Ok I tried to tolerate varric, despite the fact he has done absolutely nothing cool or badass. But when people start talking about Cullen that's when I lost it.

First of all Cullen has done absolutely nothing he. he had that one part in DAO were he was trapped. Then in DA2 all he does is help you fight at the end. I mean seriously. What about sten. He actually is a cool character. His style and everything was badass. When you gain his approval it feels like you accomplished something. But what the heck did varric actually do that makes him so popular. I mean really its ridiculous. Varric did not do anything!!. Fenris had freakin leyrium in his veins and had a badass voice. Anders Was possessed by a spirit of justice and blew up the freakin chantry.. now that was badass. Varric's brother went ham. That's the best he had -.-. Please Cullen is the worst tho. im not saying he is a bad character. But what did he do to make him worthy to be a DAI follower.

I can explain the reasons why people might like Varric and Cullen, but there is a more simple solution: your opinion aren't facts, and people like different things. And being "badass" isn't necessary for being liked by people (not to mention that I don't find neither Fenris's voice or Anders's actions/being possessed "badass", but I digress).

Varric because he was only sane character who wasn't bi*** outside aveline.Cullen well just fangirls and some peoples like whining losers i guess thats why alistair was so popular.

Varric is the one character in DA2 who always has your back no matter what. (Well, there's the Dog, but he's not really a full party member.) He's also charming, witty and an excellent damage-dealer. No matter your class, you can't really go wrong with putting Varric in your party.

Varric was always a good person at heart. The fact that he cares that people died doesn't make him a 'goody two shoes.' Nor is it any sort of character inconsistency.

I hope that in DA:I Varric will have opinions and ideals instead of only becoming mildly passive aggressive if you rival him. If I wanted companions who nod and smile and never question my decisions I would just play Mass Effect.

Varric I can understand the praise, but not Cullen.

Varric is one of those "humorous on the outside, deep on the inside" character types. That's the way I see him anyway. I sort of felt sorry for him in Until We Sleep where we actually see Bianca. I'm assuming something bad happened to the girl.

Cullen just sort of let the "Ferelden Circle incident" shape his whole character in DA2. It's always "Uldred did this so mages are bad" kind of deal every time you talk to him. It's only at the end where Meredith was starting to kill the "named" characters did he realize that he was on the wrong side.

Well that's my reasons for liking them and seeing them as good additions to the team.

I don't understand the Cullen thing either (he was a pretty minor character...and not the most sympathetic one).

Varric was made to be likeable. He rarely complains, likes having fun, has no real polarising beliefs, is very loyal and is usually fair to you.


Cullen on the other hand, no idea. He was a bit of a dick in origins and seemed to have mellowed a bit in 2. People like a redemption story? He to me hasn't been in the games long enough to have such fanfair.

Cullen has A LOT of fangirls and Varric is just a nice, funny guy and a familiar face they've thrown to make us feel more confortable.

Varric didn't have problems on the same level of Anders and Fenris and Merrill. Isabella didn't have that many problems either, but she was a bit of a loose woman, y'know. I know, personally, that I liked his character because of the snark and swaggar and kindess to all of the other party members. Also, he's more of a "bro" than a "badass" (I'm not sure where Varric has been discussed as a badass, but I'm sure you heard it somewhere if you're talking about it).

The Cullen thing, well.... I dunno. I don't think it's a whining loser thing, but he hauled in the fangirls because of how... *sigh* (I hate this word).... adorkable.... he was with a female Mage Warden. I admit I was kind of supportive of having his character in DA:I (he can use some work, yeah? He's not been developed to the extent others have, like Varric or Cassandra), but after all of the hubub.... Meh. He's been a bit worn out. But that's just the way of the BSN.

Because Cullen is pretty awesome. He's going against the Templars to fight for Hawke. And people just like his character, and the potential for him. Really that's it for Cullen.
And fangirls fawn over that he's sexy.

And Varric is just fuucking awesome because he's the only one who doesn't have a dry sense of humor, and is sane and doesn't biitch and whine about everything. Just like everyone else besides Aveline.
And who can't love that chest hair?

I just figured Cullen scratches that "He's just broken and needs to be fixed, and I'm just the person to do it!" itch that some people tend to romanticize in their fictional relationships.

I don't understand why anyone would find that attractive, but there it is.

True. But not after Meredith and the templars (including him), cut through a lot of innocent mages just because Anders did something. (this is when you side with mages of course)

Cullen is a creeper and I don't like him. Varric is cool, but it would be a little weird to have him as a love interest. Always coming second to a crossbow would be awkward.
