It's not offensive, it's misleading as to what your intent is in creating the thread. You've stated you don't want to troll and want to have a legitimate discussion, but people don't always read enough of the posts to understand that before they write something.
The BSN has a plethora of trolls. There have been bad experiences from people dicussing characters (just look at the ME3 romance threads), and people have just come to expect that when someone starts a topic with a different (but not nessicarily negative) view, that they are automatically flaming.
Just trying to help, don't jump down my throat, please.

I've always disliked Cullen because he's a templar, and unapologetic about how mages need to be put in their place.  He earned a bit of my respect for standing up to Meredith at the end, however.

Varric is cool as hell, though.  And I NEVER expected myself to say that about a beardless dwarf.

Varric is cool whereas Cullen is the complete opposite from being cool. I'm afraid the main reason why he has so many fans is because hes a pretty boy with a "sexy" voice. Nothing can do him wrong as long as he has his appearance and his voice. I wonder if Cullen would have this many fans if he was an obese fatman who had a scruffy beard?

Anyhow I had the pleasure of killing him in the Darkspawn DLC

@x-aizen-x: It's not about posting 'in your opinion'. If I said 'in my opinion, Morrigan sucks' it'd still be an ho stile post, not a friendly one. Saying that it's ridicolous for a character for being liked when he didn't do anything is hostile.
About the faces, I merely responded to YOUR post, when you said:

It's you that believed that those faces are needed to make people understand the tone of you post, not me. It you have to rely on those faces it's not my fault, and mocking me doesn't give you any points.

For Varric it's really his personality and banter that made me like him. He's funny, sarcastic, I enjoy his tall tales and, if you went with this route, the friendship between him and Hawke. Varric's just a fun guy to have around.

For Cullen, I think it's because people think it would be cool to have him be a party member since he was in the first 2 games. They believe his experiences in both games will make for excellent character development if he becomes a companion. Personally, while I understand where they are coming from I still wouldn't like him as a companion.

Yes very well said. But I will always wonder why he interpreted it as me trying to state my opinion as a fact when I was really just asking a question. I know people have different opinions and I accept that. But is it wrong to ask why? I mean Cullen was not even a follower and had very little involvement in stuff. So because of that I was just curious. But this guy felt the need to narrow it down to trying to say "I think my opinions are facts". Why did he feel the need to make this about opinions and facts. I was simply stating what I felt and then asked why other people felt another way. It wasn't that I was trying to say "Since I feel this way it wrong that you feel another". I simply wanted to know other people reasons. its very immature that I could not ask that without someone trying to say that I was trying to say my opinions were facts. After all aren't we supposed to be "DISCUSSING THINGS" that means people should be able to state their opinions, and be mature enough to handle others asking why they feel that way.

Im to defensive. You took the sentence "That's it I cant take it anymore" offensive. I gotta question though. What was about the other people that enables them to just address the question in the OP. And what was it about all of you that disabled you from addressing it.

I wasn't offended by what the OP said. I certainly wasn't trying to be offensive. It's Bioware's game. I personally wouldn't have chosen Varric or Cullen for DAI if it had been my call about the DAI party members. But it wasn't my call. It isn't the OPs call either. shrugs.

You guys really just came to this OP to start AN argument and nothing els. Then you felt the need to insult me like that. She thought I was jumping down her throat because I wasn't agreeing with what she was saying. Why did any of you come to an OP with not intentions of actually addressing what it says.

I haven't heard anyone discussing Cullen in a while aside from his fan thread. I don't see the need for why people keep bringing this kind of hate threads up constantly like his fans have talked about him in every thread in this board. When it comes to shallowness, guys and girls are just as guilty. Half the discussion on this board when they reveal Morrigan is about how ugly she looks.

And I did respond to your OP. Saying that people likes different things, and that being badass isn't the only meter to judge a character (as you did in the OP) is a way to respond to your question. It's not my fault you're obsession by one of the phrases in my post.

Right. There was no need to start a debate about opinions and facts at all. This thread had a topic. When you guys read the topic you decided not to discuss the topic, but to try and turn this into a "People like different things" discussion. The problem was that, non of that was called for. Sorry if the OP was not worded correctly. But I did genuinely want to know why Varric and Cullen were such liked characters. I understand that people have different opinions. But to me there was nothing wrong with just asking why they felt that. If they felt they did not need to explain themselves then I would have been perfectly fine with that because it was their choice. But don't join the thread just to and accuse me of trying to say that "All my opinions are fact". Im 16 most of my opinions are not facts.

I didn't state the reason why I'd find Varric and Cullen interesting characters because you post came out to me as hostile (I already said why in two posts, and you decided to ignore what I said.

And by walked in I mean crashed the Batmobile through the wall and then shoot the opera singer on a high note.

I have no idea about Cullen though. I found him annoying and stupid.
