Despite what Fenris said I would rather be an Elf in Tevinter because there is at least some small chance for upwards mobility in the evil Magetocrocy that in the evil French Monarchists. His sister was Danaris' understudy so she would have been a Magister at some point.

I'd rather be an elf in Orlais vs. Trevinter any day of the week.

What is the definition of "worst" here? Worst place to live if you are an extraordinarily powerful mage? Probably Orlais. Worst place to live if you are anything but an extraordinarily powerful mage? Definately Tevinter.

Anywhere where filthy elves aren't either thrown into slavery with their knife-eared harlot women or drawn and quartered for the sake of public amusement.

Orlais seems to me to be a typical medieval feudal society where the nobility are raised in excessive luxury to believe they have a divine right to treat anyone below them in the hierarchy as property to be used or abused at their leisure, in addition to having learned through their youth that whenever they do something wrong, daddy will come and bribe the local law enforcement.

And Tevinter appears to be an empire where someone needs to be a powerful mage to gain real authority or be in a powerful mage's immediate family. And if they don't want to fall behind the others and get replaced, they'll have to resort to blood magic and with the law in the palm of their hands they can grab any slave they want, strap them to a table and bleed them out to fuel their magic. Yeah, honestly, Tevinter just seems a whole lot more repulsive.

I don't condone rape or any form of physical or emotional abuse that we know the chevaliérs inflict upon the peasants they are supposed to protect, but the fact that the people who gut other people to further their own political ambitions are the ones with influence in the empire just puts Tevinter up on the top of the list for me.

True. It seems to me that Orlais, for whatever its faults, cannot compare to Tevinter's villainy. Orlais= ordinary villainy. Tevinter= supervillainy.

I kind of like French Toast. Does Orlais have the equivalent?

Legal slavery vs legal rape, hard call which I find less appalling.

Well, slavery usually includes rape. So, Tevinter has a 2 for 1 deal.

Tevinter has slavery(and this slavers running around Thedas), blood magic, blood sacrifice, an ancient history of invading foreign soil, and to top it off out of control mages running the show.

On the other hand Orlais has masked slavery(both in the form of 'servants' and feudal peasants), an unhealthy amount of rape directed at the general populace, a modern history of invading foreign soil, a corrupt chantry in their pocket(and thus the whole oppression of mages thing on their shoulders), and to top it off corrupt and out of control nobles running the show.

I'd say they're both pretty awful, but the biggest douche award goes to Orlais since you know they're still super powerful and throwing their weight around. That's just my .02 cents.

I'm genuinely baffled by people who seem to think that Tevinter is less rapey towards it's lower classes than Orlais. If anything it should be more, considering how much more power the Magisters have and how much more of the population is disenfranchised.

Actually, I don't think we should equate all chevaliers with one brush otherwise it means that we should equate all Ferelden nobles with Arl Vaughan Kendells.

Silly question but have we ever actually interacted with a chevalier? I think the closest interaction we have is Aveline's father and by all accounts, he was a good man.

While Orlais has it's share of corruption and horrible practices they don't have slavery so that puts them head and shoulders above Tevinter in my humble opinion.

Slavery in Tevinter is by far more widespread than in Orlais. And the "servants" in Orlais tend to be much better off than the slaves in Tevinter. Tevinter has such a huge population of slaves that there are slave rebellions "all the time" according to Fenris and the Imperium would collapse without slave labour.

Depends.

If I have strong magical talent, I would go to Tevinter..Even if I am an elf.

If not, Orlais.

Well, the peasants in Orlais don't have to worry about the local lord/magister sacrificing their lives to fuel blood magic spells, so I'm gonna say Tevinter is worse.

Are any of these two countries that much worse than Fereldan? The Fereldan's kept slaves. The Fereldan's had nobles that loved raping and oppressing as much as any chevalier(which we haven't actually met.)

Two of the main antagonists are an over-patriotic war veteran that that sold people to Tevinters and betrayed his king because of some back closet fear he had of the Orlesians. Another was a noble war hero who killed of a befriended family just for a little more power, and tortured people every morning like it was part of a complete breakfast. Yet somehow, we're here having a poll over Orlais and Tevinter; two countries we haven't been to, when Fereldan has just as much a bad track record with more tangible examples.

Just saying.

There is no good place to live in Thedas.

Though Orlais is preferable to the place where slaves are blood sacrificed to enhance a magistrates power.
