The Heavy Weapon M-920 CAIN

http://masseffect.bi...rsenal/weapons/

Description: The effectiveness and efficiency of mass
effect-based weapon technology has rendered large-scale deployment of
highly explosive weaponry all but obsolete infantry weapons. Normandy's
scientists have prototyped a modified version of traditional
high-explosive rounds that is applied to a 25 gram slug. When
accelerated to 5 km/s, the round is devastating. Though a technically
inaccurate label, this prototype weapon is nicknamed the "Nuke
Launcher", and its high-explosive matrix generates an archetypical
mushroom cloud on impact. It inflicts high damage with large area of
effect. Very effective against armor, shields, and barriers.

This would be what we saw taking out half a dozen husks in one of the vids then. Tasty :)

Sounds like a really fun weapon. I see a lot of the heavy weapons are going to be made on the Normandy and not just found on the field. Makes sense for these weapons to not just be found randomly all over the place for anybody to grab and use. I think this is the heavy weapon I'm looking forward to using the most out of the ones confirmed so far.

While I'm sure the Blackstorm will prove to be just as, if not more powerful than the Cain, there's just something about a handheld nuke that fills me with sadistic glee . Anyways I'll have access to both weapons but will probably wind up using the nuke far more often.

If possible, ill save all my nukes for the smallest possible enemies when they have like 1 health left. Because who doesn't love overkill?

Honestly, that weapon causes just a wee bit too much collateral damage for my tastes. I'll only take it on missions where I'm sure there are no innocents or structures I wish to preserve.

A quick question for all you loremasters: Normandy's scientists have prototyped a modified version of traditional high-explosive rounds that is applied to a 25 gram slug. When accelerated to 5 km/s, the round is devastating.

Does that mean they basically took the HE mod I put into my sniper rifle in ME 1 (+500 dmg & Heat) compacted it down, messed with the explosive properties and designed it to be fired from this new weapon?

If so I'm guessing the blast is non-nuclear even though it does produce a mushroom cloud.

Ah the nuke gun. One of the earliest worrying signs about the new direction Bioware was taking the Mass Effect trilogy. I remember reading the huge debates about it and the plausibility of the mushroom cloud on the old forums.

The description on that arsenal page reads almost like the devs took the more scientifically minded fans' concerns to heart...

Still looks darn silly though. With that radiation hazard sign on the side and the cartoonish design.

I doubt there will be missions like that in ME2. Not having to worry about collateral damage was one of the more pleasant things about ME1.

And I who thought consistency in the Mass Effect lore would prove this impossible. The ONLY reason weapons in ME weren't extremely powerful was because of recoil. You CANNOT accelerate a slug that weighs in at 25 grams to 5 km/s and still survive while holding it. Since they claim the speed is part of the deadlyness of the weapon, the same force WILL be put on your body if you hold the weapon while firing. I mean, why even bother having Dreadnoughts in the first place if a single goddamn human can take that kind of recoil?

Consistency and attention to detail is SO ME1.

This is the episode of "darker", "edgier", and "emotionally engaging". Oh and it's a great shooter too.

Because a human being can't fly through space and doesn't have the shields to withstand return fire? That's like asking why you would bother having tanks when a person could just walk around with a rocket launcher.

They are giant cannons with engines. A human body (and any other alien body for that matter) will not withstand the force applied on your body if you hold a gun with the capability of what the nukegun is described to have. Just look at a vid of a modern sniper rifle like the Barret 50 Caliber. Why do you think the shooter is being pushed back so violently when firing each shot? Recoil.

Now, imagine if you fire that same rifle, only this time the recoil is x1000 stronger than that of the Barret. What would happen to the shooter? He would get his ass handed to him through his mouth, thats what would happen.

I doubt the "Nuke Gun" even has noticable recoil - most guns use mass fields, which pretty much break the laws of physics.

It propels a slug. It will have recoil.

Must be using Collector or Reaper tech to overcome the recoil problem.

In other words, a wizard did it.

All of the weapons in ME use a mass effect field to reduce the mass of the projectile to near zero. After it leaves the weapon, the mass returns. Hence the high velocity and low recoil.
