Thanks gents. I have the gmax and plug in so I shall play over the Christams holidays I will also use Mr Shaes tutorials. In turth I have been reading his words and taking his advice since I started down this road.

Santa may have bought me a PC tablet too so it's going to be a good Chritmas break for me.

The wife may not see me for a week but a change is a good a rest I think they say :D

I've got a fix for the MDL texture import problem in the works, but I was going to fix another issue and work on an enhancement over the break before posting an update. So it'd be better to go the Gmax route.

For your viewing amusement, here is one component of the entrance to the underground dwarven hold.

Image IPB

Because of camera problems I split it into two parts. This is one of the two identical towers that will flank the grand entrance. When I get the latter finished up, I hope to show the completed gate. There's a dwarf on the battlements for scale. It looks better in the game, but it's hard to see the top because of the size.

I'm having second thought about the fancy sides on the dome pedestal, so I might redo that. The dome is intentionally non-sperical; I was trying to make it gem-like.

Very nice, I find it amusing that we do not only have to be modders but dwarven design consultants too.

I really like the texturing, it seems very well done to my untrained eye. I especially like what appears to be the blackening of the stone towards the top of the buttresses. I am looking forward to seeing the whole gate.

PJ

PS - Is it just me or does any one else have a colour wheel to hand when they are building interiors too?

Maybe if you flatten the top of the dome, like a cut diamond, it'll be clearer that it's an intentional gem-cut. I assumed it was a smoothing issue until I read your description.

Yeah, I'm not completely happy with the dome. I reworked it into more of a spherical shape, gave it a stronger specular component, and put a chimney/skylight in the middle. It'll have to do. Shrug.

That looks better. And thanks for making some non-human architecture.

That's a really nice tower. What'll the gate look like ?

I like the way you have managed to pin an elf to the front of it.

Is that dwarven decorating?

I'm a little surprised that there's not that much for the dwarves. The elves seem to have some and there's even a few for the gnomes and halflings.

Still working on the details, but I wanted it to be large and daunting enough to appear intimidating to an invader.

Given that this is a dwarven gate large, and daunting is about 4'6".

In custom content?  I can think of one halfling house, and for dark elves there's the drow set, but can't think of any gnomish or non-dark-elven architecture offhand.  Do you recall the names, or have some links?  Some of that would be useful to me.

The ones I saw were in the NWN hakpacks/models on the NWN2 Vault web site, so unfortunately you'd have to do a port.

Well I'm off to the family X-mas get together now. Stay warm everybody!

Still very much a WiP, but this shows where I'm heading. The gothic archway has a gap for a massive door I've yet to build. After texturing the archway and doing some decorating, I plan to add a gate room on top and perhaps a platform for ballistas. Any suggestions?

This platform sounds like a good idea, especially if the mesh is there so that we can walk on the walls.

It's a very dominating structure and feels Dwarven in scale.

Shame we don't have any walls to match Image IPB

Just another question sorry.

The darkening toward the top of the butresses. Is that in the texture or is that vertex shading on the model?

Yeah, in retrospect it's absurdly large. Even giants look puny next to it. Oh well.... mark it up to Dwarven ego.

It's in the texture. I... borrowed it from the RB Ruins hakpack. :innocent:

Here's a shot of the underside:

Alas, the metal door looks better in the game than it does in this pic.

Here's the completed grand entrance:

The view from the back:

Image IPB

I changed the chimney dome to a placeable and reworked it. The roof walk mesh necessarily prohibits entering through the main gate, but that's okay because the camera gets messed up when the character steps onto the ramp. The only working door is on the staircase. The side walls are separate placeables.

Truly inspiring work!

Nice to see some walls as well. That buttressed tower could be used to make a fortress with walls as well. It would make a great corner tower too.

Not sure how the Elf got in though :)

Next up is a straight port of a bunch of NWN statues. They look decent, but they are not up to the quality of the existing NWN2 statues. The question I have is whether these would work for you as smaller, Decor-style gold statues? What do you think, keep or skip?

Here's an example:

Image IPB

The one on the left is a scaled up decor statue. :)

How does the polycount compare to the ones from NWN2?

I suppose even if they're comparable in polygons (where one might say that you might as well just scale down the NWN2 statues for décor), if they're small enough that the details don't matter, then it would be nice to have some additional poses and materials than what's currently available.

In this example, the gold statue has 896 faces, the monk statue 692. But some of the more complex statues (in this set) go over 2,000.

I think we are missing some small decorative statues. I would not use the big scale, it looks out of place compared to the statues of NWN2. But small yes.
