Mass effect 4 : pirate

The reason I would like this setting is the following.
-It wouldnt have to address the complicated implications of making it a sequel after the ME 3 endings. I think that trying to make a sequel without upsetting people is going to be hard.
-You would get to explore a quite long period of time where alot changed in the galaxy that was glossed over (in the games). Gameplay wise it would be cool to explore the early implications of the adaptation of geth weaponry and the development of heat sinks. I would love to see the early prototypes for this change in technology.
-you would get to play as an alien without having to force anything too drastic lore wise.
-lots of chance to customise your character and crew (and ship?). Customisation of armor, ships and weapons makes more sense in my mind for a pirate to do rather than someone in a military.
-a legitimate chance to add in space combat without feeling like a gimmick. Make it a main part of the gameplay. Most of the main races space navies were decimated after the battle of the citadel, I imagine the 2 year period after that was rife for piracy. Maybe a chance to add in a slight open world element to the series.
-If fan service had to be done, there is a chance to strengthen certain characters apparent sudden character changes from ME1 to ME2. When ME 2 was released I remember the outcry that Liara suddenly felt more confrontational and militant than in ME 1, I think it would be a good challenge for the writers to get to show that gradual change over the 2 year period. Same goes for Tali. Also a chance to explore the expansion and development of cerberus.
- A chance to not play the hero. Another interesting writing challenge. We have been more or less the hero of the galaxy from ME1 - ME3, what about breaking that gaming trope and making the main characters story personal with subtle galaxy wide implications. Its a chance to give more depth and explanation to events in ME 2 and 3, when the character does not know the implications of their actions, but us as players, having played the trilogy can see the bigger picture.
-An opportunity to explore the darker seedier side of Mass effect. We got hints of this from Omega, but we were always the outsider looking in. I want to be part of it.
If I was Bioware and I was developing mass effect 4 my main concerns would be:
1)exploring new gameplay concepts, so the series doesnt get stale. I think the space combat element would do this. Look at the success of Assassins Creed Black Flag in making people interested in that series again, and the general success of open world games in recent years.
2)Keeping the core fans. I think in general, Mass effect fans love thinking about the Meta game. The implications of actions in game on the universe. This could be a game that further strengthens the lore and also a second bite of the apple in shoring up some of the loose ends and weaker lore changes.
3)Pushing the boundry on what Bioware are good at. Which IMO is creating interesting personal stories. When I think of what I like in the mass effect series, its things like lair of the shadow broker and citadel DLC rather than the main story arc. I think by narrowing the parameters for the main story, and not having it be massive in scope gives more opportunity for bioware to write what they are good at writing.

Nope, still not possible. ME space combat is and will always consist of waiting for the computer to give you a firing solution unless you want to retcon all ME physics...-a legitimate chance to add in space combat without feeling like a gimmick. Make it a main part of the gameplay. Most of the main races space navies were decimated after the battle of the citadel, I imagine the 2 year period after that was rife for piracy. Also, your choices might not affect Shepard's story, so no import bugs, and I would also like to be able to play as an alien in the single player part of the game..

Would be a great concept for multiplayer. Sure we know how this story ends but it would be fascinating watching it play out like scarface in space.

I actually kind of like the idea of being a character that exists in the underbelly of the galaxy, but I would prefer this to be the framing of the main character, not the entire point of the plot. Take, for example, the overarching plot of Firefly/Serenity. The team is basically a band of miscreants and former soldiers that do dirty jobs for money, but then a much bigger story is thrust upon them, which has nothing to do with their life of crime. It doesn't need to be saving the galaxy, but the game would work a lot better, and be more accessible, if it was about saving *something* that doesn't involve pirate/smuggler/mercenary shenanigans.
Not far from my idea on my Mass Effect: Restoration post. I like this one a lot. Not being the first choice for galaxy saving, but doing it anyhowB)

Mostly here to say the two-year span between 1 and 2 is a really rich opportunity for a different game or 3. Dunno if they'll take it, but it's big enough to not feel arbitrary and gives the game some wiggle room.

Deniable secret agent of Alliance operating mostly on his own between smugglers, mercenaries and other criminals with his own upgradeable ship and hand picked crew where only few know about their true superiors.

I agree with this.
Also, I would find it very difficult to engage with any events set in the timeframe suggested in the OP, because it would be next to impossible to think any of it would matter. Anyone you save will probably die anyway, anything you build will probably be destroyed anyway, any place you become fond of will probably be nuked, etc.
One of the biggest challenges of Mass Effect 4 will be to demonstrate that the Mass Effect universe is alive and well after ME3, and to establish characters and locations within that universe for whom we can hope for a decent future.

I don't know how I'd feel about it being a midiquel though. It might feel redundant knowing that everything you achieve is going to be stomped all over by the Reapers. That said, one thing I do want is a smaller scale story. No more deciding the fate of entire species. So it might not particularly matter if it's all going to get sh-- on by the Reapers.
Still, imo they need to just tackle the endings straight away, none of that dancing between prequels and midiquels because they don't know how to keep everyone happy. They could just canonise one, people will have to live with it.

Wrongly convicted criminal sentenced en-route to a penal colony when something goes wrong. Starting couple of squadmates would be prisoners. Similar to Blake's 7 if anyone ever saw that.
That would be good if the PC could be as sarcastic as Avon.
