Don't dis the Sten. Or Dog either. If you are having troubles with either of these fantastic characters, spend some time looking around the forums. Neither plays well if you just slap whatever gear you find on them and leave them to the tender mercies of the AI. Put some thought into stating and gearing, along with some sensible tactics and you will find they are monsters on the battlefeild.

Try spending some points on dexterity and constitution. If he can't dodge anything and has no physical resiliance, of course he's going to die. It's not all about the strength. If he's dying, it's because you made him that way.

I never use Sten as a tank (though you can if you want to) - he's straight dps. I get his willpower up to 20, and pump all else into strength. Forget dex & constitution if he's not a tank. Don't give him more than heavy armour (in massive he'll steal aggro from your tank). He'll be weak until around level 12, then he'll be unstoppable. Indomitable, plus the 2 sunders, 2 handed swing - brilliant.

Sten is a good "shock trooper", like any proper and decent 2H warrior, of course he's not a tank. Funny, but I've used him more like I would use a rogue than a warrior (as in, get him to hack and enemy's back). Vashadin.

I really liked Sten, I used him as my main dps until I got Ohgren, but that was only so I could test him out.

Sten is one of my favorite characters, he has great character development and conversation and dialogue options with the other companions.

And he likes cookies.

Hmm, methinks I smell a troll here. At any rate, he did a fine enough job when I did use him and got him decent gear. If you fail to earn Sten's respect, I'm afraid that that's your problem and no defect on his part.

I love Sten. You can learn more about him but the way to get to his information is different. You have to listen for him to make comments as you travel around and then ask him about his comments. I took to taking him around with me and I was amazed at the depth to his character, before that I just thought he was a hulking brute that didn't have anything important to say. He does tend to die at time quicker than Alistair does but the way I avoid the companions dying is to change one of there strategies to healing themselves once they get to 50% health. He uses a great sword usually the balanced until I get him his sword back.

Agreed. He had the most interesting dialogues by far. It was very hard to read him and you had to think about what you said to him if you wanted him to like you at all. It's quite gratifying when he finally starts to warm up to you. I also like his sword quest, nothing better than a sword that has some story behind it. Sadly I decided to replace him with Oghren eventually mostly because I felt if we were going to search for his wife he might as well come along.

I never saw a problem with him in combat. He killed a lot, did big damage. If you get his sword early enough it can be a huge help. I believe it did around 4 points more damage than anything else I had seen around the time I got it. The OP must have problems with aggro management.

Also, if he goes along to rescue you from Fort Drakon he has a wonderful, yet rare moment of subtle hilarity.

The other party members are all better than him but I don't think he is the worst in HISTORY. I like this character alot. It's nothing personal, he adds a lot to the camp and looks badass in the armors.

In my current Rogue playthrough, Sten is my tank. Or rather 'tank'. I'm using a Duellist/Assassin, Leiliana as a Bard/Assassin, and Dog. It's a problematic setup in full-on boss fights (nothing a few poultices can't handle) but most trash spends its time stunned, knocked down, buried under Dog, or plain dead. Fun times

Once Sten got that two handed sweep, I was in love with the big lug. Nice RP moments too: he's slow to warm up, but earning his respect felt fairly good.

I Sten. He's not my fave warrior to take with me but then again, I'm not so fond of 2H warriors. I much prefer a tank and a DW. I could probably stand to take a look at better ways to spec 'em 'cause I can't seem to figure it out on my own like I have with all the other classes/specializations.



Anyway, I love earning his respect and having him call me Kadan. I want to buy him cookies.

He is the only one who truly respects you. Just that his respect means something as it has to be earned.
