There is no need for that. The OP was meant as a friendly discussion about something I was confused about. Why did you feel the need to say this. I never bashed anyone's opinions. I simply said I do not see what the big deal about these to characters is

Your title comes off as a bit hostile, unfortunately.
I was going to say something earlier, but decided against it. You may want to clear things up before you get ripped apart.

LOL hostile how?

I don't think Dave of Canada was being nasty - maybe exasperated - but he makes a good point.

This question has been asked a thousand times before on these forums. In my experience people who ask them tend to be less interested in genuine reasons why people like a character and more interested in telling the world why THEY don't like a character and laughing at people who do. The underlying tone seems to be "well aren't people dumb for liking stuff I don't like".

You have every right to ask questions and discuss these things but sometimes people get a little fed up with feeling like they have to justify why they like certain characters. If you are genuinely interested why not read the specified columns for Varric and Cullen and see what they say about those characters?

Edit: To be clear, I know this may not be the case for this poster but just trying to explain why some people might react in this way to these questions.

Good point - but couldn't the same be said of the OP and others who start these threads? If you don't like a character why not shrug and move on? Maybe I just don't get it  - back to lurking I think.

If someone made a ''I like Tallis'' thread, BSN wouldn't just shrug and move on.  They'll start arming pitchforks and murder knives. But when OP makes a "I dislike Cullen and Varric" thread, he's just supposed to forget the whole thing...

I mean really its ridiculous. Varric did not do anything!!

Precisely.

Other than Varric, 90% of characters in DA2 are inclined to do extremely stupid things (which usually involves some form of elaborate suicide attempt). The rest have the tendency to do things which are not exactly stupid but still highly irritating (such as repetitive complaining and fussing over trivial matters).

So Varric doing "nothing" in comparison is a very welcome relief.

I want to do that with cullen

Sadly if things will go with varric as they did to him in dai gameplay trailer when she whine because you let burn pesants to save keep i will have to do with him that same what i did cullen.

About that i never saw him that way he was greedy but care about his "friends" but usually didn't had problem with my as**** hawke as long that wasn't toward him.Now they made him goody two shoes who will have problem with every practical decision i know it is only one trailer but as far that is how that looks when he have problem with saving useful keep instead stupid villagers that we can replace.

I get Varric hes a bro but Cullen? he is little more than a faceless npc. His character could have had any name and it wouldn't have made the slightest difference.

Varric is a nice person to have around to be perfectly honest and his role in DA:I was predictable since he joined Cassandra presumably to find out what happened to Hawke.

Cullen has no major plot role or any kind of significant importance in Dragon Age. You get to talk to him a few times and he, a knight-captain, attempted to remove Meridith, a knight-commander, from her control over the Templars in Kirkwall. Girls like him for some unexplained reason but I highly doubt he will have any significant role in Inquisition. He's just a mental scared man with this huge fright of mages and what not.

I assume Cullen's popularity came from playing a female mage in DAO - ambient dialogue makes it clear he crushes on the Warden, and any dialogue had with him shows him flustered and stuttering. No doubt a large number of people find this endearing. (Certainly his activity in the magical barrier isn't, imho.) Returning in DAII as a voice of temperance (against all epilogues of DAO, for some reason) probably aided this.
Plus, 'breakout characters', as they're called, aren't exactly rare. Boba Fett (of Star Wars fame) didn't even have any spoken lines, was just the one bounty hunter of the line-up to get anything done - yet his popularity exploded. Same with "Figwit" of LotR: Fellowship. And he never even had a name! (FIGWIT stands for "Frodo is gre-- WHO is THAT?")

As for Varric, there are literally only three remotely well-balanced characters in your party that don't whine, moan, and constantly wreck things around them. Only two of them are funny. Of those two, only one doesn't end up betraying you. That's Varric.
Varric is a great character in his own right, but I think a lot of his appeal would have come from the calm he provided, the character's stability. He was the only person who wasn't batsh** crazy, backstabbin', nor killing the fun in the party. He's your bro. He's your best friend. He's your immovable centre.
He also has a lot of importance in his role as the narrator, preventing him from being merely a satellite character despite his involvement in most events. In some aspects (Merrill and Bethany primarily) he is practically paternal, which again is endearing.

Then you factor in that Fanatical Fans are Fanatical, and... voilà.

There are I like Tallis threads and I want Tallis to return in DAI threads . Those have been respectful for the most part. Some said they liked her, some said they don't . There weren't pitchforks. I think the OP irritated some folks and some folks overreacted.
Bioware decided to put Varric and Cullen in DAI. It's decided . It's over.

Angrywolves is probably talking about how Greg Ellis, Cullen's VA, has already confirmed about recording in the studio for DA:I. We still have no clue if Cullen is a companion.

I love Varric but I'm...unsure about Cullen?
I remember being weireded out seeing him in DA2 after my epilogue in Origins said that he went insane and killed an apprentice before fleeing the circle. It seems Bioware retconned that but still, crazy is kind of a turn off for me and I'm fully expecting him to be a pro-templar version of Anders, if you know what I mean.

Varric is cool, because he is one of the few people that doesn't complain every 5 minutes, he's loyal and a good friend.
The only reason why Cullen is popular is because people want to sex him up and nothing else. In reality he's annoying idiot. Also, he was never confirmed for companion, one of the devs said some people will not like what they decided to do with his character, that's it.

I rather have new and less annoying companions. I hated Cullen ever since his lame rant about mages in DA:O, i wish there was an option to turn him into abomination.
