800-900 polygons is still ok for a decorative placeable like this. Even 2000 is acceptable, of course if the builder doesn't fill an entire area with multiple copies of this statue.^_^

It's strange that the golden statue is heavier than the monk one, even if it looks less detailed. Maybe there are some hidden polys that can be deleted ?

I think the monk statue probably looks more detailed because it has a dedicated texture, whereas the gold statue is just a gold material. The statues are built out of many smaller shapes so there is a fair amount of overlap. Unfortunately, reducing the number of polys will be laborious.

Ed.: I reduced the count to 836 by removing hidden faces.

Here's the full collection of statues that have been ported. There's a number more but I think that's enough for now. B)

Any concerns?

Well I'm getting near the end of my reserved range and there are just a few more I want to build for this set. Are there any requests for dwarven-themed placeables you'd like to see?

Is it possible to create a big forge? Something like the thing you find in Dorn's Deep in IWD?

It's not like tons of people are reserving new ranges right now. Make as many things as you feel like.

I know, but there's some other topics I'm interested in working on so I'm going to wrap it up soon. Reaching the end of the range seems like a nice, tidy end point.

You mean something like this?

There's some large forge parts in the Dwarven Halls tileset that I could fashion together. It won't be that fancy, but I'll see what I can do.

That's exactly what I had in mind yes. Whatever you could fashion would be a cool addition I think to some dwarven halls.

Is this large enough? (It's still in work, as you can probably tell if you look closely.)

That's a nice design/model Bob, I like the lintel over the fire. I think it's as big as a forge might sensibly be.

Is it always on or would you be thinking on on/off options.

Also is it all one model for the front and back of the forge or do you plan that they be separated?

It's all one model and I hadn't really planned on making an 'off' version, but you could always retexture the hot coals. If you want to hide the furnace back end, I've built it so you can situate the model in a wall.

There's a coal chute in the back and I was thinking of adding bellows.

Back view. Most of the model was made from scratch; the metal furnace sides and texture are from some tiles in the Dwarven Halls hak, which I scaled down and reworked. From an engineering perspective it's not an ideal design because of the open top, but I think that allows for a more dramatic appearance. I've reworked the coal chute and added a pair of control arms (for pumping the internal bellows and changing the louver planes).

That'll do, I hope. :)

The bricks looked too small so I scaled them up and added a grill to the front.

To expand on the theme, I think I'll build a large smelter bucket.

Thats a good one Bob, that would make a good city placeable too, along with the barrel on a cart.

Somehow I missed the post on this one. Yes, this one is exactly what I had in mind. Something like a big, open oven/forge. Really good job there.

Thanks. Yes, the theme has gradually been drifting towards one of crafting and artisanship, rather than specifically a dwarven residence. I also decided not to bother converting the tile set 'cause there's some other stuff I want to work on.

Here's a large bellows for generating the kind of heat dwarven smithies like to work with...

That's a very nice model. It looks like it is based on something from RL. Is it something you've seen?

Yes it's similar to the bellows being used at the Guédelon Castle in France. (About half way down the page.)

Thank for that, I heard of that castle project from a news article a ways back but had no idea what it was called or where it was. So thanks I enjoyed looking at that.

Are you going to try the wheel crane next :D

More eye candy: a well-furnished dwarven smithy...

Image IPB

The smelter is finished now; I widened the chimney and darkened the oven exterior a little, then added a side port for extracting the melt. I also took PJ156's suggestion and detached the furnace from the forge so now they can be mixed and matched as you prefer.

In retrospect, I guess there's not a good thematic match between some of the models. Oh well. Maybe I need a lighter-hued brick?
Well, just a couple of models left to build for the brewery and then I'm done! :)
