I'm just plugging it into a port about midway up the computer tower labled "VGA", but I'd guess a motherboard.bmwcrazy wrote...
Does it have a discrete video card or are you hooking the monitor to the VGA port on the motherboard?

I think this is probably it. If your computer has a graphics card you may be plugging your monitor into the wrong port. Do you have a DVI port on your computer? If so, it's likely you need to plug your monitor there. Check to see if you have a DVI/VGA adapter to hook up the monitor.

There is a DVI port right next to the VGA port, but it is too big for my monitor plug(which only fits the VGA port).OdanUrr wrote...

Check to see if an adapter came with the computer. If it didn't, I'd encourage you to buy one and try.

I don't believe it came with one, there was only one wire that came with it that we didn't know what it was for(it had clear ports and red wires I think). I'll probably do out and look for one if you think it will help. So what is the difference between the VGA and DVI ports?OdanUrr wrote...

Besides the shape, you mean?
Here's a simple article I found:

By the way, the adapter should look like this:

OK, so if they include more than one knid of port on a PC for your preference, why would one work over the other(ie. in my case, why would the DVI work but not the VGA)?OdanUrr wrote...

Now we're getting a bit technical and I'm not that savvy on the matter, but it's possible the mother cut off the onboard graphics once it detected a video card had been inserted into the PCI slot. That would explain why you can't get any signal from the VGA port. Again, take this explanation with a grain of salt since I may very well be wrong.
