The game that killed all the interest I had in the Final Fantasy series....... no thank you.

LOOOL

really? Never heard that! What I heard was when Squaresoft dropped it's name and merged with SE because of the box-office failure of Square's Final Fantasy movie spirits within..........which what made the Enix merge

so yeah.....do some research and quite whining about FVIII. Game rocks! May not be as popular with FFVII, IX, X but it's FFXII, 13 that aren't doing justice with the series as it's now become

My opinion is just that "My Opinion" I did not like this game (which is putting it mildly) and I posted the reasons why I don't like the game (which were respected by other board members)

I don't need to do reasearch. I played the game, I didn't like it.  Just as you have your opinion that you love it, I will disagree with that but I will respect your right to feel that way about the game, I suggest you show that same respect to others rather than bashing the person for not agreeing with your perceptions of things.

I dunno, I'd be surprised if SE put FFIX on Steam, since unlike the previous two games IX was PS1 exclusive and was never relaeased on PC. It'd be great if they did put it on Steam though. I borrowed a friend's copy a while ago and for me at least it still holds up as well as it did the first time I played through it back in 2001. The flow or speed of the battles was slower than I remembered though.

7 & 8 were the only games that were ported to PC and these games are more or less straight re-releases with no updates or changes.  So for them to release 9 they would need to do some work porting the code over which would be a lot more ffort then simply making a Windows game compatible with a newer version of windows.

FF VIII was pure awful from what I recall of it. The last FF game I liked was VII.

Yes, take me down as another person that disliked FFVIII. :P It wasn't the game that killed my interest in the Final Fantasy series. That was FFX. But it was definitely the game that made realize Squaresoft was no longer the king of RPGs. Terrible magic system, thoroughly unlikable protagonist, and awfully linear.

I only managed to complete the demo on PC before deciding it wasn't for me. I watched my best friend play through the whole thing, though. Really didn't look like my idea of fun.

The only thing I appreciate about FF8 is it gave us The Man with the Machine Gun; which is a great battle theme. Of course even that was limited to a side character you didn't get to play much since all the focus was on Emo McStoicpants. >.<

I'm glad other people liked it. I on the other hand would hesitate to take this game were it gifted to me--nevermind buying it. :P

FF IX will surely be a buy for me if it should come out for pc.
The story was adorable and the role of the moogles the biggest in all the FF games with a big sidequest involving the chocobo.

I for one loved the card game in both FF VIII and IX which was/is still a nice side addition.

For some reason I've noticed that people who love VII hate VIII, and visa versa. A trend.

As for this, definitely intend to get it when it goes on sale, like I did with VII.

Now if only Square loses their snobbery and starts releasing current games on the PC (they're developed on PC anyway).

I like every FF game from 1-9 with the exception of 8. My favorites are IV, V, and VI. Actually, my ultimate favorite would probably be Tactics, but that isn't acknowledged as part of the core series. :P

What really did in FFVIII for me was the draw system. Despite being the kind of person who used to max out everything in every RPG for no good reason, I found drawing magic tedious as hell. I guess because grinding was somewhat optional in other games, and it felt rewarding to turn every character into godlike beings after putting in all the work. Whereas in FFVIII drawing was a necessity to advance.

I disliked VII & VIII so I don't think it's a trend.  Favourite FF's were 1,3, and 6.

What'd you think of materia? i just played that for the first time relatively recently, and I can't imagine the utter drudgery of trying to max some of the higher-level materia.

It wasn't very different from FFVI's esper system to me. Definitely dull, but it wasn't necessary to power most of them up unless you wanted to kill the weapon bosses and such. My first time through FFVII was quick and sloppy. XD Sephiroth was actually tough.

Maxing them out was definitely drudgery. The game's internal clock usually stopped counting long before I was done. Back then I used to turn on the radio or put on a CD, then mute the game and repetitively kill stuff until a materia was maxed out. Then I'd give the cloned materia to another character and repeat the process. The exception was blue magic which couldn't be cloned. It totally not necessary. Buuut, there was something special about everyone being able to attack four times, then if they get hit, counterattack four times. All while being able to cast the best magic and summons.

I don't think I could do that today if I wanted to.

4X is pretty awesome.

But yeah, it can be tedious.

Yeah. Although I liked FF7, it did get too grindy at points. It was just the typical JRPG grind I was used to. FFVIII's draw system was totally new and it just didn't click.

That said, I wouldn't call FFVIII the worst RPG I've played or seen by a long shot. I've finished games I'd consider worse. Why I bothered, I'll never know. >.<

I'm not too picky when it comes to games I can enjoy. I actually have to self regulate, because I could play just about any game out there. I don't have the time or money for that.

Anyway. FF VIII. Cool. Hope SE brings XV (and XIII, pretty pretty pretty please? *bambi eyes*) to the PC too.
