days of Romance DLC/Cosmic Love, as the atmosphere of the old site grew more and more toxic. But, I thought I'd poke my head in just to let folks know development on ThaneMOD (and a new mod called, "BackOff") is still underway. I post regular updates on the ThaneMOD tumblr, the Client Review section of the ThaneMOD Forums, and ME3Explorer.

Obvious spoiler warning.

BackOff is an extension of ThaneMOD that will come bundled with TMv3.0 but will also be useable on its own. It's all the TMv2.0 "antiflirt" content moved into its own mod--and greatly expanded-- to be used by all players. BO v1.0 focuses on ME2 LIs and FemShep LIs. I recommend reading up on the tumblr for full details, but here's a snapshot of what you can expect for each LI:

  • General Changes -- BackOff fixes a lot of bugs. Typos and dropped words in subtitles, bad lighting, DOF camera fixes, floating characters, jerky/fubared animations, dialogue wheel text, and more. BO also modifies lots and lots of dialogue wheel options creating a situation more reminiscent of ME1 and ME2. Three choices won't always be present, and often there's a new "friendly" choice in the upper left. This should clue players into the fact that flirting with that NPC will have ramifications.
  • Restored Cut Dialogue -- There's a good bit of new dialogue in BO. Whenever I came across cut dialogue in the game files that made sense to restore, I restored it.
  • Cabin Photo for All -- The cabin photo will now appear (with a general "Photo" caption) for all players once any romance is locked in. This includes Thane and Jacob (some big strings on that last one, read below). A photo texture will be provided for each LI and is up to the player to install with TPFTools or use it with Texmod.
  • Jacob Overhaul -- This isn't as in depth as the overhaul ThaneMOD does for Thane, but it's pretty significant. Those with an imported ME2 Jacobmance can expect a substantially modified convo with him on Gellix, where he is no longer seeing Brynn. Instead, he simply feels obligated to protect the scientists and has grown into more of a leader since Shepard has been away. He also won't leave them -- at least not yet -- b/c that's not something I can change, lol. There's no confrontation with Brynn, and Jacob sends a new LI-specific email after Gellix that provides a better transition for his relationship with Shepard. His Huerta convo is also modified, and no baby, of course. Citadel DLC will have some modifications, as well. While it's not a true romance, BO presents a way for the player to headcanon that Shepard might just end up with Jacob in the end.
  • Kelly Overhaul -- Like Ken and Gabby, Kelly will now be in the game for all ME2 new ports. New dialogue paths have been created for those with a less friendly relationship with Kelly. She is now also a true LI, locking out all other LIs once her romance is active. Kelly will also look more like her ME2 self.
  • Liara Overhaul -- I just finished spending two months working on Liara; she was a huge job. Pretty much every significant conversation with her in the game has had some type of modification. She no longer has "relationship amnesia" for those with an imported romance. I've also tried to put her level of "friendliness" with the player more in the player's control. Most players will no longer have two "dates" with Liara. They'll have either the time capsule or Presidium convo, not both. Those trying to romance her for the first time can have both as long as they do the TC first. Those rekindling will not have the TC convo at all. Liara's "gift" in London now requires a much higher friendship level (or romance) to trigger. Dialogue with Aethyta was already fixed in TMv2.0; this has been relocated to BO.
  • Steve -- Not too many changes for Steve, since folks were generally satisfied with his romance. The DW for the Purgatory convo has been modified and like every other LI, BroShep will no longer be able to flirt with Steve if he's already locked in a relationship.
  • Sam -- Lots of similar changes as in TMv2.0, but now all of her CIC convos have also been overhauled. Sam will no longer flirt once Shepard has locked in another LI.
  • James -- James' flirting has been restored, b/c it's now in the player's control via a new dialogue option during his very first convo. If the player chooses to flirt, then James will flirt for the rest of the game. If the player does not, then James will keep things platonic. All Cargo and Citadel convos for James have been edited.
  • Joker -- A couple tweaks were already present in TMv2.0. These have been relocated to BO.
  • Allers -- No changes. If you dislike her, I recommend AVPen's Allers mod to remove her from the game without penalty.
  • Samara-- No planned changes since there really isn't anything to work with. But, I'm going to take one more look before release.
  • Garrus -- No changes outside of the new plot changes that will affect every LI (like Kelly's a real romance). Garrus probably has the best romance in the game. No reason to mess with a good thing. If there is a BO v2.0, I will look through Garrus's dialogue to see if there's anything worth restoring, though.
  • Ashley/Tali/Miranda/Jack -- Like Garrus, no changes outside of plot changes that will affect every LI. All will be addressed in BO v2.0, assuming there is one. If so, it won't be until after TMv3.0 is released, so...next year for certain.

And, then there is Kaidan. I'll be starting on him in the next week or so. He's the final LI for BackOff v1.0.

ThaneMOD v3.0 is going to have some really, really fun content. I've spent most of last fall and this spring working on BackOff, so I'm pretty excited to get back to ThaneMOD. Here's some details on what to expect:

  • New Install Method -- v3.0 will be the easiest install yet. I'm trying really hard to make it an "install and forget" mod, regardless of romance status, or even if Thane isn't in your playthrough. The only reason you should have to change your install is if you change your ending type (EC, JAM, MEHEM, etc). This will make things very easy for texture modders, and just less of a hassle in general.
  • Galaxy Map Changes -- There will be a couple new places to travel to on the map, complete with new war assets :)
  • Email -- A new email from Kolyat, romance-specific.
  • Easter Eggs -- Two or three really fun Easter Eggs. I'm pretty excited about these; some of you will be thrilled.
  • Codex -- Drell culture codex has finally been restored.
  • Romance Scene for Thane -- Thanks to JohnP, this is currently working in game, but still needs a lot of work. Using an amalgam of Kaidan and Garrus's scenes, Thane and Siha will be able to truly unite before the ending. Once development on BO is finished, I'll be spending most of my dev time on this. It's possible there will also be a quest involved to pick Thane up from Noveria; we'll see. This scene is also one reason I chose to create BO -- b/c I needed to learn a lot more about dialogue editing, And, oh, what I've learned, lol.
  • Revised Huerta Dialogue -- Creating a romance scene will require modifying Huerta since there is some line overlap in places. It also means Huerta might end up shorter so I can salvage dialogue for Thane. The major goal for v3.0 is to make both of these scenes as immersive as possible, and I now have the technical know-how to do so. FaceFX is still an issue, but I've also discovered a couple ways around this that should be helpful.
  • Other NPC Dialogue -- Dialogue of other appropriate NPCs (EDI, Bailey, Joker, maybe others) will receive minor modification so that they ask Siha about Thane. The trick is to splice together the right audio and locate a dialogue where it feels appropriate and stays immersive.
  • Citadel DLC Edits -- These will likely be minimal. After looking into the files a couple things that were planned will actually be much more complicated than anticipated. I'm not closing the door completely, but that's the current status.

In addition to ThaneMOD and BackOff, I should be releasing a couple more mods soon. One with an assortment of non-LI dialogue changes. The other will be an NPC Appearance Overhaul that overhauls Kelly, and hopefully Bailey, Udina, and Aethyta. In the case of any file conflicts with BO, I'll bundle the NPC edits with it, as well.

Well, I think that's about it :]

Giftfish, first off, thank you for the amazing work you and the ThaneMOD team did to accomplish this game mod. I'm playing through ME3 with ThaneMOD now and it's been a far less depressing experience (and much more lore-appropriate, to me, to my femshep's relationship with her (romanced) Thane.

I especially love the seamless e-mails from Thane and the way they make him seem present throughout. I also love the touch of showing that Shep is in constant touch, but that her thoughts remain encrypted and private. It's a brilliant way to maintain their correspondence while also allowing us to basically imagine what she might be writing to him. I also like it from a character standpoint, as Shep is very private, and it's realistic that she would be very careful to keep her feelings and thoughts reserved only for the recipients.

I also loved the War Assets, the Paramour achievement, etc.

I did encounter the bug in Huerta about mid-game -- Shep walked into a hospital room and Thane's death scene started (and I couldn't even stop it, aghghg). But I installed the bug fix per the ThaneMOD instructions and when I resumed the game, this time that room stayed empty.

However, I'm now at Priority: Earth, and there has been nothing from Thane for Shep since Thessia. I also didn't get any messages from Kolyat, and it looks like now I missed an opportunity to get actually get Thane from Kahje.

So just a few questions for whenever you stop back by:

1. Is ThaneMOD 3 (and BACKOFF) released yet, or still in the planning stages? Because I used the ThaneMOD site and links, and they all sent me to files that were ThaneMOD 2, and from 2014. The bug fix was a much newer file. (ThaneMOD 3 sounds amazing, by the way.)

2. Did I mess something up by moving on to the final assault on Earth? I checked all terminals, talked to everyone, had accomplished all missions. I'm really bummed if I missed a chance to actually get Thane back on the Normandy before the end.

Thanks for the help, and regardless, thanks for making my latest ME3 playthrough a much happier experience!
