Varric was the character a lot of people wanted to play when the played sarcstaHawke. Instead they got a foppish guy who hasn't figured out how sarcasm works and can't make up his mind.

Just kidding. I love my sarcastaHawke.

That said, I do not get the love for Cullen. He's a recurring character and that's cool, I'd like to see him back. I think he lacks the depth to be a companion or a major plot character and definitely lacks the depth to be a LI.

Cullen is the typical soap opera guy, like e.g. in Twilight and I guess a lot of (lonely, girly) women like such men. It's the same with e.g. the Dahlialynn girl and her corny mods with Alistair (Royal Wedding, First Night).

I don't see why Varric has to DO anything in order to be popular.  The OP seems to hinge onruling out the possibility of people enjoying the character for his personality since you focus on the actions of characters within the game.

I liked him in DA2 and would like to see him as an LI in DA:I for the reasons already mentioned: his sense of humor, staunch loyalty, etc.

Yeah, uh, I don't see what Dahlialynn's mods have to do with why some people like Cullen's character or how her mods are "corny."  Ones like the Royal Wedding do nothing more than expand on the existing lore; there's nothing corny about them.

Beyond that I wouldn't go making assumptions about the "type" of women who appreciate Cullen by making digs about them being lonely, etc.

Varric's a Dwarf. 'Nuff said. And he has chest hair. 'Nuff said again.

We better be able to put chest hair on our characters if we want.

Also, Cullen as a character concept has potential. But I'm wary if Bioware will use him to his full potential.

And he's probably got chest hair. Chest hair makes any character awesome.

Though I will say that some of Cullen's fans display some rather.... abhorrent mindsets, in that they think they can "fix him by romancing him". Some. Only some. A rather small minority. I've seen some people make such statements -- not on the BSN as far as I know, but elsewhere -- and there was a DA confession which said it as well.

Which isn't something I like.

Varric is written to be liked by everyone. Which was mostly successful. There may be people who only have a lukewarm appreciation for him, but almost nobody really hates him.

Why can't you have all of that and NOT romance him? not everyone needs to be romance-able.

I don't know. I liked Varric, but think having him return as a full companion is a bit too much. I'd rather have a complete set of new companions. I have no idea what makes Cullen so popular. I laughed when he ran away after my mage suggested to "get to know each other better", but other than that there wasn't much that impressed me. Let's hope Bioware will manage to change my mind about both issues.
