I just hope they learned from their mistakes... but EA has not shown any sign of improvement yet. Still grabbing money and delivering mediocre games. Personally I don't think the series is salvagable as it is. It certainly can't be post-Shepard - well, it could be, but that would be incredibly stupid - and putting it pre-Shepard will unleash another ****storm because what good is it when you already know how it ends?

There are plenty of ways to go about things, you could even put humans into the Prothean cycle if you'd want to, or even have Shepard fail and put some in a new cycle.
Using the same time span in the same universe could be nice but you'd have to let go of the entire story and create a completely new one. New threat, new people, new racial allegiances, perhaps put some new races out there.

Truly, speculation has no purpose until they give us something solid to work with, which I hope they will do soon - for curiosity's sake.

I am probably missing some key tweets and information - I confess that I don't really keep up with every little post that the devs make about the ME sequel. Still, from the little information I have heard and some thinking I came up with three scenarios that might account for the assertions we have heard so far:

1. This is a Mass Effect game set in the Mass Effect universe.

2. This is game is not Shepard's story.

3. It is a "disservice" to call this game Mass Effect 4.

4. The game "does not have to" take place before or after the Reaper War (ME 1 - 3)

My three completely speculative speculations are this:

The next Mass Effect game may be set in an alternate timeline/universe during the same Reaper war. Imagine a timeline where Shepard died on Virmire or during the assault on the Collector Base (it was a "suicide" mission after all). What happens when the Reapers invade? Who steps up to defend the universe? Perhaps this new hero in this alternate timeline?

The next Mass Effect game takes place in a different part of the galaxy at the SAME TIME as Shepard is fighting the Reapers or Collectors. The Reapers may play a role or be the main motivation, who knows? The point is that it fleshes out the universe and makes Shepard's choices from ME1-3 relevant as those events will be taking place in the background of this story.

And my final speculative speculation is this: The next Mass Effect game takes the "indoctrinated Shepard" idea and runs with it. There was a speculation early-on about the ending that the next Mass Effect game would *not* be from Shepard's POV because Shepard became indoctrinated at the end of ME3. The Reaper War isn't over and the new character must pick of the pieces as Shepard turns on the galaxy. The game would start before the end of ME3, since seeing the alternate POV would be part of understanding what the end events of ME3 really meant.

Of course, none of these could be true too, but they seem to be possible based on the information we have been given. And Bioware, if you're not using these ideas, you have my permission to steal them for future games ;).

The last one seems the least likely - as it could easily be called "Mass Effect 4", but it could also be thought of as "Mass Effect 3 Part 2" since it would cover the same event from a different POV and change the whole meaning of the game. The first one would be interesting - without Shepard and co., does humanity find the Crucible at all? Maybe the war takes a totally different turn. The middle one, personally, seems the coolest and most likely to me. It doesn't change anything about the events of ME1-3, but takes those events to create the backdrop for a different story that also is part of the war on the Reapers.

Thoughts?

Ok considering the endings of ME3, there can't be a sqeuel. Unless Bioware pulls what they did with DA2, and pick an ending for us. I doubt the devs are gonna accomdate all 4 endings. Whatever ending you chose ends the series. I know sad.

Now can Bioware do what Star Wars and Star Trek did and run an alternate timeline? Sure. But Frankly I'd rather they just create a new universe. And maybe this time stick to the lore. And stop treating us player as if we were morons. To this day, I still scratch my head wondering how the current 4 endings got past Q/A? Or maybe it didn't and EA just said "screw it".

So in short, end ME. Start something new. And yes, I'm gonna miss Shepard and company.

I just hope they reconsider and figure out that Shepard is awesome and should never have been disbanded.
The only reason I still frequent these boards is in the hope that they'll do that.

You don't replace Freddie in Queen, and don't replace Bruce in Iron Maiden. Same with Shepard.

Yet Genesis thrived after leaving of Peter Gabriel and his replacing with Phil Collins.
Or Black Sabbath, where Ronnie James Dio replaced main face of group Ozzy Osborne. It divided fan, but it didn't kill Black Sabbath.

And so on and so on...

You never know if replacement on main character, band frontman or such will be failure or sucess, until it happen.

BTW: Also Bruce in Iron Maiden was replacement and then he become iconic and completely overshadowed his predecessor Paul DiAnno.

Replacing Shepard in Mass Effect is more like replacing Ian Anderson in Jethro Tull. He's been the one constant across the whole thing so far.

The one constant? I can't even mock that since I have no idea what you're getting at. Might as well say the same thing about Garrus.

I still have the sinking feeling they might just do a prequel because "they know better"

Hopefully EA will laugh at the idea and can it

I get that sense as well, especially given their obsession with Cerberus. My biggest fear for the series is a prequel dealing with... Cerberus. Granted, I also have long suspected a sequel will canonize Synthesis because BioWare absolutely loved the concept.

One can only hope the enormous backlash tempered either of those courses of act. But then again, it has yet to stop Mac Walters from retroactively shoehorning in Cerberus into the comics at every bloody turn.

Eh, to be fair, you can go through most of the series without him, since you can skip his recruitment in ME1 and kill him off in ME2.

Yeah, I suppose she would count, even if she's just a cameo in ME2 if you don't have LotSB.

I'm late to the thread, but option #2 from the OP seems probable to me.

I can see the game taking place within MEU at the same time as Shepard's saga.

We will play another character that is as much a heavy hitter to the Reapers as Shepard... perhaps that's where Harby rushed off to instead of blowing the Normandy away @ the end of ME3.

Here is some good news for us fearing a prequel.

A lot of people say that when I propose that EA would step in and antagonize the idea if a prequel (because recently they are nearly all missing the sales marks) I am wrong, that things do not work like that, that there is a picture I cannot see.....well here is an excerpt from an interview with Cliff Blizinsky

"I want to get funding, I don't want to do a Kickstarter," he explained. However, having spent much of the past year being outspoken about everything from the viability of horror games as disc-based products to the state of turmoil the industry finds itself in, Bleszinski doesn't sound eager to compromise on his vision: "What I want to do is something familiar but different. I don't want to work with the old guard, per se.

"I'll talk to them, have meetings, but you know the last thing I need is some mid-level marketing guy telling me that, 'Well, traditionally this doesn't sell well, so we're concerned,' and all that, because they're all rearward-looking. And it just drives me f***ing bats***."

That...could be a direction they are going. Of course, time travel is difficult - most fiction mucks it up because they really, really want a certain effect rather than worrying about being consistent with the mechanic of time travel. One of the better exceptions to that tendency I have seen is Primer and that film is super hard to follow.

Dr. Who gets away with by saying "Wibbly" and for some reason I am okay with that.... :wizard:

I think the next ME will be a prequel, I think either they will go the history route and find an event in the MEU to focus on (i.e. the first contact war). Or they'll do something like what Messa FX said, doing a story parallel from shepard's story. I don't see a sequel happening unless they canonize an ending, because I doubt they'll be so brave to let the player's ending choice effect the next ME. Branching story is what caused so much of the mess in ME, so I think they'll play it a little more safely as far as player choice is concerned.

Personally I think they should just canonize destroy and give Shepard another go around. I'm not interested in a prequel, or another main character with a new crew.<_<

I really don't think they'd be so daft to do it, but I never rule out the possibility. Provided that they actually want to make the next game feel like Mass Effect at its core, they only have two and a half decades of history prior to ME1 to establish such a prequel, because humans *must* be in the game.

what makes you think that humans would have to be in it?

No humans would hinder a lot if people's ability to relate with the protagonist

Yeah i don't think they are going to go down that route which is the quivalent of taking a stick and poking fans in the open wound from ME3 ending debacle

If this game is to have any chance of being accessible to the entire gamut of players, there must, at the very least, be an option to play a human being. A major feature of the Mass Effect franchise has been being able to mold the character's appearance as you see fit so that the protagonist is either gender and whatever ethnicity you want. Humanity is just as big a part of the MEU as the other species. Taking that away would only serve to the franchise's detriment. You can't create a game with a customizable human being and then take that away entirely without totally alienating the fanbase.

There's also the little problem of the Reapers certainly winning if the Crucible fails.

I know the first contact war gets suggested a lot but I don't think most people want to spend a whole game gunning down turians. Turians are cool and since we spent a trilogy getting along with them regressing back to being fearful and hating them as a species would be ...uncomfortable.
