I have decided that I am going to throw
caution to the wind and ignore all the naysayers and actually have a
fair good attempt at making a decent shapeshifter.
I am also
going to have the mage wearing proper armor and wielding proper weapons
and I am going to do this with Spirit Healer as my second spec.
"But mages can't wear armor and use proper weapons"
Last time I checked the only real restriction on weapons was strength for most with dexterity for daggers and bows yes?
So
if I concentrate my attributes on mostly Strength, Dexterity and Magic,
I can pretty much wear the gear and take the following spells
Shapeshifter - spider shape, bear shape, flying swarm, master shapeshifter
Primal - rock armor, Stonefist, winter's grasp, frost weapons, cone of cold
Creation - heal, rejuvenate, regeneration, heroic offence, heroic aura, heroic defence, haste, spell wisp, grease, spellbloom
Spirit - walking bomb, death syphon
Entropy - weakness, paralyze, miasma, mass paralysis, drain life, death magic
Might swap out rock armor and stonefist for group heal and revival from the spirit healer spec.
This
is more of a RP build than power build, am not looking for my character
to be uber tank, dps, healer. They are more of a 'team' player than
'the shiznit'.
Appreciate any decent thoughts on the idea though.

If you want to use Shapeshifter at all you need to pump Strength high, as far as I understand. It seems the forms are supposed to use the Magic stat for damage but are bugged and pull from Strength instead. Let us know how it turns out.

Try limiting to 2 stats to put your points into. Str for shapeshift dmg, mag to get 4 tier spells. That would also mean not favouring daggers and bows.

Could it be of any use to shapeshifting if you mixed it with arcane warrior? Just a thought, but maybe str will even get replaced by the magic stat for shapeshifts as well.

Could try Dex/Magic build, If the character is not to deal damage in the first place, Strenght is not needed and personally I'd be concered more with Defense. Shapeshift to Swarm with high Dex, say put Glyph of Warding on the floor first, is said to be almost unhittable. Even then Shapeshift will probably be quite situational so .. yeah, RP, go for it!

Not arcane warrior with shapeshifter - that's the worst possible combination imo. If you want to try to rp a shapeshifter then I think you've chosen the right way to go about it.
I'd probably go for strength and magic, and leave dex alone, but not having actually tried it that might be a poor choice. The proof is in the pudding. Let us know how you go.
Are you going weapon/shield?

Hmm i think shapeshifter is just too unique. Either you are a ss or you're not. Meaning a ss cant spell cast, and a mage cant directly utilize the tank/dps potential from ss. I just cant find any talent/spell synergy between a mage and a ss. That being said, acrane can be viable purely based on the bonus atk stats it offers to a ss on choosing the acrane spec.
