When I first saw Mirandas power list posted I thought someone was trolling, that set is too OP. Why was she not part of the team? EDI could have made way.

The Normandy would definitely have been alright in the event of a water landing.

I'd have wanted Legion (not the ME3 code-junkie though), Shiala, and Kal'Reegar.

EDIT: And Miranda while we're at it.

@StreetMagic, to be fair, Kaidan, Ashley and Tali were only recruitable in the last half of the vanilla game, with Liara, Garrus, EDI and James as the only option before that and more forced-participation missions for Liara than anyone else. That is inevitably going to throw the stats off. I do think Kaidan died a lot because he was boring in ME1, though.

My question about Kaiden is this: What is his central character arc? He doesn't appear to have one as far as I can tell, beyond the need to overcome his trust issues with Cerberus (which does nothing to distinguish him as a character, as they're pretty much the same issues Ashley has, only to a slightly lesser degree). I don't really have a handle on his central needs and wants as a character. The character might a bit too inoffensive for his own good.

As far as ME2 squadmates I'd like to have seen in ME3, I'll go with Legion and Miranda (and maybe even Jacob), the latter just because of the Cerberus connection. Mordin is my favorite character (obviously) but I was actually pretty happy with his role in ME3.

I'd have preferred the original script where you get to let Kai Leng kill Liara. Then recruit Jack for my de facto Adept. Then kill off Kaidan and get a sentinel in Miranda. Vega can never exist for all I care. Grunt would replace him from the very start. I'm his battlemaster. He never left my side. He was on Earth the whole time. B) Also, EDI would never have become a sexbot. Joker would get laid by someone real. I would mind Legion around, even if he wants to upload Reaper code in the end (and I shoot him).

Jacob at least had a minor character arc... revolving around "red tape" and frustration with the Alliance. But that's a rehash of Garrus, who does "red tape" better.

Most everyone's arcs kind of fizzle in 3, except EDI and maybe James. At least Kaidan has a strong scene post-Gellix. But yeah, sometimes it seems like the VS was only a squaddie after Mars because they were LIs in 1 and the devs had all but promised. Tali feels out of place after Rannoch too, especially since I don't find her powers handy against Reaper units.

Jacob also had daddy issues, which was a rehash of well, everybody else on the squad. I think that an interesting story for Jacob could have revolved around whatever personal history led to him being so frustrated with Alliance red tape, or so distrustful of Cerberus (or both). The character seems kinda weak because we never have any way to relate to his doubts; we don't have a feel for the conflicting impulses that both draw him to and repel him from Cerberus, so he just ends up seeming like some dude who can't make up his mind.

I guess I could agree on that with EDI. Even if it's a pinnochio arc, it's still something. Outside the squad, Jack had more dimensions added too. And got hotter than she already was (Yeah, great time to take her out of the series. Wtf). Miranda could've grown, if they made her contemplate things important to her (Cerberus and their current state), and not just do another family story. Do they really think people give that much of a **** about that?

True. He did have daddy issues. Except, I'm not sure what they were. He's like a character that tells you his problems halfway, but jerks you around if you go further.  I can understand his issues with the Alliance though (or the Council). They both suck.

Yeah, that's true. It seems like Jacob is being set up to be the buddy character early on, then he suddenly gets rather tight-lipped. I'm not sure the writers really had any idea where they were going with this character at all.

As part of the 1.5%, i feel like I must defend Kaidan. First of all, his powerset is just a defensive version of hers, just like James and Ashley are offensive and defensive versions of one another (Oh man, think if you could put them both on one team with a vanguard Shep...) Secondly, he tells you in the first game that his past is squared away, so that is pretty much out of the question. HOWEVER, I do think with some minor script/gameplay changes, his arc could really have grown. I just can't help but shake my head at the missed opportunity for him to have met either Jack or Miranda, or Heaven forbid, both at the same time while serving on the Normandy. I think he should have been the must have squaddie for Grissom (with Jack alive) with Ashley taking up Tuchanka (with Wrex dead so she can see what she wrought >.<)

About James. I may again be in the minority, but I prefer James over Grunt. Grunt was never anything special to me because of his story (I'm a teenager NOW!!!!), while James had the distinction of choosing to let a colony die for a lost cause. It's one of the few times in the ME universe where we see the bad side of the coin toss, and someone having to come to terms with it. It's especially poignant because it was OUR actions with the terrorist group that led to James' actions being redundant. I actually wish they would have acknowledged that a little more during the game.

Finally, I would be a fan of the Thessia choice. Everyone else from the first two games has been on the chopping block at one point, why not Liara too?

Grunt is far more important than "Teenager Krogan".

His personality isn't limited to just him. The shaman and Okeer both provide insight into what Grunt represented: The side of Krogan culture that embraces destruction (and surviving it). That actually LIKED having their planet nuked. That it builds character. That only true Krogan crawl atop their dead. It's ****ing extreme. And totally alien to how any humans or even Wrex thinks.

The suicide mission excuse is crap. Not sure why they even use it, if it didn't apply to Tali and Garrus.

I don't know the ins and outs of how this all works, but it seems to me that there's so many variables here, because the cast is considerably overcrowded. How do you juggle all of these characters properly when more than half of them can die? I think Garrus and Tali's saving graces are that they're both sort of iconic characters that have been there since the beginning (which makes them necessary inclusions for a non-import game), and Tali's tie to one of the major plots of the game is established at the very start of the series. And even then, that plot can still be resolved without her, or even Legion. I'm not sure how recruitment could possibly work. Miranda is the special case though. Even if you have Liara occupying her old quarters, she could have been situated in the war room for the final stretch of the game to fight Cerberus, with EDI serving as her substitute if she dies. Again, I don't know how all of this would really work, so I can't comment on the technical aspects, but having two states for each plot thread does seem pretty complicated.

 Grunt and Miranda.

Don't get me wrong, Vega is a good character and I like him. But I don't know him at all at the beginning of ME3. I also disliked him at first since he was pretty much the krogan "replacement" in the game. Grunt was an awsome addition in ME2 and I would have loved having back as a squadmate. I felt the same way with Diana Allers as I did Vega. I would have greatly preferred Emily Wong. I got nothing against meeting new characters, but don't introduce them on the last game of the trilogy and have them take the spots of characters I already grew to love in the past games.

Miranda was one of my most used squadmates in ME2. She just complimented my adept and vanguard shepards so well. Overload to bring down shields and warp for combo detonations. And I might be the only one with this opinion, but I think Liara might have learned a lot from Miranda as far as intelligence work is concerned. It might have made some interesting dialogue between them.

As a final note, Incinerate would have been a more useful skill to have as a sentinel. Both for me and or my squadmate. I never touched cryoblast at all. I could always find a better skill to rank up.

Jack, Kal'Reegar and Zaeed. Jack because...well, Jack (also due to a lack of biotics). Kal'Reegar because it's Kal'Reegar.

I think they got the default squad right. The old cast from ME1 needed to return.

That being said I think what Bioware should have done is had the end run involve another suicide mission, and for that your entire surviving squad from all three games would join for the final mission.

Miranda and Legion.

Miranda isn't a squadmate in ME3 because, uh.

Legion is a strange case. He's one of those characters that's just as important as Shepard to the plot, but being a Geth he would easily be able to join the Normandy.

My view is that ME2 should have introduced fewer new characters, and done less to marginalize the ME1 ones in the first place. Having as my ME3 squad just the ME1 squad minus my favorite (Wrex), and with my second favorite being largely a shadow of her former self (Ashley) wasn't the way I would have done things. But yes, a suicide-type mission at the end of ME3 with the whole gang would have been nice (it should probably have been in ME3 and not in ME2).

I agree. You can't just supplant the old crew indefinitely throughout the game, especially not when they're actually popular. It's already enough that one is forced to die and another finds his place permanently outside of the crew (and that's if he even survives).

I like the suicide mission dynamic. It could be really complicated, but I don't think it would be impossible to do well. I would've loved if certain choices, like a major arc choice, affected the fates of certain characters. Could you imagine the outrage if Tali died because the geth were not there to help the quarians on the ground?

Probably Samara and Mordin. Thane deserves the rest, and the others are either cerberus, DLC characters, or busy.
