Welcome. As a celebration and preparation for the upcoming sequel, I decided to start a video playthrough of the legendary Action RPG, Dark Souls. If you have questions about strategies, tactics, or whatever regarding the videos, feel free to throw in a post below.

While notoriously difficult, the game comes with gorgeous environments, a slightly open world
(Think Metroid) level design, and some of the most memorable/challenging boss fights I've seen.
Bon Appetit. (Click The Links Below To Access the Videos)

Are you still upset? Even if you insult my top 10 persons in history, I wouldn't be as annoyed as how you became so for my unintentional pyramid quoting.

Dark Souls? I couldn't keep up killing skeletons in level 2 (That Castle near that deep valley?) because they were too many and tough.

Nope, and I don't see why it's being brought up. Try a comment on my profile instead of on an unrelated topic. Thanks.

Probably Undead Burg. When I originally rented the game, I probably spent about 2-3 hours in that spot until the taurus demon was down. It's definitely a make-or-break section of the game, since the first part in the asylum is a much more leniant experience.

Close calls in that second part

Yeah, Undead Burg starts popping out the traps/mobs like no one's business. Killer barrel of firey death nailed me for avoiding it too late, got very lucky there. I think the most frustrating spots in the game would be either Blighttown or Tomb of Giants, and that's going to be a whole new level of pain...

The game isn't "notoriously difficult" (as most people claim it to be). People now are so used to games holding your hand at every step of the way, that any game which doesn't do so is labelled difficult. The game is as hard as say, LoZ: Ocarina of Time (in fact, the two have a lot in common)

That being said, amazing lore + unparalleled gameplay + stunning visuals + attention to detail + jolly co-operation = my favorite game this. gen.

Looking forward to watching your videos.

That I don't quite agree with, but I'll agree that it's easier than it's hyped up to be. I meant that a lot of popular culture and such would point out a notable difficulty difference between most.

That being said, amazing lore + unparalleled gameplay + stunning visuals + attention to detail + jolly co-operation = my favorite game this. gen.

Also a plus. I like how it doesn't just hand you all the lore in one giant package of exposition. Definitely great on the visuals side, I remember my reaction when seeing Anor Londo. Good times.

C'mon Undead Burg ain't that bad. Only really had trouble with the two Black Knights and Havel The Rock.

Imagine a new player (starting off with the Master Key) wandering straight down to Blighttown. That'd make for some lolworthy stuff.

For me, the most frustrating part was the Crystal Cave... that place was riddled with cheap moments. Wasn't a big fan of Lost Izalith/Demon Ruins either, which was prob. the most poorly designed area of the game.

Tomb of the Giants wasn't that bad for me as I (fortunately) came across a Skull Lantern just before entering the area. It was actually pretty fun.

Yeah, Demon Ruins wasn't the most memorable area.

I'll definitely remember to bring a skull lantern in ToG since I'm not playing as a mage character. Relatively speaking, Undead Burg isn't that bad - it's more like the "Alright The Kid Gloves Are Off" section. It was more taxing when I started the first time years ago.

I remember reading an article where the writer describes Dark Souls's approach to storytelling as archaeological whereby you dig up lore piece by piece, and learn it all on your own. I mean, you can play through the entire game, and completely miss out on even some of the important lore because it's so subtle (i.e. Gwynevere and the sunlight in Anor Londo being an illusion created by Gwyndolin)

I also love the fact that a lot of it is left for the imagination of the player. Most details aren't set in stone, and you have a lot of speculation on the past events. Just the way I like my lore.

Really, Dark Souls isn't a hard game.

It's a traditional RPG which means if you're under-leveled for a region, enemy or boss, you're going to get your ass handed back to you. It's an action RPG in that you can actually beat the game without leveling up if you have the skill and have memorized enemy attacks.

RainyDayLover is right in that this is simply a game that doesn't hold your hand. Therefore it appears to be hard because when you haven't discovered all the mechanics (i.e weapon scaling, upgrading weapons and armor and ascending them). Once you do all that then you see it's not really that hard after-all.

Dark Souls will hand your ass back to you just as Baldur's Gate will if you've created a crap build and party and go into a particularly tough encounter under-leveled.

The director even said he would prefer Dark Souls to be described as satisfying rather than difficult.

Did any of you fight The Forgotten One in Castlevania: Lords of Shadow? That's a true end boss. He'll kick your ass on normal difficulty. Paladin difficulty is a real nightmare. Even the old Castlevania's were harder. Then there's Dragon's Dogma on hard difficulty. These are the real difficult frustrating and unfair games (LoS on paladin, DD on hard and regular CV's on normal). How many of you died to Death in Castlevania 1? Probably everyone. I never did get past him...(although I will one day, I swear it!)

Dark Souls is a balanced old-school game. That's it's difficulty. Although cursing yourself and using the Calamity Ring could be considered a hardcore mode in which case I'd say you can make it harder than all the games above but without that stuff, I find it be very balanced. If you die, it's only because you deserved it.

The fact with DkS is that you can make your character a pretty strong character when you upgrade all their equipment (which scales) and this isn't cheating because it's a mechanic of the game. I find myself one hitting every enemy by LV 40 after Anor Londo (which took me 30 hours to reach the first time and now 10 hours). In DD Dark Arisen on hard mode, regular enemies still require multiple hits to die even at the max level with the most powerful weapon and bosses are still as hard as ever.

I mean I probably only died 30-40 times in my first DkS playthrough. That's equal to the number of times I died to Baldur's Gate end boss.

Dark Souls may not be anywhere as difficult as it's rep implies, but it's definitely not anywhere near the ease of Ocarina of Time, whether boss fights or your typical mobs.

Still, it's my top game of all time so I'm looking forward to watching this.

Really, Dark Souls isn't a hard game.

People have varying definitions of hard :P

Dark Souls is a balanced old-school game. That's it's difficulty. If you die, it's only because you deserved it.

True, and that's what allures me to this game more than others. A lot of "hard" titles end up feeling pointlessly difficult to me instead of requiring the player to learn from their mishaps. It's all too easy to just smack a giant health bar to make a boss fight difficult. I'm always going to favor Action-y RPGs over the turned-based stuff, I'm not as interested in commanding orders than actually performing them myself.

Significant Update, I'll be uploading a ton of new videos today, getting up to the terrible two. I'm particularly happy on how the beginning of Part 9 "Eyes on the Prize" turned out.

Why not go full man mode instead?

Also, I agree with the others who say that DaS isn't that hard of a game. It's just a game that punishes failure, e.g. Four Kings wouldn't be nearly as infamous if it just sent you back to the start of the fight whenever they killed you.

So was I the only one who used the "easy mode" sunlight maggot in the Tomb of the Giants? No way in hell was I giving up my shield for a friggin' lantern. I lived behind that shield. It was safe and cozy there.

My character was part turtle, part onion. Just like she will be in DS2. I'm hoping.

I just ran like hell with a 2-Hander and just started slashing at em XD used humanity once I ran out of Sunny D.

About the same( didn't know about the maggot though), I had to go knight for a game like this. :P With a certain OP enemy in there, it's very justified to stick with a shield.

Got 8-13 Uploaded, still working on the last 9 or so. Up to O&S, thought that first run at them was a good place to stop.

That guy was skipping half the enemies.

Full man mode is punching every enemy to death at SL1.

That's how Andre is where he is today (and why he knows so much).
