It's a solid choice, but under 200$ you should go for a U2312 unless you really need the HDMI port (for a future PS4?)

Sony doesn't make regular computer monitors and Samsung is Korean.

Neither Dell nor Asus make their own LCD panels. Both companies source their monitors from various LCD manufacturers. It's usually very difficult to tell who made your monitor unless you open it up.

I know a lot of Dell monitors are LG's LCD panels and Asus also uses panels from Samsung and LG. Generally speaking, the best LCD monitors are based on Samsung's PLS or the more common IPS panels made by LG (they are both Korean if that matters to you), but these high quality panels are also more expensive than your typical TN panel displays.

If you only want to play games, it is better to get a super fast TN panel like the Asus VG series monitors with 144hz refresh rate or one of those 120/144hz monitors from BenQ.

Well my Sister has two laptops: a 3 years old Sony and got an Asus few month ago (the second's monitor is "not good"). I've seen with my own eyes the mediocre quality of Asus and Dell and awesomeness of Sony. I'm sure Samsung and LG main monitor products have very good quality too.

Don't know much about who makes monitors for Dell and Asus. If the Koreans make them, it shouldn't be the good products of them (Grade B or C?). You know wealthy people buy MacBook, HP, Sony etc. laptops but Dell is for the poor...

Bah... I have been looking around and there are so many options for monitors. Should I be looking for IPS & LED/LCD monitors?

Asus is the one leading the whole high end 144Hz TN gaming thing right now and Dell makes overall the best afordable consumer/prosumer IPS displays (with exceptions ofc).

Samsung is Korean and Sony doesn't even make consumer oriented monitors anymore... what are you talking about?

Why do you recommend that Dell Monitor if you do not mind me asking? I am still unsure what this contrast ratios of 50 mil:1, 2 mil :1 etc. exactly mean. Is this a better monitor than the other one I linked earlier?

www.newegg.com/Product/Product.aspx

I really hate not knowing what all these specs mean. It frustrates me. :pinched:

Vastly better color reproduction and ergonomics (height, tilt, portrait mode...)

Those 6ms extra of latency are irrelevant unless you play like hardcore FPS games at professional level.

Forget specs, check reviews.

How am I going to fit 900 GB of games on a 128 SSD that's more expensive?

wot

900/15 (average game?) = 60 games... do you play 60 games at the same time?

I never uninstall games. Can't imagine doing so.

it's actually way more than 60 games but a bit less than 900, it's actually like 625 now.

I jump between games depending on how I'm feeling. Maybe I want to play a little stealth. Maybe an RPG. Maybe something twitch. Maybe some Assassin's Creed. Maybe a good ole real turn-combat game.

Uninstalling games would be like taking all of my books and putting them in some kind of storage until I "want to read them."

Exactly how much of a difference would I see with using a SSD to boot my OS? My computer takes several minutes to boot up; so if the difference is rather small I can use the SSD for my games to save space on the SSD.

My normal, 1 terabyte 7,200 RPM hard drive that's filled with like 925 GB of information goes from a cold start to completely ready in just under one minute.

Apparently an SSD is half that.

Isn't that what you do with books, put them on the shelf until you read them? How is that any different?

Well I'm not going to argue with that if it works for you but... good luck with those next-gen 50GB games.

Having 5~10 games installed and the rest on the shelf/GoG/Steam/Origin seems to be the mainstream solution.

The practicality of leaving your games in the Cloud depends a lot on how decent your internet connection is.

Any keywords to look for in the specs? Every monitor seems to use flashy words to describe their products and it is hard for me to decipher the good qualities I need.

I take it professional reviews are more important than consumer reviews?

Put them on a shelf, not take them somewhere off-site which is what an uninstall is.

That's what a second drive is for, which I hope to get sometime in the near future. I don't buy very many games per year, so it's not a worry.

I have read the reviews for that monitor and the larger 1920 x1200 version of it: it looks like the later editions suffer from yellow tinting/bleedings based on the reviews from Amazon and Newegg. Makes me hesistant about buying either one.

I know I do want a IPS monitor though. I have already ordered the other computer components from Newegg and Amazon. This is the final part I need to decide on very soon.

Installing a game only takes about ten minutes. Fifteen to twenty minutes if it's a big game (all that on my bogstandard 7200rpm HDD). Savegames, mods etc. are easily saved so that even if you uninstall a game, you can start the same playthrough later when you reinstalled it.

I mean, it's your thing what you do or don't, but I don't see any particular reason why you would hoard all your games on your drives all the time unless you really jump through all those games at regular, short intervals.

I received some of my components on Friday from Newegg... Man that computer case is a Behemoth! I think it will barely fit on my wooden desktop.

Still waiting for the other parts from Amazon but they should arrive in the middle of next week.

I believe I will order this monitor tomorrow:

www.google.com/shopping/product/14361411777656206580

Same specs as the Dell U2312m but without any defective monitors with yellow tint issues.

If the case is too big, you can put it under your desk(top).
My (old) Samsung Monitor's brightness is on 30% and it looks great. I hope your monitor's screen is as good as mine:

http://www.tech-spec...b238q-n75057818

. At least your monitor has lots of ports, the speakers and accessories... mine has none.
