Sadly now varric will serve as goody two shoes who will lost approval when you don't help peasants ahh another anders?

Varric
was always a good person at heart. The fact that he cares that people
died doesn't make him a 'goody two shoes.' Nor is it any sort of
character inconsistency.

Nah he never complained if i did something selfish and dic*** he complained only in some cases when it comes about saying "that is illegal" .In dai gameplay he was crying because inq refused save them lol stupid pesants instead keep

There is no need for that. The OP was meant as a friendly discussion about something I was confused about. Why did you feel the need to say this. I never bashed anyone's opinions. I simply said I do not see what the big deal about these to characters is

Your title comes off as a bit hostile, unfortunately.
I was going to say something earlier, but decided against it. You may want to clear things up before you get ripped apart.

I don't think Varric was a very sympathetic npc. Yes, he did say he was sorry about Carver, but he was completely silent about Hawke's mother's death. My other party members all offered their sympathy to Hawke after her death. I think Varric's role was mostly "comic releif."

Varric has been explained already in the thread, I believe.

As for Cullen, I'm still a pretty new fan of his. I only discovered him when somebody linked this tumblr post in a thread, and now I feel like such a fool for having overlooked such a cool NPC.

Agree with HHH89.
The OP states his opinion as facts.
I remember how people at Pax whooped at Pax when Varric spoke.
He has his fans.
Cullen has his fans. I think Bioware intended to pair Cassandra and Varric in Exalted March helping hawke. They just replaced hawke with the Inquisitor and expanded it.
Bioware decided to indulge the Cullen fans, so it's their choice .
I would have preferred other characters, but it is what it is and I still expect it will be a great game.

I have no opinion about cullen, other than he hates and fears Mages, and I played a Mage. For some reason, I don't think he ever realized I was a Mage, because he was friendly to me, even when my staff was in plain sight. I did admire him for sticking up for the Mages against Meredith in the final battle, though.

I do think some people are bashing the OP for silly reasons. Everyone is entitled to their opinion, but a simple question is no reason to get hostile.

I never said my opinons were facts. They were just my opinions. People should not have to always put "this is just my Opinion" in every thread because of the fear that some people will think its offensive. That's just ridicules. Why cant I just post the OP and people just discuss it without worry about weather the OP had the right tone?

In every OP on this network why is there at least 2 or more people that feel the need to force themselves to find something offensive about the OP. I guarantee you 100% that there is someone who is going to read this very comment and say its "offensive". Because I don't have the proper tone.

'Cause Varric is well-written, that's why.

And Cullen is actually pretty interesting as a character. He was clearly traumatized by what happened to him in Origins, and developed a firm "zero tolerance" rule against any form of blood magic as a result. Naturally this makes him weary of ANY mages since he suffered a great deal at their hands, but he isn't a zealot like Meredith. In fact, he even opposes her in the finale, even if Hawke decides to side with the Circle.

Varric did not do anything!!.

It's Friday evening and I'm bored, so here you go, as a moderate Varric fangirl I shall compile you a list.

Varric:
  • Was mentally stable as a rock. Never once flew off the handle, as opposed to both of the male LIs in DA2. Drama level == zero.
  • Always supported you and had your back. More importantly, supported the entire team. Looked out for Merrill, helped Anders, gave Hawke brotherly advice when she fell for a certain Tevinter refugee with more issues than hair on Varric's chest.
  • Never attempted to manipulate (hi, Anders) or browbeat (hi, Merrill) Hawke into anything.
  • Had a great sense of humour, never complained, never wallowed in self-pity (again something both Anders and Fenris were prone to do).
  • Was apparently most clever and worldly of the whole bunch, to the point where I'd semi-seriously call him the Godfather of the team.
  • Remained faithful to his mysterious past love and tight-lipped about her, too. Women like faithful.
In summary, Varric remained 100% stable, trustworthy and reliable throughout the game, from day one to finish. Don't know about others, but after DA:O and DA2 I am quite starved for a romantic interest that has aforementioned qualities.

Of course all of the above comes with a disclaimer that I maxed out Varric's friendship. No idea how he behaves if on rivalry path.

It's not offensive, it's misleading as to what your intent is in creating the thread. You've stated you don't want to troll and want to have a legitimate discussion, but people don't always read enough of the posts to understand that before they write something.
The BSN has a plethora of trolls. There have been bad experiences from people dicussing characters (just look at the ME3 romance threads), and people have just come to expect that when someone starts a topic with a different (but not nessicarily negative) view, that they are automatically flaming.
Just trying to help, don't jump down my throat, please.

I share your curiosity, OP. I have no clue what the fangirls see in Cullen. He was ugly as hell in DA:O and deranged by the end of Broken Circle. He's not as ugly in DA2, but not particularly compelling a character. Just another lackey of Meredith.

Varric was good, not great. Best DA2 companion hands-down, but damn, the DA:O party was truly special.

Only DA:O companion I'd take Varric over is Wynne (who I liked well enough, anyway). Alistair/Varric would be a push.

OP: other than the title, saying 'But what the heck did varric actually do that makes him so popular. I mean really its ridiculous. Varric did not do anything!!' doesn't exactly encourage a friendly conversation, in my opinon. And the faces you added at the end of your post aren't exactly friendly, unless you think the adding any faces is a symbol of wanting a friendly chat.
I'd have responded differently if you're post was worded differently.
