I read the wiki but I just can't seem to do it: jack an Atlas. I tried on Surkesh. I tried at Grissom. No joy. My next opportunity will be during the coup. There has got to be some way to do this!

Um, did you try doing it on Tuchanka Bomb mission?
The Atlas drops in and you should have high-power weapons available at that point. You need a really strong weapon (Black Widow, Paladin are the best available at that point) but if you want to do it later, you can do it on Gellix using the Carnifex.
Don't let your allies do too much damage to the Atlas during combat (like, have them attack other enemies) and keep running somewhere to fire at the canopy. Don't use tech-attacks or biotics or anything, just use strong weapons.

The Surkesh and Grissom atlases don't actually let you get inside, they just explode.

So basically, I should give my team mates a nerfed weapon (like a Predator I for EDI, or a Raptor I for Garrus, or a Katana I for James) and switch them over to that once the Atlas shows up? Tuchanka bomb seems doable. What about the one on the Presidium?

I got into the atlas mech on Grissom and i OMLY used the normal fire on the opposing atlas. Not the missile attack. This was possible only on insanity as on lower difficulties the atlas explodes before the canopy breaks. Oh and be sure to fire at the canopy repeatedly.
When it breaks quickly get off the atlas mech and go to the mech you are trying to hijack. It took me about 6 7 tries before i got it.

On tuchanca the atlas mech is unhijackable

What is the point of the "heavy" gun? What is the mechanic at work here that makes a heavy gun better than a rapid fire weapon, like say a Valkyrie or Harrier?

IIRC I got that achievement during the Cerberus coup. Using an infiltrator with a sniper rifle, shot the glass out of the canopy then just went for it. Might have been luck though, I can't remember jacking too many mechs in my various playthroughs... half the time the mechs seem to blow up before the glass breaks.

I tried so many times to get the achievement and I kept failing until I managed to start hijacking after about 50 tries
but I was killed while I was hijacking and I didn't get the achievement
FRUSTRATION

I tried, but didn't get it either. It's like that insanity achievement on ME2. I don't have the attention span or medigel to survive that platform section on the Collector ship.

Yay!!! I did it!

Here's what I did:

I equipped the Executioner I Pistol (my heaviest single shot weapon) with no piercing mod or ammo, but with an extended barrel. I switched EDI over to a Predator I with no mods, and I had Garrus switch to a Raptor I with no mods. I dropped the difficulty down to hardcore hoping that would still be enough to keep the Atlas alive while I shot it without also dying repeatedly. I was expecting to have to try many, many times, so I made a save just before the part where you get the Atlas on the Presidium. But I managed the first time. I went into that store on the left side right after the drop down point. I went to the blown out window and took cover there. I used Garrus's and EDI's overload to get the shield down, then once it was down, started whacking the cockpit canopy with the Executioner. The thing walked right up to me, even tried to melee me. But there was cover between me and it and apparently it cannot melee through cover, and it could not just go around since I was protected on both sides. So I would pop out of cover and shoot, and duck back down to reload. I was surprised I was able to get it the first time. This would seem the perfect spot to get the achievement if you want it.

Glad we could help. Then again I think that pretty much all the atlas' up until that point are not hijackable. Except for the Tuchanka Bomb atlas.

I just rememmbered, ioannis. The tuchanka Atlas is definately hijackable. I remember because my Femshep Infiltrator did it and as a result got a really buggy ending cutscene with Victus and afterwards in the shuttle it sounded like silent-hill clockwork.

The trick is to steal the mech BEFORE you kill the rest of the troops. It's very much possible.

I had a lot of trouble with this one. I tend to get them down to less than a bar of armor before I can jack them. The trick is getting your followers to back off, and making sure you're only shooting the windshield. Also, don't go full automatic.

Oh, and remember to kill the pilot.

I got it with the Atlas on Eden Prime in From Ashes, so that's another one to try for anyone who's not yet done it and has the DLC. I can't remember what gun I used but it was probably still a fairly basic sniper rifle (might've even still been the Mantis at that point).

Athlas on Grissom.

Use a crusader or similar weapon with natural armor piercing...

OP, you went through an awful lot of extra trouble for what can easily be done with a sniper rifle.
