You know, most companies have this thing called "customer service."

Enough with the wiseacre act. He didn't say "I had that problem and this is what they told me."

As for sales, the fact that digital content is ephemeral and likely to quit working someday is exactly why Steam is the better deal. Origin broke all my old Bioware game codes except ME1. I went back and re-bought DAO Ultimate Edition on Steam during a sale. When I found that my DA2 code wasn't working anymore either, I might have bought it on Steam if it had been in a sale- but it wasn't, so I didn't.

Haven't tried ME1 in a while. That's probably broken now, too.

Here is an article on the issue of digital right from a legal standpoint:

Rock, Paper, Shotgun: Do We Own Our Steam Games?

Here is the conclusion of the article:

Steam isn’t a publisher, it’s a shop.  (When Steam bans you and block your access to all your games without giving you a clear reason,) this is the equivalent of being suspected of shoplifting from a  GAME/GameStop, and having an employee come to your house and remove your entire gaming collection from your shelves. Individual publishers of  the purchased games aren’t consulted for a Steam ban. This is Valve  overriding all those individual licenses with their own, and removing access to your purchased goods. And, despite there being no legal  position yet known, that doesn’t seem right at all."

It’s a little frustrating to realise that the answers to every  question are, at this point, “We don’t know.” Can Valve legally ban you  from accessing thousands of pounds worth of games you’ve purchased? We  don’t know. Can EA really stop you from playing online games because you said a swear on their forum? We don’t know. And infuriatingly, the only way we’re ever going to find out is when it happens to someone  rich/supported enough to take it to court. In the meantime, it seems  that publishers are taking advantage of the ambiguity to write their own laws in the form of EULAs and other agreements, whether they could  survive the test of a court or not. And that’s always worth bearing in  mind when you consider what you actually own.

Buying and selling games, music, books and videos on digital platforms is still a relatively young industry.  Sonner or later we will see major lawsuits that settle and clarify the digital right issues.  I am saying this right now: if Steam ever blocks my access to my game, I will definitely take Valve to the court.  I would encourage you guys to do the same.   It is unfortunate that gamers are generally lazy, inert people who would allow game companies get away with screwing over them because they just want to play games and do nothing else.  I suspect the lawsuits that will settle the issues will be coming from consumers who got screwed over by digital music, books or videos rather than gamers.

It's a nice principle, but in the real world it comes down to money.

It can take a lot of it to take a major company to court, who will just tie things up there to drive the cost up for you.

If you think everybody has that kind of money to throw away on principle, you have a very warped view of reality.

I'm curious about this: how did Origin 'break' your codes?

As for ME1, you can't add it to the Origin client like you can other games, so I doubt very much that it could be affected.

Origin can't recognize CD-keys for games prior to 2009 (which includes Mass Effect) however there are alternate ways you can still redeem them.

help.ea.com/article/redeem-your-serial-code-in-origin

And, for those people, I don't work for EA - I just found a solution for CD key issues and I am sharing it

^ I actually used the same to download all my Bioware games except ME1 through Origin, so I didn't need a CD for Origins or ME2.

So for me, Origin is a bonus in the Bioware department.

DAO was broken by the unauthorized DLC bug. That is, I could play it, but couldn't load any old saves or play the DLCs I bought because it kept telling me they were unauthorized. This may or may not have been caused by the changeover to Origin, I'm not sure, but it was around the time Origin was being introduced.

ME2: When I tried to install my Steam version of ME2 on a new PC, it told me my codes were already being used.

DA2: Same, only I had a disc version. I was told the code was invalid.

No, I didn't subject myself to EA customer service hell in order to beg to play the games I bought- I decided I didn't care enough anymore to do so, and this is the main reason I still haven't bought ME3 and am very reluctant to buy DAI, either. I'm sick of having games I bought stop working due to draconian, broken DRM.

As mentioned, I re-bought DAO because I saw it for cheap in a Steam sale, and might have done the same for DA2 (I wanted to play it in order to make a video someone requested) but it wasn't available on Steam so I gave up.  If I could get ME3 at Steam sale prices, I'd probably play that, too.

Don't put yourself through that.

I will say Origin seems to demand my bloody email and password on a regular basis. Annoying. F*ck it it, all clients are annoying.

Same. Better than booting me out of offline mode, though.

Well black mark against steam right now, it seems to be down.
Perfect timing, christmas day everyone has their new games, and oops they can't play them.

And now it's back up. But will it stay up?

I can't either. Not surprised, it has to be the most unstable client around.

Steam is pulling off an Obamacare because they're giving away Left4Dead 2 for free.

It should last for two days.

If you miss it, they might have it on sale again on the last day of the Holiday sale.

So the deal I see today for the Sims, will still be on tomorrow? I noticed the prices go up after some time by a couple of quid every now and then.

Would everyone kindly turn off Steam and let me download Sims please.

It seems like the Sims 3 deal went live yesterday, so you still have about 18 hours to get it before it expires.

Just keep trying, I suppose.

Here's the direct link. Good luck.

Thats what i've been doing. The Steam program is barely running so I decided to check out the main website. I'm having trouble purchasing or logging in.

If I dont get these games, I'm going to go bonkers. I can't get past login or purchase for myself. I just have connection error, come on, I've come this far!

Yeah, I'm surprised that there are still many people who don't already have Left4Dead 2.

Let's hope the traffic will calm down after a few more hours so people can actually buy things.

How does purchasing work? Lets say I add a product that costs 5 quid into my cart, I don't purchase it, I just leave it in the cart.

The next day, the price doubles but I had the game in my cart when it was 5 quid, could I still get it for 5 quid or will it take into account the updated price?

I don't know if it's just my PC, but the Steam client has always been laggy. Going from forum to forum is a bloody chore, and I don't like how site navigation is designed. Don't like how you access customer help either. On GOG, everything is lightning fast, including downloads. To get customer assitance, you just e-mail them. And with both Origin and GOG, you can get refunds.
