Whut. You want an elf companion with no personality or opinions? Should they frolic? Manic pixie dream girl/boy ho!

Op.... I think you missed the point here. There's suppose to be something wrong with every companion in da.

Except Varric because he's clearly super-awesome.

DAI will show you his baggage. Oghren had baggage in DAA and Anders in DA2.

Zevran was nice though, and nice is not necessarily "good".

As long as they don't show up at the end of the campaign even though I completely ignored them throughout the game. This happened with Fenris in one of my DA2 playthroughs and was actually a bit awkward and funny at the same time.

This is one of the reasons why I didn't want him back as a companion in DAI.

Hopefully Bioware won't ruin his character too much.

There's something wrong with all the companions in the series, not just elven companions. On the other hand, fun is subjective. I found Zevran to be fun.

Merill could have been a good companion, except that they made her a freaky blood mage in DAII, Fenris was too over the top emo. Zevran just seemed redundant to me, because by the time he joins I usually already have Leli fully leveled...and Zev hits on anything that moves.

False. He did not hit on the dog.

I liked Fenris (he had an interesting back story and had to deal with abuse, so it's no wonder he's "emo"). Zevran also had an interesting and amusing back story. I don't remember much about Velanna.

Merril and Talis/Tallis/whatever her name is are the only elves I had a problem with. I thought she was cute at first, but Merril quickly turned into an ultra moron and wow I can't stand her anymore. Tallis supports the Qun so she can GTFO--she'd be okay otherwise.

I don't care if they're "fun" and "nice", but so long as they are actually an interesting character that is what matters to me. Both Zevran and Fenris had awesome backgrounds and I hope the new elves do too.

Yes, he did. He just did it when you weren't around...

You'll be hard-pressed to find a "normal" elf that knows combat or leaves the alienage, coven or clan since most elves have been conditioned to believe they should keep their heads down and keep out of the way of their human betters. Most Dalish elves stay hidden in the wilds, most Andrastian elven mages try to avoid Templar notive same as most human mages, and most alienage elves keep their heads down and keep to their scut work.

Any elf you encounter that deviates from this submissive, subserviant, reclusive, socially-imposed archetype is going to be "abnormal" by default. Either because they have a quirky personality that allows them to learn combat anyway despite the wrath it might bring down from humans (Adaia and CE Warden), getting exiled from the clan so they actually can walk among humans (Merrill and Velanna) or because they're from a place or organization where elves can actually learn combat (Zevran from the Antivan Crows, Fenris from Tevinter, Tallis from the Qunari society, etc) which would give them quirky personalities just in lieu of their situations. (How "normal" can you be receiving torturous Crow training or Tevinter brainwashing?)

Most elves without these extraordinary personalities or circumstances stay in the alienages raising families, stay in their Dalish clans away from humans, or stay hiding or trying to avoid the wrath of Templars. Elves as a culture are more community-oriented than humans, so they would need an extra push to stand out. And, of course, socially-imposed human prominance makes it so an elven companion would need to be cheeky in order not to be cowed into sumission or hiding before they even began.

Plus, most companions aren't "normal" period, so I don't see where this double-standard comes from.

Supporter of the dehumanizing (depersonizing?) totalitarian regime.

How does that make her less nice or less fun? Nice people can be unethical people or have extreme sociopolitical viewpoints.

So you just want an elven companion that shares all of YOUR personal view points? That's what it sounds like anyway.
Zevran was funny and a great companion. He just doesn't share your opinions on assassins so that makes him a bad person? Who do you blame for a contract killing, the man who pays him or the assassin himself?

Both. Unless the assassin has to do it or die, like Zevran, in which case I blame the contractor and the organization.

tbf if you just had a normal companion elven or otherwise, that person wouldn't be very interesting.
