It should be like a good murder mystery: the reveal should be completely out of left field, and yet make perfect sense in hindsight.

Huh, I honestly can't imagine why someone would want the veil to reamin torn. What's your reasoning for it?

I will be playing a mage, and I believe that being closer to ( or maybe even one with ) the fade would lead to great advancements in magic. There were already many hints said by bioware in the gameplay videos, about tears altering and even empowering magic.

Ah, well I'm playing a warrior who wants the veil closed so that demons won't come through easily. So different strokes, I guess.

Not if you think he badass because he looks less flamboyant that other members of 13. ;)

Yeah, this one is kinda class dependant for me. I would probably try to close the veil if I was a different class though, as well. But I like mages, so.

I want an intelligent, sane (anti-)villain. Someone who is, if not charismatic, then at least not so vile as to be unapproachable and unrelatable. Someone with comprehensible goals acheived through reprehensible means. I have no desire for elder evils or mindless, corrupted gods. Better someone with ambition and with a lucid, thought-out plan. Or better still, a multitude of plans. I want to see the logic behind their actions and to understand their motivations. I want an antagonist who hurts us and makes us doubt. One that is more than just a distant, overwhelming threat.

Not at all. I enjoyed the character...

As for the comment about the whole Flamboyant thing..I apologies I didn't mean to insinuate anything. The 13 fit with the Universe they are a part of. But people that ridiculous don't belong in the DA Universe.

I dont understand you people.
You want to fight someone you can relate to? You want to fight ''yourself''? I thought antagonist was supposed to be someone you don't agree with, someone you don't relate to, hence the fight in the first place.

All an antagonist needs is to oppose the protagonist for some reason or the other.

I don't really care what kind of antagonist it is. I do hope they're not crazy though.

JCAP wrote...

IMO, we need an antagonist a little like the Illusive Man but different. He should be like: "You can disagree with my means, but don't argue with my motives".

I've yet to meet a BioWare villain whose motives I couldn't argue with.

The kind of antagonist that you don't THINK is an antagonist so at the end s/he can be all like "SURPRISE ANTAGONIST ATTACK BIZNATCHES!"

I'd like an antagonist that is well written and whose reasons for being an antagonist is well thought out, not like Bioware last two games.

And the last two games antagonist reasons are written badly how?

I don't want him as the main antagonist, but if Anders has died I want to go on a full-blown Vengeance hunt. That spirit has proven VERY dangerous, and potentially he can wreak a lot more havoc.

Well-written antagonists usually have plans that make some sort of sense given their goals.

Meredith was decent but needed more fleshing out.

You actually want to reason with a machine? Imo a faulty computer program makes a fine antagonist, it's wrong, it doesnt make sense and that's exactly why you are there to destroy it. I just din't like the space magic part, but that has nothing to do with the antagonist.

Maybe axe the red lyrium as well?

It didn't do much other than provide a rather ridiculous boss fight and an excuse to have a battle even if you sided with her.

You mentioned the Catalyst but the Illusive Moron was pretty dumb as well.

Having a flawed rationalisation doesn't make a character poorly-written.

:o

Let's not go there guys.

Don't want this to devolve into a ME3 ending war and get the thread locked.

Going to be difficult to define a "well-written antagonist" if we're not allowed to give examples of what we consider to be successes or failures.

And it doesn't make sense anyway.  The available evidence we have seems to indicate that someone physically infused with a spirit cannot die, at least not through something as ordinary as stabbing.  So that scene of him being stabbed and falling over seems entirely pointless.

This

Make it a sidequest chain where the Inquisition follows a string of Templar and Clergy murders and Chantry bombings.

I suppose it depends on whether the spirit is benevolent and has reasons for keeping you alive. If it was like you say, it would be impossible to kill abominations, right? In this I trust the writers, who said that if you killed Anders, he is dead period. But Justice/Vengeance is still trapped outside the Fade, and surely he won't just stay quiet - especially with an all-out war coming.
