Very recently, it was posted in another thread that a review claimed to have contained the following censored statement:

"Defining moment: When you board the CENSORED and discover the CENSORED are actually the CENSORED"

This had me thinking - and bear in mind this is only a visual-textual observation with no solid evidence or backing - but I think the Collectors are a sort of assimilated race.  I want to point out the most obvious visual connection:

Collectors:

Does anyone spot the physical similarities to another race we know?  The torso, the protruding leg bone, the body shape, the toes, their movement, their widened upper body?

If there is a link, the statement above would read:"Defining moment: When you board the _Collector Ship_ and discover the _Collectors_ are actually the _Turians_."

At first, I thought if they are, it could be suits that they're wearing.  But after seeing the human being "dissolved in acid" and their employment of husks, assimilation quickly came to mind.

This would be thematic; Reaper technology has been shown to assimilate human beings into husks, but no other race.  Could the Collectors be able to assimilate turians?  Likewise, the head Collector very much resembles a Keeper, albeit genetically modified/assimilated.  This would explain research into other races, as they are trying to broaden their assimilation to other species and technology (such as husks and the reapers themselves.

I doubt Bioware would say they are a new species if they were just the Turians dressed up.

I apologize for the formatting - my computer isn't getting along with the forums. But I'd like to add that the actual Collectors themselves could be those small bugs we see in the trailers that paralyze their victims or are something more miniscule. But those we fight could actually be assimilated turians.

Not dressed up.  Assimilated.  Transformed.

I think you're right about the first two censored, but I have no idea what the third is
Although, the second censored might be husks

It could even be that the Reapers are husks as posited by others on this forum several months back.  It's tough explaining the motivations of the Collectors in that case, though.

Well I vaguely recall a developer saying that the Collectors were actually the flying insects and the bigger ones were more like body guards.

This theory is entirely plausable.

Here's an idea: since they're insectoid creatures that have a special warrior class bred to be humanoid, maybe the purpose of the kidnapped humans is actually function as sort of host bodies for this warrior class - a kind of organic framework for their body to grow around with the aid of some sophisticated biotechnology?

Well, just rambling. Anything is possible at this point.

I think this is a posibility. Basically the Reapers are like Borg Queens, and then the husks are humans that were assimilated, and the collectors are Turians that were assimilated.

... I hope it's not though. I'm hoping for something a little more original.

One of the theories that's been bouncing around my mind is that the collectors are actually Protheans. Another group like those on Ilos that somehow survived the last purge and all this time they've been conducting experiments and research to find a way to stop the Reapers at any cost. even if the cost is abducting and experimenting on millions of unwilling sentient beings.
