There are strong arguments for both. I always give the throne to Alistair because Anora is too deceitful and selfish for my tastes. That might be ideal qualities for a candidate for the throne of Orzammar, but power is pretty de-centralized in Ferelden.

Alistair also treats the elves nicer and is WAAAAAY better at giving pre-battle speeches.

I personally prefer Alistair on the throne, but it depends on how I have been role playing. I have had Alistair stay with the GW's, and let Anora rule alone. Unfortunately, with the "Anora rules alone" choice, there is a bit of 'bugging' out that happens with some Alistair dialogue. However, the end result worked correctly (the flags did get set for importation).

Anora, always. Capable, experienced and savvy. She almost always ends up on the throne in my playthroughs.

Whether Alistair joins her is a bit 50/50. It's better for the country if he does, but better for him if he stays a grey warden, so it kinda depends on how my warden feels about him.

I could never stomach the warden putting themselves on the throne, even "only" as consort ruler. Why on Earth would the Landsmeet allow that?

The Couslands apparetly have a legitimate claim, if something happens to the Therin bloodline/heirs.
Still, I've only done it once out of 17-18 playthroughs.

Because Anora mentions the Cousland being King in the Landsmeet speech, it's only in private she mentions Cousland being only a Consort. For all Ferelden knows the Cousland is King.

Also, DA2 muddles the picture a bit by referring to the Cousland as King on that path. Is it possible Anora died a natural death or something else happened?-IDK.

I usually just have them marry each other. My warden can talk Alistair into lots of crazy things it appears.

The king is mentioned as a warden in DA2 in imports where I also put Alistair on the throne, so the dialogue is a catch-all for both solutions.

As to who I prefer on the throne, it varies wtth my warden.  My female mages and Queen Cousland all put him on the throne.  All my others, male and female, usually let him stay a GW and out of politics, putting Anora on the throne.  I hitched him to her a couple times and while it's good for Ferelden, it sucks for them on a personal level.

Don't know if it sucks on a personal level. Anora is a BEAUTIFUL WOMAN. Allistair needs to learn responsibility and not have to have Duncan or our warden leading him around.

Anora may be beautiful, but she's also cold and unfriendly.  There is more to a relationship than marrying someone who's only quality is 'she's beautiful'.  Certainly Alistair is looking for more than that from life.  He doesn't even want to be king, and now he's been forced to marry a woman he doesn't love all for 'duty'.  To say he just needs to suck it up is denying that he should have a right to choose his own path.  Plus, she is very much her father's daughter, and Alistair hates Loghain (with good reason).

Alistair does learn if he's hardened and Anora actually is pleasantly surprised that he proves good at learning governance.  However, Alistair is very much like Cailan, so Anora has to deal with this (and she will mention that she doesn't like the idea of marrying someone who resembles so strongly her dead husband) if you suggest hitching them for Ferelden, but will go along with it if it means she gets to be queen.

The two of them together do well as rulers because they have qualities that complement each other nicely in the ruling capacity.  But, yea, on a personal level, it sucks for both of them.

I would post more points to support my argument but this is the 'no spoilers' section of the boards.
