Last night I entered combat in the Dead Roads, and it all started going horribly wrong.  Having brought the mob that was charging for me under control with a well placed grease and fireball while Shale slowed them down with a barrage of rocks, I noticed incoming arrows from 3 different directions, so sent Shale and the Dwarf to deal with them while my Mage and Morrigan kept hammering away at the mob.  It was then that I noticed the Ogre charging in.  Mana was running low, and I didn't want my two melee characters facing an Ogre alone while at the mercy of the archers, so I made them pull back to the mages.  Morrigan slept the two remaining archers and hit one of them with horror while my main character turned against the last of the initial mob by himself with only his wand to rely on, hoping the melee characters would get there in time to finish him off.  That's when the Ogre decided to pick up a boulder and hurl it at us.

As all but my mage fell to the floor, the situation was looking dire, but not impossible.  Fortunately my mage managed to finish off the one who was on him, so decided to use the spare seconds available before the Ogre got to us to down a mana potion and hit the others with a couple of heals, while the last archer to glee in filling him with more arrows.  Back to their feet, Morrigan froze the last archer, killing him in the process, while the Dwarf and Shale charged toward the Ogre to keep it away from the mages, exchanging several blows that had me thinking "Phew, I seem to have this under control."

Only then did the three shriekers (is that what they're called?) appear.  Their appearance filled me with dread, for I had struggled against them before, only this tme there was two joining the very healthy Ogre, while another chose to pay the mages a visit.  Shale and the dwarf suddenly became stunned, and Shale was quickly reduced to a pile of rubble by the Ogres blows.  My mages were struggling too.  In desperation Morrigan assumed the form of a Bear while my mage hit the Ogre with a swarm in the hope it would help the Dwarf out so we could have him join us.  That's when the Ogre picked up the Dwarf and shook him like a rag doll within a pixel of his life,

What could I do?  The Dwarf couldn't drink a health potion, and a heal spell from my mage would take too long to cast!  It was clear that I needed the Dwarf alive to stand any hope of survival, so I cast a forcefield on him and hoped beyond hope that my mages could survive long enough on their own.  The forcefield got to the Dwarf in time, freezing him in mid air as the Ogre was forced to let him go (would have made a great screen cap, but I was too caught up in the moment).  So, although the Dwarf had only a pixel of health remaining and could no longer fight back, he was at least invulnerable to the Ogres blows, who was clearly frustrated at the swarm still buzzing around him.  Much to my relief the Ogre was too dumb to leave the Dwarf alone and continued to rain punches against him, leaving my mages alone to deal with the shrieker that was attacking them.  In her Bear form, Morrigan fought like a Demon and killed it, but this caught the other shriekers attention.  Obviously smarter than the Ogre, they left the Dwarf and started running toward my mages.

It was at that moment the Ogre finally succumbed to the Swarm and keeled over.  Within seconds the Dwarf was free of his forcefield, and with no combatents to distract him, took advantage of the situation and downed a powerful healing potion before running to the mages aid.

While Morrigan in Bear form performed well, my main mage grew closer to death, but managed to hang on long enough for the Dwarf to go berserk and kill the final 2 beasts.

The dust settled, and I breathed a huge sigh of relief as they sheathed their weapons and Shale got to his feet.  I couldn't believe it!  Time to hit the save button!

It's been ages since a game presented me with such challenging combat.  Made me remember Baldurs Gate with fondness.  Thanks Bioware! :)

Great post Quillmaster, I can remember I had plenty of desperate moments like these during my first play through lol. The problem was I underestimated this game.. I thought I could just walk through it on the toughest difficulty. But I have to admit I was forced to lower the difficulty level in many of the boss battles to begin.

I think the difficulty levels for this game are set perfectly. Challenging but not impossible for most players. My only complaint is the 1 hit kills at the end which make an otherwise epic final battle too easy imo.

Once you eventually master Dragon Age on nightmare and know the best spells and tactics to use in each scenario, simply start handicapping yourself and restrict your party to 1 mage. This makes you reconsider your tactics significantly Posted Image
