'Effective' isn't a good enough goal.
Graphics make things better.
Visual part is very important. It makes the characters and the world alive.

Books have high dynamic lighting tbh. And the print has superior anti-aliasing compared to games.Steelcan wrote...
Care to explain why books are such effective methods of conveying stories then?David7204 wrote...

They don't have graphics but they are undeniably a more effective medium

It's something I would expect to see a 5 year old grasp perfectly well.
Have I overestimated the BSN to this degree?
I really hope I do not have to explain the childishly simple foolishness in trying to prove that nice graphics aren't a good thing by offering an example of a good game with lousy graphics.

Ryse has some of the best graphics ever, it's also a very crappy game. It proves your notion wrong because good graphics never makes a game, it just makes it look pretty.David7204 wrote...

graphics are icing, they may make things look nicer, but stories work just fine without themDavid7204 wrote...

To be fair there are some stories that work much better through visual storytelling, and wouldn't work in book format, the same way there are stories that work far better as books than movies, games or television shows.

It could also be said that no matter how good a games story and gameplay is, if the graphics are absolutely awful, distractiing and hurt your eyes then it will be an awful game.

Bullcrap, I still enjoy playing NES games.
I'm not talking awful as in old or outdated- I'm talking awful as in awful. Neon flashing lights that change colour constantly, ridiculous body proportions, texture bugs that ossilate and hurt your eyes. Animations that constantly bug out and look ridiculous. Enemies that are just large blotchy cubes even though they are supposed to represent Dragons.
It would be an awful game, no matter how good everything else was.

Graphics matter. However, good graphics do not necessarily make a good game and bad graphics do not necessarily make a bad game. For the utterly simple and obvious reason that there are elements to games besides graphics.
House, your silly insistence that I think graphics 'make' a game by themselves is nothing more than a ridiculous, childish delusion with absolutely nothing whatsoever to back it up. It really is incredibly tedious to argue with you.

Ryse has awful gameplay and a bad story from what I've heard though, while my example only had absolutely dire graphics. what if it was just Ryse's story that was awful and the gameplay was as excellent as the visuals? Or the story and graphics were excellent and the gameplay was awful?

It's how the first part of this post is exactly what everyone has been telling since you first started this argument awhile back
While the rest is just a personal attack towards House

Pretty much, what people ARE saying is graphics should not be the full focus. Which is how it should be. If you focus just on graphics, then you simply get a Ryse which is the best example of a game with amazing graphics and horrible gameplay.eluvianix wrote...
