The only way mod tools will ever happen is if EA gets some serious competition in the FPS arena from a company which offers mod tools.

Consoles ruined it for everyone :( (Everyone important I mean of course.)

I don't know why they don't just charge for mod kits. Come up with a reasonable price and charge for it. Or kickstarter it. That way it wouldn't cost any money that couldn't be recouped.

The problem is I don't think there is a reasonable price to charge for it, not if some software alone costs $100 per seat.

they are not going to stop moding ,they are just not going to encourage it.
In other word bring your own tools

I don't think they would go as far as Dice did when people figured out how to change the brightness in BF3 (or was it the contrast) by banning their accounts, but that still took a dedicated team a year to do for something that minor. So the question will be how locked is the data for the game, for if its locked down as much as BF3 it might be something we don't see.

This engine is going to be used in a lot of EA games. Last response I read about mods for a BF game was that they were afraid of hackers getting access to the code. So chances of a toolkit being available for public use is next to none.

I was going by what the dev and moderator were saying earlier but that could have been a polite way of saying no

Maybe this time around the file structure will be open enough to allow mods even whitout a toolkit.

I would think that releasing some version of a mod toolkit (not the full kit available to developers) would be a really good idea, because it helps get creative people into into modding, which can lead to them getting into game development. I've heard of several people who went from gamer to developer by discovering a talent for modding games.

I'm thinking --- eventually. In time for DAI? Unlikely. But eventually? - I'd guess a pretty good chance.
Bioware, in all fairness, has been majorly busy with Frostbite and building their own derivative tools if what i read here and there is correct. Give them time.

So yes totally possible.
Just probably not in the timeframe most of us would wish for.

the only reason I would want a toolkit is to upload my meshes into the game like i did with DAO

I do hope so, look at The Witcher series and it's modding support, Oblivion, Fallout 3 & New Vegas and of course Skyrim.

Dragon Age Origins too, these games are ''alive'' even today mostly because of great mods.

You're forgetting the Neverwinter Nights series whose modding community is still alive even today.

I'm happy that we still have Bethesda who actually care about us PC peeps.

You can always trust them.

No toolkit from Bioware, ever again.

You mean like how Bethesda "cared" so much about the PC gamers that they couldn't even be bothered with giving the PC version of Skyrim a proper UI that worked with mouse and keyboard?

EA is one of those entities where hackers don't care about hurting developers' feelings. Unlike the indies, where they tend to be a bit more sympathetic to that sort of thing.

Chances are, it'll be those very hackers that provide everyone with unofficial mod tools.

This is what I'm hoping we're looking at.  However, in the meantime, I'm sure fans are going to come through and try to find a third-party way of editing the game files.  Who knows how easy/difficult that might be at this point.

I know I said this in one of the older "will there be modding?" threads, but in my experience modders will find a way.

That's true, but EA will still feel safer with that option then handing them the key to the backdoor to look for exploits in all the games that use the engine. Patching all those games would be expensive.

they need to first make a decent game with the engine first before they need to worry about hackers. BF4 is still in a sorry state, not as bad as it once was, but still not great. Still too many annoying bugs.
