As for Skyrim, eh. It is not the best ES game I've played, but with the right mods, it is definitely enjoyable.

Running the Requiem mod, a Realistic Needs mod and couple of other overhaul mods that changes things like Dragon Combat and attempts to fix the Civil War to make it longer and more dynamic/reactive.

So I guess there's that. And I just find it hard to boil with "purist cRPGer" rage nowadays, knowing that there is a mountain of incline coming in the next year or two.

Yea,  I'm sure there's mods out there that fix some of Bethesda's derp and make the games tolerable (like Nehrim for Oblivion for instance)

Can't give Bethesda credit for that though. (aside from making the tools available)

Ehh, at least they still make games though, I'll give them that.  As opposed to Bioware, where I don't know what the hell they're even making anymore.

And yea, the rage has subsided with Posted Image on the way.

pfft who needs combat mods when these babies are out

Still, why are you even using Skyrim to get waifus? Why not just play a romance sim?

She cooks. She cleans. She takes care of my children. And Lover's Comfort on demand. That's all I need in a waifu. And all you have to do is chop wood for them.

"It's a fine day with you around."

Damn right it is.

If Skyrim could mod in sex scenes and make waifus have better story plots that are more angsty, you could probably convince a significant portion of BioWare's fanbase to leave them.

Ha, at least with that game the lunatic fringe of perverts and psychopaths is off making mods you can ignore.

Oh oh I know!

Bethesda knows what they're good at, knows what works, and doesn't feel the need to get "high level" in a vidya game series that has been anything but.

Don't know, I personally dislike TES games, too much freedom which makes it chaotic and lack of voiced player character bothers me too much.

I never understood why the games were so popular, but looking at how many people also like GTAs, I guess it is just the freedom that many enjoy. For me in both cases it is one of the biggest factors why I am not a fan.

Exactly.

Not to mention that the Japanese site comrade Lazengan brought up apparently cracks down on the stuff he finds so 'shocking'. And the rest isn't even on front page, hence litte difficulty in ignoring that.

Then, there's this featured as well. Not exactly incompatible with the setting, is it. May end up using that when I set Skyrim up again on a new rig.

I've been trying to get my brother to play RPGs for years. His primary complaints have always been:

A). Too much talking

B). Too complicated game mechanics

That and he's generally uninterested in fantasy setting, but he loved playing games like Sleeping Dogs and Far Cry 3. Genre aside, I'd say the primary allure of Bethesda titles over, say, Bioware titles is the sandbox ability to simply run in and kill stuff with minimal dialogue. Its a matter of wanting to mess around and be awesome versus the desire to be immersed in a story and characters, not that the two are exclusive. Its a matter of priorities.

Wait... Seriously, that's what you're hating on? The towns?

Who the bleep cares that much about the towns?

I do, personally speaking. It's actually one of the things I dislike about Skyrim. That, and how impact is rather lackluster more often then not (something that I can't even think of a single game managing to do right).

Like I said earlier in the thread, I've got a serious love/hate relationship with the game. Skyrim's strength is in the graphical fidelity of the game and how you can roleplay, but the roleplay (to me) is meaningless if it only matters to me.

So while we're on the subject, what game did it well? If you list any DA game, I will laugh in your face, twice, after eating an onion sandwich with jalapenos, and Grey Poupon, because it just isn't true.

Alice: Madness Returns and Assassin's Creed 2. The cities in AC2 had a life to them that I wish other game developers would take into consideration.

Just cause 2 did a good job with towns. Skyrim's towns felt so dead the biggest trade center had like 12 people.

I still say RAGE towns were really well done. People were reactionary, moved around, and their character models were really well done. Still on the sparse side, numbers-wise, but I liked them. And I'd agree with AC2 towns. I forgot about JC2 towns; might have to revisit that.

I wasn't defending Skyrim's sparse towns, as I agree that they are sparse. But that's not enough to ruin the game for me. If there's anything to nitpick, I'm surprised that would be the thing.

"It's just your opinion" is  applicable when you want it to be and it doesn't apply when "it's different" which is subject to change at any time. This is Man child logic

Whiterun has 80 NPCs, including the Companions and those in the farms who do come in to the city.

The Imperial City in TES IV had about 200 NPCs, but it was loading screen- loading screen- loading screen- loading screen.  I'll take Skyrim's "empty" towns anyday, since we're always going to be limited by consoles.

80 really? I never noticed that many. But i guess there is the characters that only stay in buildings like some of the shop keepers and the companions.

IMO I think they're so successful because of the stories. I have yet to find a Bethesda game I don't like

Cop out, eh. Load one of those big mods like Warzones and watch your frame rates plummet.  And that is on PC.

Of course, you could have a bunch of NPCs who just stand around as window dressing, aren't interactable and just stare straight ahead or pace mindlessly- like most games.

IMO, it's an issue with the game engine Bethesda has been using. Hitman Absolution does some fanastic work with regards to large amount of NPCs in a level that feels alive. Granted, you aren't able to talk to them all but there are scripted events, conversations and general behaviour patterns that is pretty impressive considering the amount of NPCs on screen. The sheer density of the crowd celebrating Chinese New Year, for example. That is impressive.
