So Japan being drowned in stagnant RPG's, I would think that they might embrace Mass Effect with it's innovations. Is it being sold over there? Is it in English or localized?

Are you buying it in Japan or something?

Japan likes their style of rpgs, they don't value choice as highly as Westerners.

It's a cultural thing.

Plus the main characters of Mass Effect are not effeminate enough for them.

Probably localized, if they release it over there (dunno). I am not sure about the success but i think it would do rather well, i take WoW as a example here, it's rather well conceived in Asia.

True I still don't think it would do as well as a domestic Japanese RPG.

Just give those Japs the same cliched story with the same archetypal characters and they'll gobble it up. They can't appreciate the genius that BioWare and other companies pour into WRPGs.

Premise of 99% of JRPGs.

You're a boy (maybe, it's hard to tell) in a small town and you soon have to leave because you have powers and are chosen somehow, or your friend in said small town is chosen, and you inexplicably tear up the surrounded biosphere to work out your strength in order to kill another locality's biosphere. Soon you get swept up in some grand plot where evil is trying to take over the world. Many boss fights ensue, you cause mass extinction of creatures wherever you go, more boss fights, forgettable small towns, blah blah blah, final boss fight, happy ending.

You forgot about the pink clad young female lead who is scared to love, and the main hero who is oblivious of her intentions.

Ok. I live in Shizuoka, Japan. I think the game is translated but not dubbed. (I don't know well for myself since I brought the first one with myself from my home country and I'm importing the second one). About the sales, well, the sales are just so-so, I can't tell you about this game specifically, but I believe they are the same as the rest of the youge (western games), Japanese gamers are heavily prejudiced against western games.

The first ME didn't exactly sell out, and not many units were shipped, or at least I didn't see that many in retailers.

Japanese market is probably not open to something like ME. Much like I've never had any interest in any JRPG, and have found the few I've tried (Final Fantasy X, etc) to be very boring.

I think the only JRPG I've ever enjoyed have been Dragon Warrior(Hunter?) and Pokemon on the gameboy systems.

I am enjoying Valkyria Chronicles but it is not strictly an RPG.

"Those Japs" is an expression with heavily racist connotations, at least for many Japanese people (several of which are part of my family), so I just wanted to inform you in case you didn't know of this, because I find it somehow offensive myself.

Please, don't regard Japanese people as idiots and gather a little bit of information.

Good Western things fare well in Eastern countries despite the difference in culture. Mass Effect had an excellent debut in Japan and ranked among the top 3 selling games of 2007.

I enjoy a good JRPG every now and then. I think the Japanese tell a pretty good story, even if it can be rigid and formulaic at times.

This surprises me but good to hear, do you have a link to this?  I still think they have a bias against Western games though.

From what I read of customer reviews of the game on sites like Amazon Japan, most customers were perturbed about the length of time it took to localize Mass Effect. I think it came out in late '08 or early '09 there. Compare that to its original '06 release on the 360.

Bioware games are popular with a certain crowd, based on what I've gleaned from Japanese message board discussions about DA:O, and some certainly know their Bioware game history, but it's definitely not mainstream in Japan. It would probably intrigue some people, but that's only if they look past its perceived gameplay style. I would say that it's the same gripe that some die-hard RPG fans have about ME being a shooter rather than an RPG. Personally, I see ME as an RPG without swords.

It's actually bigotist, not racist, at least in this context. I know, I know, it doesn't matter. That's just a pet peeve of mine.

hahaha japan sounds so bad
makes me not wanna visit my family there even more.
Still have horrible memories of my japanese grandmom forcing me to bathe with her...i was so young...and her hairbrush or something really hurt my hair.
Must say that if you paid them to play it Bioware could work its magic and hook them.
Also i am half japanese and i do not find ****** very offensive...

Well, you're right. The fact is, English not being my main language and me not using it too often, I couldn't find the right word.

I found this site which compared to the other markets shows Japan to be pretty niche.

Well, there are fascist, gun-wielding Bible bashers in the US, but it's still obvious that not everyone in there is like that. Plus, I suppose you're not living in Japan and you're not aware of their actual way of thinking. It's vey, very different than that. Just my 2 cents.

Considering slow sales of the Xbox in Japan this is actually a pretty strong showing.

It's fairly interesting how different JRPGs are compared to western RPGs, especially considering both genres more or less originated (or at least became "mainstream") through Ultima.
