Well your Mage Hawke can be one.

Other than that, no.

A non-mage Hawke might have been able to recruit Bethany to replace him (depending on story choice, of course), but it's Carver instead for a Mage Hawke.

Honestly, you don't really need Anders in the finale. Just stock lots of potions and Mythal's Favor to resurrect downed characters as needed.

does anyone besides me have trouble finding companion bodies in the middle of combat so a MF can be thrown down?

I always kill him. I don't miss his healing at all. Either I play a mage myself (and do a better job healing) or I have Bethany who does just fine.

One game my Hawke told him take a hike after speaking to him following his second act quest, so I didn't use him for nearly that entire game.  Never missed him.

Well, I have to pause the action and look around me. But generally I don't have any issue.

Nope, if your Hawke is a mage then Anders is the only ally who can heal.

The final part of the game isn't that difficult, you could do without his healing. Don't fret on killing him if you want to.
