Ferelden IS pretty crap.

Orlais I think will need a whole new system to function, whereas I can see reforms bringing Tevinter into a better state of being with out throwing the baby out with the bath water.

Orlais is just typical Medieval country but Tevinter is land of slavery and crazy magisters.

Considering that you have never seen either countries properly, how would you know what most of it is like?

@Br3ad: Now now, you're going to critique him/her for using headcanon when these boards are filthy with it?

A massive portion of the arguments made on these forums are headcanon.

It's not like this is the only person I've said this to.

Maybe Fenris was just unlucky and happened to get the only two magisters who are crazy and evil in the whole country(well them and their friends who apparently were entertained by the blood magic slaughter of a little boy) aside from the original magisters who sacrificed a thousand slaves to fuel their blood magic ritual that would allow them to snatch heaven away from the maker but that ended up being corrupted by their own evil and unleashed the blight on the world...but I'm sure the rest of the magisters are nothing like all the ones we've heard of and are all decent and kind citizens who would never keep slaves or commit atrocities!

As for the slavery, the Tevinter slavers in DA:O, the ship of slaves isabella freed, and all the random slavers encountered in DA2 probably served Danarius and Hadriana only! They must have been illegally keeping slaves since there is no way Tevinter is a slaver nation, Fenris is a dirty liar and everyone in Tevinter is equal right? Right?

It's worth mentioning that Leliana still seems to think that Orlais is a pretty decent place, even after having experienced some of it's darkside. She does have little bit of a biased perspective but I think it's a good indicator there is a fair amount of redeeming qualities to the country.

@Jedi Master of Orion: While I don't know what Orlais is "really" like - once again, we have people who condemn an entire state for the story of a rape.

All the chevaliers are evil because of this incident of rape.

Which - ultimately, means these people should hate American soldiers(and likely soldiers of every modern nation), knights, samurai - etc. etc. etc. Since they all have examples of rape which were glossed over. Cops, firemen, priests, etc. etc.

I could find a story where all of these organizations have ignored the indiscretions of their fellows to "protect their own".

I'm sure that a mage rapist would have been pushed to it by Templar oppression though.

===

Slavery and Blood Sacrifice are policy in Tevinter.

Bolded 1. I would never say that.
Bolded 2. Not always. Blood magic is illegal, even though quite a few still practice it. And Maevaris didn't seem to be a blood mage or into slavery, just as an example of a good Magister.

Its been pretty well established that tevinter is a horrible place due to the character interactions , also anyplace that has slavery is a **** hole.It could have great health care but slavery makes any country evil

@eluvianix: You, sir (or madam?), certainly do not come to mind when I say things like "Bolded 1"

And, you have educated me on Bolded 2. I truly was not aware that Blood magic (and by extension I suppose sacrifices) are officially illegal in Tevinter. That's a very interesting, and welcome, development for the mage kratocracy.

Slavery is policy as far as I'm aware.

Blood magic is definitely illegal, it's just that no one pays attention to that rule. Lambert even said that the current Black Divine (who was also his good friend) turned to blood magic to keep his position.
And yes, slavery is entirely legal, especially since it is so integral to their economy. The last time an Archon tried to eliminate slavery, he didn't make it 2 days before he was assassinated.

And yes, I am a he.^_^

Well, oranges are obviously inferior to apples. But then again orange juice is gosh darn better than apple juice. Though I have never heard of orange pie, though even if I did, I would still prefer apple pie.

(This post was an effort to show just how useless topics like these are)

@Medhia Nox:
I have done you a disservice. I was wrong about Maevaris. She does indeed own slaves. Heck, even on the Wiki's Slavery page, she is listed as owning them.

So pretty much every nation of ancient times that created the foundations of the modern world was evil? Since you know they all permitted slavery, hell Rome ran on slave labor. Not to mention that medieval peasants were slaves in all but name.

Slavery is only thought of as a horrible thing in our day and age, because of our vaunted idea of "implied freedom", and the relative constant peace we enjoy. But we do love ourselves some Macintosh products which are basically ALL built on slave labor, yet you don't see many ever rise up in anger and overthrow the oppression, since that would be inconvenient.

Tevinter has slavery(and this slavers running around Thedas), blood magic,blood sacrifice, an ancient history of invading foreign soil, and to top it off out of control mages running the show.

On the other hand Orlais has masked slavery(both in the form of 'servants' and feudal peasants), an unhealthy amount of rape directed at the general populace, a modern history of invading foreign soil, a corrupt chantry in their pocket(and thus the whole oppression of mages thing on their shoulders), and to top it off corrupt and out of control nobles running the show.

I'd say they're both pretty awful, but the biggest douche award goes to Orlais since you know they're still super powerful and throwing their weight around. That's just my .02 cents.

.02 cents? Not really pulling your weight are you?
