Visual part is very important. It makes the characters and the world alive.

Good question. And imagine, that instead of creating those excess things, devs could spend more time to improve main plot and the characters...

What you seem to be arguing is they not only strip out those side missions but also strip out all the options in how to develop the charcter in the main story for some shiny things. Take out what brings people to the BIoWare label for some MoCap and shiny graphics.

Sacrifice depth for superficial bs.

How many side quests were really needed in DAO or Mass Effect? There could have been some that could expand on events outside the main plot like the Grisson Academy: Rescue mission or the Infiltrate the Geth Consensus mission but there were also unneeded ones like the mineral excavation side-quest in Mass Effect or helping that Salarian in Omega pick up packages in Mass Effect 2.

...When I remember Mako and side missions from ME1, I can think only about the lost opportunities to make the story much better.

And if they constantly make the story bigger than it should be it's gonna drag out to the point where nobody cares about it anymore

Example: Knack

Then is it even roleplay if its so restricted, predetermined and linear? I understand everyone has there own barometer when it comes to such things but then it can be so far to one side its not even a question.

If we are going to get technical then Doom allows me to roleplay by choosing what weapon I am using or path im going down.

Well that's just it, one could argue that just about every game with a named protaganist allows you the roleplay because you assume the role of that character, really anything from doom to pacman would qualify. However RPGs promise the experiance of being about to craft your own character to a certain extent so I'm inclined disagree with that prespective when talking about games like dragon age.

Let's put it this way Beyond has a few Rpgesque elements but it's a far cry from actually being an RPG.

Mass Effect 1 had the best story of the three and it had the Mako. Mass Effects 2 and 3 had worse stories and didn't feature the Mako.

Therefore, the Mako is Mass Effect.

You lose, Seival.

Perhaps the "firepower " should go towards a graphical and operational overhaul of the Mako in MEWhatever.

Wise developers also create and develop games the way they want to regardless of what is happening in relation to outside influences. If this was the case - I doubt we would see as many indie (and amazing) as we do because of "evolving" with the times.

Where´s your avatar picture from?

And thankfully Seival has changed his/hers...

But as you say, many of the more varied games are indie, as they don´t have that film studio mentality big ones have/ is imposed from above. The trend towards simplification has been quite obvious this last decade, trying to get as many players as possible by making games more and more generic.

Anyway, on topic, visuals is IMHO more about aesthetics (sp?) than graphic quality. Give me Morrowind over DA2 any day (also congrats to BW for making even uglier elves than Bethesda, didn´t think it possible).

When I said if some side quests were necessary I was talking about the kind like collect minerals or packages for money and exp. The Geth Consencus mission is technically a side quest and it was pretty cool. Get rid of the dumb "take this pendant to the grieving widow" but keep the cool ones like "kill this dragon so Wade can make an awesome sword."

To my mind, the first Mass Effect is the ONLY Mass Effect. It's certainly the only one that makes a lick of sense in the narrative.

Really?... But somehow, I like roleplaying Jodie much more than roleplaying Shepard.

What meaningful decisions did you make for Jodie?  Did you have any control over Jodie's motives or feelings at any point during the game?

Shiny graphics are nice, but getting rid of story and character elements just for the sake of accomodating graphics and mo-capping? Нет, товарищ.

I wasn't making a point on which one was better, all of them are B-rate games with a C-rate protagonist at best. I commented on which had the better story. Which was ME2, becasue at least it didn't pretend to have one.

ME1 was the only with a decent story at all (in the sense I wasn´t noticing plot holes immediately as I was playing). ME2 main plot was more of a below average sidequest, and ME3´s makes as much sense as Prometheus.

Ok, stop right there. ME2 was the best of all three.

I still wish Bioware had scrapped the Mako, if it would have meant some halfway decent side quests.

With Mass Effect, it felt like Bioware borrowed all the wrong elements from Baldur's Gate 1.
