Progress!

Got a little slow period over the holidays, but I'm picking up. Still looking for help with...

• Building areas (Looking for a good builder!)
• Conversations (My English just isn't good enough)
• Scripting
• Ideas or anything really!

This is what I've done recently

• Added Simtools (chat commands and much more!)
• Integrated Vaei's custom animations with Simtools
• Added custom skills and integrated it with Simtools

Everything works like a charm! :)

And some more screenshots

Hello there. You have some interesting work here. I'd love to know more about the story behind Hill's Edge, or at least more details about the setting you chose. Is it casual RP or are you after deep immersion? I ask because your areas seem full of gothic mystery, yet there are humorous names for places such as Handful of Eyes (unless you made them up for screenshot purposes, then that's different!).

I understand the huge effort it takes to create a PW alone. I have been down that road before. I'd like to offer my support. However I do have my own project to look to - but if you need someone to help flesh out your setting, I'll see what I can do.

The NWN1 community still thrives but it is small, so, I believe we should help our fellow builders/players whenever possible. :)

Hey Kilaana and thank you for the offer, much appreciated, I will send you a PM when (and if!) you accept my friend request.

Hill's Edge is located in the forgotten realms, in the Sunset Vale. I try to keep close to the official material and the lore about Hill's Edge and the surrounding areas. The "Handful of Eyes" is an official monster-shop.  :)

This is a a map of Hill's Edge and some information about it's different locations.

Hill's Edge is a small city. And to be honest, before Hill's Edge, I stumbled upon Zwerkules Medieval City and thought I had to do something with that tileset! Hill's Edge felt like a good spot with two forests, mountains to the east, some hills, plains and a river. When I read about it, I felt that it was basically what I was looking for, and here I am! ;)

I am very fond of deep immersion, character development and roleplay. When I design my areas, I always try to think how someone can roleplay in this or that particular area. I try to think what I can do to enhance the experience and the feeling for a player and his character. That is why I generally use darker colors, areas lit by flickering candles or faint moonlight to express the darker mood I want Hill's Edge to be. I woudn't call it gothic, but more close to the medieval dark ages if you know what I mean.

My vision with Hill's Edge is to be a quite normal, forgotten realms world with a little less high fantasy and a little more sword & sorcery. Normal doesn't mean boring though. I look forward to thrilling adventues, stories, politics and character development.  I can't really explain what kind of players I want to attract, but somewhere here (x marks the spot) and above is what I hope for.

No roleplay  <------------------------x-------> Heavy Roleplay

When I started to build on Hill's Edge, I wasn't sure if I would finish it. So I kinda continue and hope someone will come and back me up with areas and scripts before I discover it's too much to handle alone! :)

I have a place to host it 24/7, and if I ever come close to alpha (it IS close to alpha!), then I'll create a forum and gods there is much left to do! :)

I have even have my thoughts of offer/merge all my areas to/with another developing module, if the haks and the vision is more or less the same. :)

Once again, thank you for your response and just ask if something wasn't clear or if you have more questions!

YF, thank you for the information.

I see much similarities between my vision of what a PW should be and with yours. The rest of the team I work with have more or less the same sentiment regarding roleplay and immersion. I don't like to advertise my own work in someone else's thread, but the setting for my PW is also very close to a medieval dark age setting with a feudalisitic society.

I feel I could offer you a place on our team if you'd like to work with us. You'll be part of our build team of three, and get to meet our resident scripter. Basically you'll get the support you're looking for. The only thing is that we're building for a much further region to the east - Impiltur. I am open to merging your areas with ours as long as you don't mind having to adjust them in order to fit with the Impilturan setting, as our region is much, much further to the east of Hill's Edge. I have thought about connecting both our regions into one PW, but it seems far too improbable due to the huge distances between both the lands. The only thing I must mention here is that we may not use certain tilesets that you are - such as Wild Woods and that interior inn-looking one. Those can be easily added if necessary.

I currently host on my own private server but we are looking into a long-term hosting solution as well. So there is that to consider, if we take off into Beta sometime early this year.

You can reach me at the forum link below if you want to speak more.

Of course, this is merely a friendly offer and please do not ever feel pressured to agree with what I said. The last thing I want to do is take you away from a project that is very dear to you.

Both of you are solid builders, and I'd welcome you with our team as well. The offer is out there. We've got a team with all the needed resources, all necessary roles have someone in them (except for a CC artist to make our custom content), and we will be releasing soon. That said we will welcome more talented people if they are interested.

Nevertheless, I dont want to stop you from doing what you are doing. Your work is great. Keep at it if it satisfies you. It is beautiful.

My advice is to also look for dedicated DMs and Web people too. You'll want to focus on the toolset, and you can't be in all three places at the same time! A dedicated DM will keep your core initial players active/informed while you roll out new content, and the web person should be able to get a good website up and running with all the needed info at hand. It takes a whole team to get a project like a PW to run!

Good luck on your project though, and I like what I've seen of it so far!

Thank you for the advice Artos13, but I need to make sure I get my areas and scrips before I can look for DMs. And so far, I am still alone.

Fog,

Poked around on the Social board on an idle whim.

I'm fairly free from obligations at the moment, so if you're still looking for a scripter, I might be able to help on-and-off. Whether to integrate the SoT stuff or work on new stuff.

PMing you my Skype contact. I don't use MSN anymore.

Oh it's progress. I build almost every day, and I got myself a scripter (not invictus). We have had some rewarding discussions about the mechanics. The experience and the death system is completed, and we are working on various scripts, major and minor ones.

Been working alot with the haks, adding even more content. Fixing robes, cloaks and heads, importing VFX and implement them with simtools  [That was a pain since it was around 500 vfx!]

Here are four screenshots! [Drag and drop to adress field for full size]

I am STILL in need of a builder that can match my style of building.

Here is some information about Hill's Edge! I would say it's a perfect spot for adventure!

Very nice, great work on Corm Orp too.

It's difficult to find someone who has the same style, so at this point, I think it's good you're pumping out the areas that are inspiring you to continue building, because it creates a consistency that many PWs lack with multiple builders.

Such as ambient/diffuse use of color, shadows on/off in an area, fog distance and color. Personally, I use a blue normally for the Moon - Diffuse Color to simulate moonlight, which illuminates placeables (if they're designed for it), as well as the tile diffuse (if the individual tile has no diffuse preset) on edging and sides of buildings/placeables. Moon - Ambient Color is an off black (20,20,20).

It really comes down to creating the right feel you're going for. PWs that have night areas just as easy to see in as their day, bother me, because there is no need for torches, casting light or some other light source. With the right ambient/diffuse on individual tiles, plus a good combination of area ambient/diffuse, nights can look stunning, and also give more POP during the day.

Also, I made sunlight versions of your moonlight if you're interested. I think it was a moonlight placeable from a tileset someone around here made that I came across on NWVault. I've scripts to create them based on day/night cycles if that interests you.

Another neat trick for Corm Orp or places players can enter, is to create that knowledge as a visual reference by using the default Bioware Window Placeable. Removing the static check, make it plot and activate it, will give the window a warm orange glow.

Carefully align it infront of tile windows on buildings players can enter. So not only will a player be able to use their mini-map and reference map-pins, but also signs you put outside and now warm glowing windows. Other buildings a player cannot enter, leave them without glowing windows.

Of course, for a true splash of color once the sun has set, do this for all the buildings.

FP!

Those are some good advice Fester, I thank you. I would like to see the sunlight version aswell. I got the moonlight lightshafts from City & Castle Interior Windows by Gaoneng. First it was multicolored to simulate a colored window, but I retextured it. I will try the trick with the windows.

Lighting is important for me, and it's often something most people doesn't bother with. We're working on a script to recolor all the Main Light and Diffuse lights during dusk/dawn to simulate dawn, dusk and night.

Thank you for the feedback Fester!

Interesting what you said about lighting. Actually haven't thought about it enough when building myself probably. It all sounds very interesting. Attention to detail is really what makes a good PW module I think. I mean there are just so many aspects. Lighting, sound, music, text, it just goes on...

A shame you're not hired by a company and have a dozen of employed people working on this...

ANNOUNCEMENT!

Hill's Edge is looking for a talented builder. You will be part of a small team with the possibility to shape your own areas, interiors, caves, dungeons or whatever you like as long as it fits in the setting. Alternatively you can make items, weapons or populate dungeons with monsters. There is much left to do and there is still room for your creativity!

• You know how to build, have done it before and/or think you can match the style of the current areas (see the screenshots above). We require details and carefully constructed areas that feels logical and atmospheric.

• You should be willing to follow the official material (Volo's Guide to the Sword Coast), but are of course free to use your own creativity with this.

• If you are interested, I would like a sample of something you have done before.

At the moment we are closing in on 70 areas. Most of the major heavy areas are already made. We work organized and methodically, are friendly and chatty and look forward to welcome you to our team! :)

Hill's Edge is closing in on 90 areas, and we are now a team of three hard working souls. We have a forum [soon to open] and a full working dedicated NWNX linux server which - as you read, keep the module online for testing.

We are still looking for people who would like to contribute with building, lore or anything else of worth.

I can also reveal two custom religious Prestige Classes that will be part of the setting from the start - Strifeleaders of Cyric and Joydancers of Lliira.

This time I will not post any screenshots, but a map of the region that the players will be able to see in-game aswell!

We are putting together the last pieces for an alpha! We have decided that there will be no character wipe between alpha and beta (and not between beta and gamma either), but upon entering the server during alpha, a player should be prepared that his character might be modified, his equipment swapped out or removed. Hopefully we aim that this wouldn't be necessary. Oh, and he will only be able to keep 10% of his earned experience.

Let me explain how our custom experience system works:

The XP system we employ is based around the concept of time-based mechanical progression. There are two distinct concepts at play - the actual amount of XP a character has, and the amount of XP a character can gain. The former is increased by killing things in combat and by a regular scripted XP gain. The latter is called the "soft cap" and is incremented over time spent logged in. The soft cap represents the "ideal" amount of XP for the age and activity of the character.

A character above their soft cap will see their experience gains reduced toward zero as they become further above the cap. A character below their soft cap will see their combat and faerie gains increased as the gap between their actual XP and the cap widens.

I've been working on NPCs, shops, items and to populate all those areas with NPCs! Also, we have finalized several dungeons that will be tested during the alpha-phase. The loot-system is just about completed, and so is death and respawn.

We are still looking for developers of all kinds! Especially someone who wants to put focus on lore, conversations and texts!

This time I'll show a selection of some custom made medium items!

So with regards to your "soft cap", so if one group goes questing and does some X adventuring over 4 hours, and another group at the same starting level does the same X adventuring over 16 hours, the latter group will get more xp than the former group?

That is correct, it's to prevent people from earning experience to fast and to award those that won't be able to play every day. Also, it naturally doesn't slow your progress down if you roleplay during the adventures. :)

The system works pretty similar to the one used in Shadows on Tilverton, you'll see when you go online.
