ME3 had to be dark. It's not how I want my games to be generally, but it was appropriate for the story being told.

Though you could argue that "Dark" doesn't really mean anything if there isn't anything light to contrast it.

I'd say that its darker aspects were crammed in, kid, dreams, Thessia especially was incredibly forced, etc...

And as I said, that's part of why it's so enjoyable IMO.

Indeed, though I will gripe about the collector base decision not amounting to a hill of beans, as much as I will the Rachni.

Indeed. A whole whopping 10 War assets is totally worth the CB.

"Had to be dark"? You mean the story just existed and the writers had to adapt to it, instead of, y'know, making it up themselves?

I'd say I'd prefer the word bleak instead of dark. And more on a galactic level than a personal level.

I didn't like the forced emotions, dreams, the kid, Liara as my therapist, etc.

I tried to save him, but he wants nothing to do with the Cult of Shepard.

You know that line confused me a bit actually. When the he gets a reveal he rants at a few of your squaddies for their failure to join the Cult of Shepard, then he tries to kill the Cult of Shepard. Does he want everyone to be a member just so he can kill them? I get the identity crisis motivation but this just seems confused even for that.

They're adapting to this, remember?

Maybe I'm just as confused...

I don't think he wanted any cult, of any kind. "I'm the lone wolf you were meant to be.."

pfft thats from a different game and is thus completely irrelevant, espceially since only one of those reapers even appeared in ME3.

How do you know that? We never learned the other's names.

I'd say bleak and hopeless would work better than dark.

The game isn't bad because it's dark (and really, it's not all that dark if you have a perfect import). The problem is the writers expecting the players to be upset at things at the drop of a hat. The kid is just some random kid. Thessia is getting blown to pieces, but so is Palaven (and it comes on the heels of a reveal that makes it seem karmic). Leandra's death is no less manipulative but the writers took time to establish her, so it worked better.

They are the ones that put the Reapish Armada there in the first place. They desperately wanted to show "all-out galactic war" and such, to the detriment of sensible plotting.

It does say something about our civilization to see how most of our entertainment is a competition to provide the biggest images of devastation anyone could imagine. The Will Unto Destruction indeed.

People are desperate enough for their happy ending that they're willing to beg for a narrative magic wand.

The games were always dark and hopeless, ever since Eden Prime. The one thing that kept it "light" was Shepard. He's like the Kamina of the setting.. the person with "fighting spirit". What makes ME3 more bleak is he's losing that fighting spirit. We're railroaded a bit, with the dreams and regrets. ME1 and ME2, you're this soldier who believes no matter what, and people believe in you in turn.

Citadel felt completely out of place (the party screamed epilogue!). I have a hard time accepting that Shepard plays arcade games whilst millions of people are dying each day...

Indeed. As has been said, there are far too many moments of 'feel bad here' stapled onto ME3.

I didn't care about the kid. He made his choice, and I've got more important things to worry about. It's a war. People die.

I didn't care about Thessia. As far as I see, they're getting what they deserve. I wanted to look the Asari ambassador in the eye and say "The cruel and unfortunate truth is that while Thessia is attacked, we can take our forces and regroup elsewhere". I wanted to tell Liara to get over herself and stop being a whiny cry-baby.

I'd still yell at Joker, though more out of being angry that we may have just lost our chance to defeat the Reapers (snapping to pressure) than out of pity for Thessia or the Asari.

To much of Shepard's reactions are beyond the control of the player.

It's the corner BioWare forced the narrative into, David.  It is what it is.

Still waiting on that conventional, non-Crucible victory solution from you that doesn't rewrite ME2.

I need downtime too dammit! If a billion people have to die while I get my beauty sleep (and thus am in the best state to fight and make clear, rational decisions), so be it.

Well, to be fair, it's not exactly a coincidence that it "screams epilogue". It absolutely looks like the non-Waltersian part of the writing team do indeed realize that something went seriously wrong with that ending, and took steps towards offering something of a fix substitute. Unfortunately it was too little, too late.

I gave you a rough outline. How in depth do you want? And why am I not allowed to change ME 2 or ME 1?

I agree... but that's kind of my point :)  I understand that the natural conclusion to the story had to be war with the Reapers, but I wish the game had more "fun" moments, like Elcor Hamlet and whatnot. Maybe it's not possible to reconcile the two, and maybe that's why we got the game we did. But I'm hoping that, going forward, we can keep the games with a tone similar to ME2... which is to say that there's some great, heavy story stuff going on, but also a lot of fun and levity, especially when navigating the hub worlds and interacting with your crew in the downtime.
