There would have been no country if it wasn't for him. Ferelden would have still been a part of the Orlesian Empire.
While his actions are condemnable, I think he did much more that other people ( Zevran, for example ) to deserve a second chance.
That was all in the past. The past is the past and the present is the present. In the Stolen Throne he was in fact the hero including Maric... but in Orgins he became something far worst... a psychotic monster. After what he had done to his country and to his people he deserve no second chance.

Man - what would Ander's "psychotic monster" approach look like at his rate? Hmm... maybe Veil Tears?

Those who forget the past are condemned to repeat it.
Just because something happened in the past, it doesn't mean that it doesn't resonates in the present and future.
As for Loghain, he's the classical case of a tragic hero that has risen above many only to plunge down into the abyss.
I wouldn't go as far as saying he was/is a psychotic monster. The psychotic monster's name rhymes with "How" and he's pretty much dead.
If I had to say how Loghain was in DA:O I'd say he was a lost man, a man that has lost his path, but that still wasn't completly lost.
I've read one of your previous comments regarding him. Loghain never liked fame. He never wanted to be on the spotlight. He let that to Maric. Cailan also loved the fame. Loghain was a pragmatic that did what he believed it was needed to be done to achieve a certain goal and he prefered to keep things to himself.
Why he didn't accept the ideea that it was a Blight ? Denial. He knew that Flemeth told Maric that a Blight was coming , but he also knew that she told him that he will betray him numerous times.
If he accepted that it was indeed a Blight, then Flemeth would have also been right regarding him. He just couldn't accept the ideea that he betrayed his best friend and one of the few persons he actually cared for and treasured.

Nice way to derail a thread by bringing Anders into this discussion

I don't think he 'needs' Anora if hardened, but I still think it's best for Ferelden to have both.eluvianix wrote...

Unhardened Alistair is something I almost never do (maybe in my first I did) if I want to put him on the throne (regardless if alone or with someone else), because he basically became the puppet of Eamon, Anora or the Warden.

I don't trust Anora, not at all. She's way too smart for me, and I could easily see her coming after either Alistair or I after Loghain was killed, hence Alistair ruling alone.hhh89 wrote...

I don't think she would go that far. And Alistair was alive and well in DA2 years after the Blight, so I think they managed to find a compromise.

You know. I might very well change that in the Keep, to have a hardened Alistair and Anora ruling, but I will wait until I can get more info first. But we will definitely see them in DAI. Considering some parts of the game are in Ferelden, we might be able to visit Denerim.

Inquisitor: "C'mon Al, one more to go!"
Alistair: "He didn't care."
Inquisitor: "Wut?"
Alistair: "That bastard - the "Hero" of Ferelden. He didn't care about me."
Inquisitor: Riiiiight. So, we're "not" going to the last Pub?
Alistair: "He DIDN'T CARE!"
Inquistir: Oookay, tell you what winner. You sit here in a puddle of your own puke. I'll hit the last pub.
Warden: Where's Alistair?
Inquisitor: Unconscious in the ally behind the pub being mugged by three dwarves in drag.
Warden: CLASSIC!
*water toast as I'm a shameless teetotaller*
Warden: So, you were drinking water the whole time?
Inquisitor: Yep.
Warden: Man, that's cold.

Anora gives you her support, which is what ultimately tips the scales. Without her the Warden is nothing.
Um wrong. I had the entire Landsmeet on my side then Anora stepped out and supported her father against me (because I didn't talk to her). Everyone still voted in my favor. Anora is nothing more than the icing on the cake if you know what to do and say to sway everyone. No one there really cares what she thinks.
@eluvianix, Hardened Alistair is mature and hot. I love making him duel Loghain and he chops his head off and becomes King on his own.
