I absolutely love the ME games but after finishing number 3 I didn't really bother with the multiplayer. Recently though I've come back to try it and I was amazed, and a little surprised, at how many people still seem to play.
What I'm wondering is why do so many of you still play? What is it that you enjoy about the game that has kept you here so long? Is it collecting all the content? The challenge of the missions?
I'd love to know as whilst I'm enjoying playing it myself I don't really see where the longevity in the game is to keep me playing as long as many as you have.
Why do you play ME3 MP?

Well, MP helped me to deal with Gainaxish ending of the trilogy at first.
Then I've got:
Playable turians, quarians and others.
Dynamic gameplay.
Noncompetitive and competitive gameplay at the same time.
Some relation to lore.
Variability of builds.
Consumable ammo powers remind me of ME1

Because it's still fun. Honestly, it's not any more complicated than that for me.

Variety and friends, basically.
The greatest thing in this game is that you can play with so many different characters and weapons that you're sure to find a great build that you never tried even after 1000 hours in the game.
I still enjoy 2-3 games per day. Can't play more if I need to resort to PUGs, though.
With friends, I can stick around for more games and play sillier combinations that I otherwise wouldn't try in Platinum PUGs (characters like a Novaguard or the Vorcha Hunter, or weapons like the Kishock, the Katana or the Striker. Anything that I don't use commonly, basically). We will extract anyway.

Because ME4 isn't out yet.
And... variety.

Good question. I've just come back after an 8 month break and at first the reason was i'm about to start the trilogy again and i wanted to get into the feel and spirit of the universe again but what i think makes me keep playing is those fairly rare moments that are hard to describe, those times when things are hectic, your totally focused, your teams beside you and the music swells and it feels totally epic.
Those moments are much more frequent if your more invested in the why of it, i love interspersing 3 with regular bouts of mp and highly recommened it.

It is not boring and generic like most other multiplayer games.

I loved all the Mass Effect SP games but I always played as a Soldier and ran the same one all the way through. Your team mates were helpful but dim.
With Multi-Player you can change your class and species every game if you want. You have (for the most part) intelligent team mates, you can play with friends or strangers for a different experience.
The game plays better when everyone co-operates. What's not to like.
I've invested over 110 hours and 3500 games into this. Not for building my manifest, I finished that months ago but mainly for the fun I get playing with friends but I play with random people for variety as well, both are fun.

Krogan Soldier
I've already taken two breaks. The first one was almost a year long, taken after April last year a few months after release. MP imbalances meant that one had to play a biotic or infiltrator. The second one was this summer.
The demo was more fun combat than anything in the existing games. Convinced me to start multiplayer before single player as soon as the game unlocked.
The night of release, after a quick test startup of single player, I played multiplayer instead, choosing to forego continuing the Mass Effect storyline in lieu of deploying to battlefields across the galaxy. (Perhaps for the best; the ending was postponed and the universe kept its luster longer)
There were games from the get go

Because:
- it's small scale and self contained.
- requires little effort in getting started (unlike a modded ES game for example)
- has rich lore behind it
- only takes short amounts of time for a match - can dive in without any commitments or worry you'll be left behind (unlike an mmo for example).
- has some great sound and visual effects (ie cryo explosions) which aren't commonplace in other titles.
The downside is grinding for characters/items, which takes far too long considering it is only half a game, and the second thing is within a match you have to have all your attention focused for that 20 minutes or so - can't jump up and get the phone or answer the door unlike if you were playing singleplayer.

Back when the game first came out, I was of the opinion that MP was the quickest way to raise your GR rating. I was not interested in any other aspect of Multiplayer and had never played any other online game. I convinced a bunch of friends who also played single-player to join me. Except for one, all of them are still around.
After a while, it got to the point that playing regular single-player was just too slow-paced. Even bumping up the difficulty didn't really help. It's actually difficult for me to even go back and play ME 1 and ME2 because I'm like, "No combos...?"
MP pisses me off and makes me rage, but it also makes me laugh and it makes me happy when I set things on fire and immediately explode them with grenades. I like stabbing Phantoms in the belly and chopping heads off with swords. I like watching the Sexbot do backflips and high kicks. And exploding all the things with the Venom is even better than embracing eternity with nekkid Liara in space. But only marginally so.
I find myself wishing I could playing a Krogan in the SP campaign, or wishing that Shep could have new powers like Annihilation Field or Shadow Strike or whatever. I wish that all the variety of MP was available in the SP campaign, because MP makes Mass Effect feel wider and broader than just the story of one hero.

When I did play MP, it was because I actually found a form of online gaming that I enjoyed, and there was little to no elitism or anything in the early stages (the first three months or so).

Its genuinely fun. Especially on gold+ getting the perfect team composition and having amazing gold or plat games with friends is awesome. Plus it takes a degree of skill (coordinating biotic and tech explosions, when to you support moves ect ect)
