Pretty much. I've read dreaded Miranda thread expecting a pit of depravity, but it was nothing special. There were a couple of weirdos, flaming and trolling. It's just anti-romance brigade loves it's tiresome agenda.

Yes, totally. The "anti-romance brigade" made up the fact that the Miranda thread split into two groups which hurled insults at each other, devolved into creating two threads which both sides flamed each other which devolved even further when every other thread was dragged into the huge mess which led to the entire sub-forum being deemed unsalvagable and shut down.

If it's "nothing special", it wouldn't have been shut down.

Of course it is. It also irrelevant, not because it is worthless mind you, but because it is actively against something that is unavoidable. As long as romance exists, there will be discussion about it. Where best to do that than the game forums itself?

Considering how the last forum was shut down and all romance discussion was shunted to groups (which are being revamped apparently) I don't see it making a comeback.

So does that mean we should get rid of the off-topic discussion board as well?

off-topic section is remarkably civil actually.

I don't see why a previous offense would completely eradicate any future attempt. I know history repeats itself and we'll have some sort of flare up if and when the forums are opened, but maybe we can use that knowledge to nip the problem in the bud before it leads to forum closure?

I'm not a mod though so I may be too idealistic :P

And I wouldn't be surprised if Bioware is just tired of the continual bad reputation the sections have given the site.

I was just making a joke about how Priestly wanted to shut down the off-topic section. :P

I thought Bioware was absolutely thrilled about the fan that put in all the hard work about what Tali's sweat may taste like.

I'm not entirely certain but I don't think there is much of a bad reputation in this regard.

If anything, the ME3 ending discussions produced the most vitriol and negative press ever, but let's not open that can of worms.

Probably not, but because DA changes casts every game, I imagine they wouldn't get as bad.

Hopefully. ~_~

I think that this is a really good point.  While there are some characters that cross over between games, most characters have had a single game story-arc (with either a cameo in the next game or a role in a non-game source like the books or comics).  I think that there won't be the same incorrect assumption that supporters need to be vocal about getting content in upcoming games since the norm for DA has been to have very limited content in the next game.

The only exception to this has been Varric, who will be the first character to be a full-game companion in two consecutive games.

It seems rather flawed logic to assume that:  1.) because it happened in the past, we can't ever have it again; and 2.) because it happened with another game, it will happen with this game.

BSN has been a laughingstock long before DA2 or ME3. And even now, if you go to another forum (or even this very one) and ask about it. You'll probably hear about how weird the romance threads were several times over.

The writers put in a joke about it in Citadel as well.  The convo between the Turian and Quarian on Illium in ME2 was also a joke about the Tali thread talking about contact with Quarians.

Personally, I don't really care, but I can see why Bioware would see it as a bad image.

Why does this matter though?  If Bioware keeps the forums open, then that shows a level of support from them.  They are the target audience for the information in the threads.  Who cares if poeple on other boards think they're a joke?  How does this make any difference in the development of the game or the fun that people have posting on this board?

Because it gives the company as a whole a negative reputation. Betheseda has weird and creepy fans too but you don't see them supporting all of the weird as hell mods on their website do you?

Right, but BIOWARE has chosen to keep BSN open.  They have staff members who participate in the forum discussions and act as moderators.  That indicates, to me, that they have not felt that the BSN has been a detriment to their company.  If they don't think it's a problem, then we shouldn't assume that it is.

The BSN doesn't have the DA nude and sex mods in its projects?

But yeah.  Bioware does have an image as that 'have sex with everyone and romance whoever you want' image which is why you see Gaider making jokes about how some fans think all they write is romance characters and Varric making a joke with Hawke about him sleeping with half of Kirkwall in one of the DLCs.  Of course, a good portion of the fanbase does buy Bioware games for exactly that content, so while it may not always be a priority, its essentially on a 'must-include' list for their games.

They are also "revamping" the entire site if you hadn't noticed

Given DA's different culture (the absence, basically, of the "support" factor influencing content for specific characters), I don't think the same thing would happen.

The shift to groups, for example, immediately diffused the whole situation because that element was removed. Fans could still discuss/gush, but there was no longer any sense that the amount or tone of the discussion/gushing would have any impact on anything.

Groups are probably a pretty good solution for romance and character-specific discussion.

I don't think such a forum would automatically melt down in the future, but there may not really be any need for one either.

i dont understand all the doom and gloom. 1 game had its romance section taken down so statistically, the next should be successful

Honestly, I see no problem with the way things are now. Want to gush - join a group that does that. Want a serious conversation - join a more serious group. Want to bash somebody else's waifu - join a group that does that. If it doesn't exist - make it and then you can come back and complain about how lazy Bioware's moderation is. The good thing about groups is that you can post what you want, moderate yourself and nuke the group if it gets out of hand. That's not the case with the forums. Now the forums are way slower and more docile but back then you would have needed to have at least 3-4 mods working at all times. I, however am of the opinion that a good forum should moderate itself. That and 90% of BSN has to read a Interwebz 101 book before being allowed to make an account. This is the Internet. If you expect to be a bunch of kumbaya singing, hand holding community you are going to be disappointed.

And recently requiring registering games (which I agree with).  Then, the fact that most staff don't really come around here anymore (may change once the game is closer to release).  Of course, you also have more than a couple of staff commenting on how chaotic or vile these forums are.

I really hope not. Then again, it would be nice to send all the constant love interest threads into their own dark quarantine section as to not contaminate the rest of these forums.

I've never really contributed to a romance subforum so I'd feel robbed if I didn't get a chance to this time around. Yah know. Just to feel like part of the gang.

To be fair, no one who didn't have a registered copy of ME3 could post in their forums. That didn't stop ANY of the chaos there, including the events leading up to Priestly hitting the Self Destruct button on the entire Character/Romance forums.

I wasn't really talking about it stopping any chaos really as much as it now at least makes sure those complaining about the game have bought it.
