My current party consists of Sten, Morigan, Shale and dual wielding rogue, on nightmare. Sten is probably the MVP of the team, doing damage second only to Morigan, and holding his own in the thickest of combat. You are playing the game wrong.

I'm on my second playthrough, and decided I didn't want allistair (or any sword and board) in my party this time...so I grabbed Sten as soon as I possibly could and started specializing him into duel-wield (berserker). It took a couple levels, but we are level 14 now, and he is a freaking monster.

I must say, I really like his character once I got him to open up...I really have to think about what I say to him.

Got a pretty evil party going with Sten, me as blood mage, morrigan and zeveran hehe.

I admit that him dying on me all the time is probably because I don't know how to level him (I just autolevel him usually.) Funny thing is, I also autolevel Oghren (In fact, I auto everybody except myself, Al, and Leliana, and a few tweaks to Zevran) and Oghren never dies on me despite having a skill set almost identical to Sten's. I give them extremely comparable equipment, stats, and tactics and Sten consistently dies on me while Oghren does not. Sten seems to get swarmed a lot. Maybe the poor guy just has rotten luck.

Auto-level? Auto-level is not your friend. I mean, it's your game and you can darn well play the way you want to, but to get the most out of your companions, try the various advice threads/pages on how to build up companions. Try it at least once, if you don't like it, you can always return to auto-level.

If you're on PC you can get a respecialization mod, and build them up from scratch. A feature that should've been included, but I hear it'll be included in 'Awakenings'.

The 'tactics' screen is your friend, so is outfitting them right. Don't let Sten draw (too much) aggro, turn the 'threaten' off. I think it's turned on as a default by the game. There are more things you can do, and granted, it takes time with Sten, but it's worth it imo.

Sten is awesome. You just have to realize that he is a soldier, and you should treat him as such. He has no intention of being your BFF like Alistair. Command him as a commander would their soldier, and you get quite a few approval points. Stick to the mission and don't take him on 'pointless' missions like searching for the Urn (from a RP perspective, the thing is pretty much an urban legend) and ask about the Qunari and their religion. He believes in enlightenment and doing your duty. Once you get to know him and actually earn his respect, it's a lot more worthwhile than Alistair who will like you no matter what.

I adore Sten, he has been a main companion since my second game. However, I do not build him for tanking, he is my main DPS and also manages crowd control to an extent. He only uses taunt if my tank is at <10% health. I dont think he suffers in any way for lack of a second specialisation anyway - even companions who have access to two don't always utitlise them.

As for being hard to know, yes he is at first, but since my second game he is always the first companion with 100% approval. A shame really as I miss him challenging my PCs leadership.

Yep probably, like I said, just taking him along for the plot and dialogue as I never have done before. This game is easy enough that one gimped char isn't going to cause too many problems. I plan on ditching him ones I feel I have exahusted all he's plot points and such.

That is unlikely to happen in one play through with one character. Since he has a great deal to say, in a considerable number of places, and some things change based on your origin, class, and gender.

This is my 2nd playthrough on nightmare, my team:

Alistair as tank

Wynne as healer

Sten as DD(damage dealer)

Me cun-archer-bard-duelist(don't like ranger spec)



After doing lothering and circle I added him to the party, and we have done: redclife, denerin quest, brecilian forest, and a lot of side quest and also the DLCs.



Sten wears heavy armor, and he only uses taunt when alistair is over surronded and near to die(i did manually this tactic), and after that, when alistair breathe a little, he uses taunt to get the agro again.



Sten rarely dies, he haven't buffs, besides song of courage and rally, on lvl 15 more or less is hitting near 100 and he has 90% accuracy.



STEN FTW!



pd: maybe he is that awesome because i use the combat tweaks mod.

You should take Sten on the Urn quest. You can earn a great deal of respect from Sten. He will challenge you for leadership. If you kick his butt and tell him to get back in line he respects you even more (+7 approval).

for the umpteenth time: a charcter is only as good as the equipment and spec'ing you put into them. Blame Yourself.



Personality-wise I think Sten is great- He's loaded with great wisdom, and respects you more when you step up and pull rank. Realmzmaster is right, when he challenges you and you beat him he just respects you even more.



He also provides some excellent foreshadowing about Morrigan. Invest some time in conversation with him and he'll tell you the Tale of the Bee and it's Stinger.

Disagree.  You should take Sten to the ashes if you haven't done his personal quest yet, and don't do persuade or intimidate checks -- just make it clear who's in charge.  You can firmly establish yourself as leader at that point.

Edit: Ok, someone else answered the same way already.  You also gain approval taking him to the gauntlet and learn some more about him.  Very good place to take Sten.

You should take Sten on the Urn quest. You can earn a great deal of respect from Sten. He will challenge you for leadership. If you kick his butt and tell him to get back in line he respects you even more (+7 approval).

Actually, if you have already found his sword and have his approval to +90, he won't even challenge you. He'll basically tell you that he thinks it may be a waste of time and that I be sure that I know what I'm doing. He even says he trusts you with his life but he's more worried about the mission. You get +6 for pretty saying anything as you'll be reaffirming you're the boss and you know what's best.

Do you have Wynne and if not then is he guzzling health poultices? Check you tactics page and ensure that he is using health pots.

Ensure also that you have a clear tank that can keep Sten from being steamrolled.

It isn't Sten it is all 2H if you ask me. The animations are terrible & 2H may do a lot of damage but they seem to rarely hit no matter what their Dex. is at. 2H class is just broken in game why go 2H for any reason in this game? dual wield, S&S, magic all have A LOT more probably triple DPS. Plus indomitable is the worst talent in game it only works against elites & lower to my knowledge which makes it entirely pointless considering most people with 20% physical resistance rarely get knocked down by anything aside from a spamming Ogre.

Sten is the only character I don't care for, he only answers questions with questions to pretend he is deep or something when he is just a dumb brute who murders people b/c he's a crap warrior who can't keep track of his own weapon. lqtm.

I only spent points on STR, cun for unloocking more tactic slot, and maybe some willpower. Equip with a greatsword and if u can, equip a Maul, its even better.

That way, i got 91% of accuracy, and he is the second after me PC at party contribution damage.

He was in a cage with little to eat or drink for ... 20 - 30 days.

I like the default Sten. I love my Starfang equipped powerhouse Sten. ~60 DMG per hit is nothing to sneeze at.

with the Great Chasin maul or something like that (gorin sells for 151g) is doing 80-100 each normal hit and 130 or more on criticals, and with skills better if we dont speak ;:DD

Sten has 60+ str and the maul strenght modifier is 1.25, so he gets a great advantage
