I like Sten, although it takes time and patience to develop him. He warms up slowly, but once he does, he is very respectful. I like that the PC won't get away with the obvious 'nice' answers that most companion NPCs seem to need.

I usually respec him. Yes, it's a mod, but I feel it should've been my choice anyway, because only I know how my PC will use her/his companions in my game. I also have my own opinions how 2h, DW, or whathaveyou should be spec'd.

Yes, Zevran and Leliana are the other two I feel are build wrong, so I'll correct that. I don't need a bow specialist - ever, so Leliana will become DW.

Zevran is supposed to be an assassin. An assassin without lock-pick skills? What? What does he do when his contract locks her/hisself in? Politely ring the bell? And such low cunning. In an assassin. No thank you, I'll fix that for you ;)

All in all, it depends on the player how they develop the fighting aspects. If Sten (or any of the melee fighers) don't perform up to the player's standard, then the player is doing something wrong, not the pixel person.

HE DIES IN LIKE 4 HITS..AND CAN EVEN HANDLE A PACK OF WOLVES

Turn off powerful swing & turn on indomitable. He lasts longer because he no longer sacrifices defense for damage. He is still pretty weak against archers unless you raise his dex.

You babble and shout when you are serious? If Sten was serious, you'd be bleeding.

You said you use Sten to fight. That should be the issue. Let Sten himself to fight, surely he fights better than you.

HE DIES IN LIKE 4 HITS.

No.

AND CAN EVEN HANDLE A PACK OF WOLVES

You complain because he's capable?
Irrelevant.

Use the tactics options to have your tank, Sten if he is your tank, use helth poultices when their helth drops below a certain %. After I did this, I haven't had any trouble staying alive.

I used him the entire game and he didn't fall in battle more than anybody else. I do agree he is probably the weakest choice among the fighters besides Dog.

That said, I found Sten and Oghren to be way too similar in gameplay, and in fact Oghren is so much a better character (personality-wise), that I never once had Sten in my active party (you don't even need him when doing HIS quest).

While it is debateable Oghren is better personality wise[snip]

Of course it boils down to personal preferences. I forgot to add "IMO" to my post, but I thought the "I found" bit made up for it. :)

Basically, I found Sten to be an arrogant c***, especially towards the person who gave him his only one chance to redempt himself (and that's the PC).

Haha, Sten is a straight up beast. Sten in my current game hits for over 75 at level 16 and when hasted its even higher. He kills everything. 2H Starfang and Blood Dragon Armor. Talk him up to get his plot bonus to strength. And Dog is good too. I just started to use these characters. If you build them right they are very strong characters.

I'm reminded of my encounters with the Broodmother. Which involve sending Sten in with indomitable to massacre her solo while my other companions stand on the rocks and mop up darkspawn/tentacles. Works like a charm.

I don't agree with You..the most usless companion in DA:O is a Dog, especially later in game, but still I like to have him with me.  Sten is OK, I like him very much and I havn't problems with him in my games ( well, maybe thanks to toolset and items ala Baldur's Gate I created Image IPB)

You are annoying. Reading your responses are like digging a fork into my ear.

Anyway...

I've never had a problem with him. Used him throughout the end of the game and he just massacred everyone with full juggernaut and ageless.

Editted for the truth, as has been said to you countless times in this post it isn't Sten's fault that you don't have a clue how to train him properly.

among the fighters available, he is the worst. he comes with low constitution, which makes him a pain to build up. he dies in a few shots because his health is low for a warrior. you can either spend time building him up, or just go with alistair or shale.

I get the feeling people who have trouble with STEN are the same people who played as rogues in WoW that kept getting aggro in those 5 hour long PUG wipe fests I used to subject myself to for reasons beyond my understanding. Hilarity I guess.

Oh, how glad I am I quit that racket.

Sten doesn't need constitution. I never give him any. Will to base 20, everything else into strength. He's slow to develop (all 2-handers are) but kicks ass and takes names if you set him up right by around level 12.

Heavy armour (not massive, because then he'll steal aggro from your tank). Indomitable, the two sunders, two handed swing. Brilliant. None of the other sustainables are worth a damn on him if you're going straight dps - and you don't want taunt or threaten either. Pommel strike and critical strike are also good, but the others are the bread and butter of the build. Oh, and never interrupt a 2-handers swings, you've gotta get your timing just right, if you're controlling them.

However, using him as an off tank requires different set-up and talents - I prefer him as straight dps myself.

Use him better. Turn off threat, give him a hammer and a good armor, he becomes a killer. Add haste and he's even more a killing machine.

u would think that a HUGE guy with a claymore wearing heavy armor would be strong and helpful but for some reason NO MATTER HOW HIGH HIS STATS ARE,NO MATTER HOW STRONG HIS ARMOR IS,AND NO MATTER HOW MANY BUFFS U GIVE HIM he ALWAYS falls in battle

What must enemies think about the player then? They always fail...

Oh, I am pretty sure a common human in real life falls with one sword slash. And... uh... have you ever tried fighting a wolf in real life? I don't want to be sound rude, but it's true. Don't yell at us for something we are not guilty?

Using Sten as a tank with sword and board in my rogue game, only because I haven't used him much and wanted to see the characters dialogue. Its working ok, not as effective as Alistar maybe but I'm doing fine.

My experience with Sten is that he utterly sucks at crowd control but he is epic against single powerful opponents for some reason. He can handle the high dragon but as you say not a pack of wolves. I don't know why that is. I don't take him with me much as his character is not compatible with mine. Al is my main tank and Dog and I usually split DPS stuff. I admit that him dying on me all the time is probably because I don't know how to level him (I just autolevel him usually.) Funny thing is, I also autolevel Oghren (In fact, I auto everybody except myself, Al, and Leliana, and a few tweaks to Zevran) and Oghren never dies on me despite having a skill set almost identical to Sten's. I give them extremely comparable equipment, stats, and tactics and Sten consistently dies on me while Oghren does not. Sten seems to get swarmed a lot. Maybe the poor guy just has rotten luck.

If it weren't for the fact that you have stated you haven't used him much and wanted to see his dialogue, I would've been tempted to scream "YOU TURNED HIM INTO WHAT?!?!" but as you did I'll just...er... well... *coughs*

ENJOY! :D
