Hey all!
This is my first post on these forums as I started playing DA:O a week ago and LOVE IT. I have recently been playing a dual-weapon elf warrior and enjoyed it alot but after taking control of the healer in my party decided I quite enjoyed it but also enjoyed being able to dish out damage.
So basically what im interested in is whether or not there is a way of being a "support healer" or basically a damage dealer with the option of healing if things get hairy.
Also looking at the specializations - Blood Mage doesnt really appeal to me, nor does shapeshifter. Is Spirit Healer an okay specialization to take for being a damage dealing mage?
Thanks in advance.

Yes, it works very well. You can get along just fine as a healer/supporter with just heal/group heal and they are both first tier talents. Of course you can go deeper into the respective trees for even greater healing potential, or you can branch out for more CC/buffs/debuffs.
Before I start rambling too much, yes it's very possible and it's what I did on my first playthrough, in fact.

if you take arcane warrior and spirit healer, you should be fine
beacause all the damage you take should be either healed,or reduced by your armor
just invest in the primal spells.

Awesome thanks guys - really fast responses too!
One last quick sort of off topic question - Got to around level 20 on my warrior and did not bother taking rogues anywhere. Am I missing something or do they just run around picking locks for me?

They can disarm traps to make things easier for you, and unlock chests (although you don't miss out on anything important by not unlocking them.)
The bonus is both of these actions give the entire group a bit of XP.

You don't need to invest many talent points to be a strong healer. You only need about 4-7 talents total from creation and spirit healer and anything else is icing on the cake.

Thanks again - one more, one more thing
I see an "Arcane Warrior" can use heavier armor. Do I need to invest some points in strength or is it more like when you become an Arcane Warrior your strength is increased by xxxx?

When you take the first talent in the Arcane warrior tree, you are allowed to substitute the strength requirement for armor for you magic stat.
I.E, a piece that requires 42 strength normally would instead require an AW to have 42 magic.
As an AW, you do not need to add any points into strength at all.

An Arcane Warrior/Spirit Healer looks like an fantastic character build. Does that first Arcane Warrior Talent make so Magic determines the amount damage a sword does instead of strength? And I would assume you take AW Spec before spirit healer?

Just been playing a little and cant quite decide on my party setup for later. Which of the following would be effective with me damaging and throwing the VERY occasional heal...
Myself
Wynne or Morogarn
Alistair or Shale
Lelaine or Warhound
I seem to lack damage in the first set (Me, W, A and L) but lack healing in the second set (Me, M, S and Doggie).
Any thoughts?

Yes, your + magic determines your sword damage.
I actually took SH first, because I a) unlocked it first (:
If you want to be more caster-ish you might not want to wear massive armor...if you mostly want to just melee and spot heal, then you should be able to easily manage massive (which would require 42 in magic). Just keep in mind you're going to be very mana pot dependent as an AW, ESPECIALLY if you're going to also want to cast.
It's doable, but you'll definitely have to invest some points in willpower, which isn't necessarily a bad thing. I also bumped my CON up to about 20 so I could survive grabs and such. If you want to tank (and it's very doable) the healing aura from SH is a nice aggro grabber
