I was reading it the other day and it was a good idea to close it down. Still that punishes every one else who wasn't involved in it to close it down completely.ImperatorMortis wrote...

edit: why'd they close it again? cuz miranda fans started attacking each other, right?
Yeah the miranda fans were going nuts iirc. You can still read the threads,
You think there will be another character, and romance discussion forum?

It's so that non-character/romance topics are not hijacked with those discussions in the future.
So the fans that frequent those threads are creepy/weird. So what? Wouldn't you rather they post their ish elsewhere?

All of which are handled in groups. No need for a separate forum.
in fact, once the game is released, BW should just make a group for each companion and put an announcement in the spoiler forum advertising them. All romance threads that pop up outside the groups can be locked and pointed at the appropriate group as soon as they're noticed by a mod.

I'm sure more will come around closer to release. Indeed, it's probably safer to stay away right now, since any minor thing about the game will be blown out of proportion. Other than a firm denial that something won't be in the game, I haven't seen very many posts along those lines. Most of the recent ones are more technical (like this one about the Murder Knife), or about general topics rather than specific ones.HiroVoid wrote...
Then, the fact that most staff don't really come around here anymore (may change once the game is closer to release). Of course, you also have more than a couple of staff commenting on how chaotic or vile these forums are.

It's the culture of "support" for specific characters/romances that really created the problem with the ME character sub-forum, I think, I guess going back quite a ways. Fans and Bioware itself probably share responsibility for this.
Basically the perception was, I guess rightly to a degree, that sheer amount of support for certain characters/romances determined quantity/quality of content in the game(s). And, after ME3, that support could provide more content/improved content in DLC.
Ultimately, that's just not a good dynamic. For discussion on the forums, certainly, and perhaps also for the community as a whole.
Creative decisions should be perceived as separate from "fan support," which should be directed, probably, to the games/characters/series/community considered as a whole.
Otherwise you get this rivalry/competition/lobbying sort of dynamic.
Agreed.
The Mass Effect team contributed to the toxicity. There would have always been a feeling that forum spamming resulted in content changes but they outright stated that forum screamers determined romances and squad spots. Not helpful.
I doubt things would have gotten so nasty if people hadn't felt that their favorite character's role in the game was at stake. The perception that it was a competition created a very unpleasant dynamic of winners and losers and I remember some very rude spiking the football behavior going on with certain fanbases.

I'd also like a "Dragon Age Lore" forum like Bethesda's boards has for TES, but I can't see them doing that.

Maker, please let them do it. It's a great way to confine those discussions into one neat, easily ignorable sub-forum.
That is in fact the idea behind the BSN.

And that would be fine.

Indeed. I agree that this was the main problem, and that Bioware actually helped create this dynamic by making popularity-based decisions about characters and their content didn't help.wolfhowwl wrote...

Is it that much different than them adding multiple races to DA:O after fan compalints? Something I'm glad they did, don't get me wrong, but responding to fan requests isn't inherently bad... although doing so for romance options is a little silly, imo.

I think there is a bit of a difference, yeah, at least in terms of its impact on how fans interact with one another. Responding to a general desire for more of something, for example, is very different from, "There are six squad spots, two are up for grabs, who is spamming the forums more?"
I'm exaggerating, perhaps, a bit, but basically that is the impression people had.
For characters, the Citadel DLC, for example, does a good job of responding to the general desire on the part of fans to spend more time with characters. But the whole cast is included, at least to the extent possible, and the emphasis is on the camaraderie of the whole thing.
And there was plenty of that in the character forum as well, it's not like it was constantly unpleasant.
But people are attached to the characters and, especially in ME3, with the story ending, that was a big focus for people. So, the lobbying/support dynamic which had existed, I guess, for quite a while, ended up being really divisive, at times, in that context.
That doesn't take responsibility away from us, as fans, but it didn't help.
