Mage is my favorite class, so I plan to make a bunch of different mages. I tend to go for the elemental spells (fire, ice), with the occasional primal (stonefist, lightning) or blood mage spell. My favorite Warden was a blood mage, though, and at least one of my Inquisitors will have that as specialisation.

Force mage + Battlemage, Bloodmage + Force Mage or Spirit Healer + Bloodmage for me

Force Mage was really cool. It was a small taste of biotics in Mass Effect and I loved playing an Adept. I'd like for more force spells to be in Inquisition. Pull and Throw combos would be cool to see on Frostbite 3.

Creation, then Spirit, then Entropy

Anything that can heal, boost, support - and anything that can stop/negate/protect from magic - then Hexes.

Whichever type of school/specialization that allows my male mage to be the most FABULOUS. Perhaps a spirit healer/force mage like I did in DA2.

This topic refers only to combat, and as an example lets use the class spacialisations from DA2 as templates for DAI. I want to know how people will play their mage. In DA2, I played as a mage heavily invested in creation, entrophy and little bit of arcane for defence. I would specialize as a spirit healer even though Anders has that mostly covered. I enjoy playing as a support mage as it is very refreshing playing as an attack mage before I got better at using tactics.

I prefer direct damage dealing, so I'll probably go with something like that.  Force mage or whatever specialization is similar to that, if at all possible.  I enjoyed the roleplay aspect of a mage trained for battle as opposed to healing, so that's how I try to play.

I won't be playing a mage until my third playthrough, so I'll see what the companion mages are like and what I think of their specs, and then build my mage accordingly. That said, I'm partial towards ice spells and healing.

Depends on what specializations make it into the game but I follow the "if it ain't broke, don't fix it", So a Heavy damage, Light Healing mage :)

In da2 i set my mages up as kings of CCC. So both ice skills, lightning arc, stone fist, stone prison, spirit bolt and virtulent walking bomb with the specs of bloodmage + spirithealer for support. I do favor spirithealer as a spec tough, mosly cause anders can't keep up with healing on the dragon for some reason in my games or to shun him out completely:P

I primarily play elemental mages. I really liked the way the DAO mage spells were organized and was disappointed to see frost/fire, lightning/earth split into two trees.

When it comes time to pick a spec I will always eschew blood magic, and most likely pick spirit healer. However, that depends on the other specs offered, if there are any. I really enjoyed the force spec in DA2 and hope for something similar that will make my choice of spec difficult.

Blood magic tends to be polarizing, so I think that players who want neither blood magic nor spirit healing abilities should have the option for something else.

I always take spirit healer as a specialization when I play mage.
However in DA2 I really loved the force mage specialization, so I hope they bring something like that back for DAI.
So...healing and crowd control are my personal favorites.

Force Mage if it is more effective. On the whole I didn't notice that much effect caused by the spells. especially against higher-ranked enemies. Ideally, we need something akin to warp to balance it out, and to make it more effective against smaller quantities of enemies.

I'll likely be a Qunari mage. I don't know what the all the specs are. I know blood-mage is going to be one of them, so I'll probably be that. I'm leaning towards fire/ice or lightning/earth combinations as a damage dealer, or I might go for the school of entropy and act as a support like Serrabaas usually acted.

As a human mage, it would come down to Arcane, some spirit spells, creation and entophy.

I don't know what I will play my true character as, but the first one is always a healer, because then I know I have a healer with me.

In da:o my mage ended up as spirithealer/arcane warrior/the overpowered thing from AA. besides that she pretty much just used grease/fireball. She was a bit too overpowered and not so fun. I have been thinking about replaying da:o and limiting myself to one build, or only abilities that makes sense for the warden.

In da2. My mage was a blood mage, who focused on entropy, whith a side of creation/arcane. Her job was basically to debuff the enemy. Carry as many buff she could and generally keeping Anders alive so he could switch between healing/damaging effectively. She was a challenge, but a lot of fun to play^_^

I hope to go for personality over build in da:I as well. Maybe I will even try to do it on my first play through since that was a lot more fun than simply powering through.

edit. I will play the Tal-vashot/Qunari first. Because female Qunari/Tal-Vashot:wizard:

Honestly, I've never liked playing pure, damage-dealing mage in any game. They tend to feel a bit spammy and one-dimensional, and therefore tend to end up being among my least favourite characters. Support mages offer a much more interesting challenge, but they tend not to be viable when forced to solo. I have not, nor do I have any intention of starting a mage in DA2 for this reason.

So instead, whenever I can, I would try to make a mage/warrior hybrid secondary character to my traditional archer rogue flagship character. For example, the most fun I ever had in Diablo II was when playing my martial arts Assassin with Tiger Strike + Phoenix Strike + Dragon Tail. I also had a blast mixing up combat and magic skills in the Elder Scrolls games, and while DAO's Arcane Warrior wasn't what I had in mind, being more of a mage who can take a beating rather than a more equal hybrid, I still had a lot of fun with that character. The appeal of such mage/warrior hybrids is that they tend to be like Swiss army knives, and the fun is from deciding which of the many tools at their disposal to use at any given situation.

All I'm saying is; Bioware, please bring back Arcane Warrior.

I wouldn't mind some of Merrill's tree as part of a Keeper spec. Wrath of Eluvian, Ensare, Stone's Throw, Wounds of the Past are all cool powers. Blood of the First was part of this tree but that was the blood mage specific power so I doubt that would be in a keeper spec.

I can relate to attack mages feeling one dimensional and a bit too simple which is why I wanted to change my role of playing a mage from attack to support. But as you said, being a support mage on solo like against the Arishok is going to be troubling.
