It's fairly interesting how different JRPGs are compared to western RPGs, especially considering both genres more or less originated (or at least became "mainstream") through Ultima.

Much of it has to do with how we see our heroes and how Japanese envision theirs.

A strong influence is the prevalence of anime as well in their society and it's acceptance as an adult medium.

There is also something to be said of cultural sensibilities and standards.
