I took sten with me on my current playthrough, and i must say i like him.

If you give him some good cc and protect mage support, hes a walking destroyer.

And i realy was rofl ing when he challenged me in the urn quest.

when he went like, 'im taking over command' i was like WHAT?

Then when i had beaten him into the ground i got +6 aproval from him.

I also like his down to earth comments and dialogs a lot. Especialy those with leliane.

I haven't found a good link to how to level Sten up, myself (Search, even with Google, is not my friend), so any decent/good ideas?

This playthrough I tried something different, and made him sword and board, since whiny Alistair was getting on my nerves.
I put points in dex, const, str - (willpower every once in a while), and Sten is a very good defense man.  Play with his tactics a bit  since he is default specced for 2H.  I find he needs no more healing than Ali or Ohgren this way.  I try to keep his dex, con, and str all about equal.  He's a huge guy - he needs that dex  
Next playthrough I am going to tweak further (or use respec mod on this one) and just load him up with dex and the heck with putting points into con.  I did that with Zev, and the guy never gets hit, and he still has his default const from when I found him.
The fun thing about Sten (which is not his real name btw - it's a title - has anyone discovered his name yet?) is when you have him a very high approval, he'll start bantering a bit with you - which of course, is totally different from your other companions, but it's funny, nonetheless.
