With the way backstab works in DA II, I don't quite understand...

If you don't get automatic backstabs from behind, like in Origins, then what is the advantage of being a rogue?  This is my first DA 2 rogue, and so far it seems more like an inferior version of a warrior while you're waiting on the cooldown for backstab.  And is there a talent similar to Coup de Grace from Origins? (copied and pasted description below)

When a target is incapacitated, the opportunistic rogue strikes where
it hurts the most, inflicting automatic backstabs against stunned or
paralyzed targets.

The advantage of being a Rogue is picking locks and traps. Same as the first game.

Follow Arelexx guide for nightmare rogue for your first time playing as one and then you will understand the benefits of the rogue in da2. You can watch his videos but there's nothing like actually accomplishing those feats for yourself.

It's not just backstab.  it's insane critical damage and when you level up right auto critical hits on every attack and talent.  it's being a disorienting machine.  it's being able to wade into the thick of enemies while obscured and not getting hit even once while you destroy everything around you faster than a warrior can do normally.

it's about an enemy assassin backstabbing a party member to near death, making him brittle with a mage, hexing him with hex of torment, marking him with mark of doom, then using the assassinate talent to perform a CCC that does close to 50k points of damage instantly killing him on nightmare difficulty and saying "yeah suck on that you enemy rogue pos!"

But if you must be so obsessed with the backstab mechanic from origins it has been reworked into the passive talent in the Scoundrel tree called Blindside which basically nets you extra damage for attacking enemies that are engaging other party members but instead of having to get behind them it can be from any angle

I have only played on nightmare once but for lesser difficulty levels I like to use backstab to pop into a group of low level foes and then use the rogue's speed to polish many of them off before the warrior even gets there. Then, while the rest of the party is mopping up I'm off scouting for threats to the back-hanging party members. This works really well on those enemies that mysteriously spawn from behind but has got me in trouble if I get too far separated from the group.

Plus the overpowered critical strikes they later unlock.

Just wait until you set up a 50k damage Brittle, Hex, Mark of Doom, Assassinate CCC. .......
