How did the Protheans get a star to go into supernovae?

If I had to use techno babble...

I would say they used some sort of mass effect field to rapidly increase the star's mass. Due to the increase in mass the pressure and temperature within the interior of the star also increased, this caused a runaway thermal reaction that creates the supernova. Either that or the increased mass of the star causes the core to collapse into a black hole also releasing enough energy for a supernova.

I guess they also could have just sent an asteroid crashing into the system's mass relay but your explanation sounds cooler.

you asked how they got a star to go supernova, blowing up the relay isn't a star and would just "blow" the star away not create a supernova. Unless the star was close to going supernova and the added pressure caused it to explode.
